I'm sorry but those added TF2 weapons were nothing but a balance nightmare and a silly gimmick for the rest of the items really.. NS has kept fairly active servers for years on a decent game.. not silly aesthetic gimmicks.. Really though they up the players numbers for a few weeks then it drops back again when the new feel is over, it isn't that helpful to the game in the long run. Just my say on the prospect of copying TF2's little additions.

Are you forgetting that aliens have a flashlight that illuminates everything living, or the "Scent of Fear" perk that tells you exactly where you are. (if they do have that in NS2) and the fact that the normal model has some sort of lights on each side of the helmet anyway, and as someone said it might just be a texture and not light up.
I myself like the look of them and will enjoy them on my head.
I just really hope the modding community take hold of this [game] and mod it up like they are with Starcraft 2. Though, vanilla is gonna be awesome.
And, though it may happen, I hope they (modders) don't bring out a combat mod yet, let the masses get their teeth into the NS2 gameplay first. Then mod the game to be more like NS1 gameplay mechanics. Then, go nuts.
I hope alpha has fixed the bugs I am still having with pre-alpha - mainly with performance, but also with joining a game. I tried joining a game for the first time today and the most I get is the screen fading to black, a "attempting to connect..." message in the top-left corner, then that message goes away and the screen goes black. No indication, sound or otherwise, that anything is happening - but I can click on the X and NS2 closes with no problem.
Update: I went full screen with the game and then tried to connect. It looked like it connected and the game seemed to be running, but the moment I tried to move, the screen locked up and I had to End Task. When I create a game, it is sluggish as best, and locks up at worst.

You know, as said before by many others... Linux has a low populous in terms of gaming, you guys are actually doing this to yourself, when hiding behind Linux. Sure Linux is a great platform, but as long as this populous is very low. It will only cost money to make games possible on the platform. Especially for a small company like UWE.
Just get a Windows license, it won't break the bank. And then you can have all the games you want... While for your other stuff ya can boot Linux. Or heck emulate Windows in Wine or something...
Great games like this and others (bigger mega gaming devs) might or might not happen on Linux, and if even the big guys don't do it that often how can you expect UWE to do this on short notice after v1.0?
In short, stop doing this to yourself, while blaming others :P
All of the above should be taken with a few ounces of sarcasm as always (not sure if people get that sometimes and then they get mad, which I want to prevent... :P) Ah well...
I haven't read all 20 pages of comments so perhaps this has been suggested... but for those of you Linux users who are dying for a Linux version of NS2.... Before Steam went Mac, I used to use CrossOver Games and it connected flawlessly (albeit with a few GUI quirks) to Steam and NS1. Here's the link. -shrugs- It has a free trial but the cost is worth it and it's a one-time fee:
I was being completly bored in front of my screen at 3am here in france, when i remembered there was a game i was really waiting for. I mean, really, even more than any other game.
So i went and checked the NS2 website, wich i haven't done for quite some time now, only to discover the alpha's going out tommorow ! And it only cost me 40 dollars to get in. I mean, how many hours have i spent playing NS1 ? 40 dollars is not even enought to thank you for all the fun i had with NS1.
I'm glad i made it on time and could buy the special edition ^^

I'm not quite sure what you're saying there.
I'd like to support NS2, but it's just not worth me paying a large amount to support it when it's not even going to run on my computer.
I already have many windows licences, it's not that I don't have windows, it's that I don't want to use windows. Anybody who has experience with linux will know that Wine, while technically impressive, is largely inferior to a native solution.
Bigger mega gaming devs are in a completely different league to independents, it's of much greater benefit for indies to support other platforms.
I'd like to reiterate that I'm not blaming others, I'm basically saying I want to pay money for a linux version. I'd happily spend money on a NS2 Linux Special Edition pre-order. But if I pre-order now, and then they don't port, I'm out of pocket and out of game.
