Huge NS fan

<div class="IPBDescription">Need advice please</div>Hey everyone,

I use to play Natural Selection back in pre-source days. I fell in love with the game and I still do love it.

Over the past few months I have been checking on NS2's progress. I held off for a bit to buy the game due to the performance issues that were coming up constantly for current users.

However these most current builds seem to be pretty good. Seems like most people now can sit at a good frame rate and enjoy the game.

Here's my issue, my PC is 7 years old and I really do not have the money to upgrade it at all. I was wondering what everyone thought about what kind of FPS I will experience and is it even worth it for me to purchase this game while it's in Beta and me using my old PC.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Duel Core Processor 4200+ 2.2ghz
3 GB RAM
Geforce 9500 GT 512 MB.

I honestly would like to just be able to play the game in my native resolution of 1600x1050 (wide). And receive a steady enough FPS to actually enjoy the game and be able to compete.

Thanks in advance everyone. I played tons of NS back in the day. Really would like to play again.

Honestly, you'll probably get about 10-35fps. Natural Selection 2 right now is wayyy more cpu intensive than gpu, and considering your processor is old it won't be able to handle the game very well. So yeah like i said, you'll probably get 10-35fps, depending on if there's a lot of action or not, that's my best guess.

Well crap...that's pretty much unplayable. I imagine 30-40 fps would be playable.

If anyone here runs constantly on 20-40 fps please post your experience.

EDIT: I do expect to tweak the game a little bit (ex. remove shadows through console command).

Tweaking would only improve by 10% at best, I cannot recommend this game for this rig.

It may work on own server where there is less computing but multiplayer is out of the question.

yeah like the others said, your rid is pretty much to old for the game.
If you still want to play, the cheapest way is prob. to buy a new motherboard and CPU.

    you could get a fairly cheap CPU like a Athlon II X3 450 (socket: AM3) for around 45 €/$ and a mobo for about 50-80 €/$ (AM3 or AM3+)
For that price you would be able to get an AM3+ motherboard from amd which would allow you to upgrade later on to a AM#+ or even maybe by then an AM4 CPU if needed.

And then stick with the rest of your hardware (gpu, ram, psu,...) and slowly upgrade them one by one.

Alternatively you could try to to find out if you can update your motherboards BIOS to support AM3 CPU's, then you would only need a new CPU, although it wouldn't be able to run at max potential.

But other then that i dont think you can do much, even with a good system the game still has its drops in which it just becomes a lag fest for a bit.

I'm afraid unless you have something like an i5 or i7 CPU, with a Mid to High end GFX card you'll be getting 10-30 fps at most with your current system.

Performance of NS2 will improve as time goes on, so either try it and see or hang on a bit longer until performance improves. But your PC is getting old for a lot of the latest games, so it might be worth saving up for a new system.

Sorry Souless but I'm going to have to agree with everyone else here as well. The game has made some serious performance improvements but overall it is still ridiculously poor and nowhere near where it needs to be. I have an i7 and a GTX 580 and tend to get around 30 - 50 fps.

It's unfortunate that the game is this way but I guess your computer may be a bit old...
  • WilsonWilson Join Date: 2010-07-26 Member: 72867Members
Yeah, I agree with the others. Hold off buying it for now as you won't be able to play it at a decent frame rate. I have an i5 750 and a 4870 and get anywhere between 10-50fps.

Got to agree with everyone above, that system won't handle NS2 very well right now. I have a laptop with similar (but slightly poorer specs: Core Duo 2GHz, Mobility HD4500, 4GB) specs of your system and it ranges between 5-15 fps even with performance tweaking. I've never seen it go above 25 fps. While I can run the game on the laptop, it frequently drops into slideshow territory and I can't hit anything. I'd expect the same for your system, though, NS2 will eventually get there performance-wise.

Alright. Well thank you everyone for your posts.

I guess I will have to wait.

Well even if you do plan on buying it in the future, there's no harm in getting it now, yeah maybe you won't be able to play it very well, but atleast you'd be able to go ingame and check out the updates and such and see it progress through the builds.

    Intel C2D E6420 @ 2.4Ghz | 2Gb RAM @ 900mhz | HD4850 512Mb | Running on 720p, medium (3.5year old rig? I forget :P)

I'm getting in between 20 and 35 with some peeks of 45 and some dips of 15. It's very dependant on combat and amount of things happening onscreen at once.

That and those damn Lerk spikes are probably shooting straight into my GPU due to FPS dips!

I have a 3800+ and run the game around 5 - 35 fps . I consider it playable, but it can get bad.

I have an overclocked i5-750 @ 3.8GHz and an ATI Radeon HD 4890. My fps ranges from 60 all the way down to 10 settling around the 30-45 range "most" of the time. Unless you have a beast of a computer that can brute force it's way through code inefficiencies, you're DEFINITELY going to experience lag regardless of the computer you have. That's NS2.

Note: I always like to mention that NS2HD sold his soul to the devil for a computer able to run NS2 smoothly. The only way such a beast could exist.

Incorrect, runs fine for me on a Phenom II 720(gtx 260 card) getting around 40-55 fps average on medium. Though when there's sg farms it does tend to drop down to around 20-30.

Just want to make a quick note, if you get 30fps that's absolutly perfect, because your eyes can't see more then 30 fps :)

I can tell a huge difference up to 60-65 personally. If I ever run above the 70-80 range I can no longer see an improvement. :)

I think he was joking, or making a reference to the server max tickrate. Do people still believe that 30 is the maximum? It's not that hard to prove yourself.

Yea I believe you can actually see up to 60fps, however 30+ is the least recommended for smooth gameplay.

    Hey Souless,

I appreciate that you're a big NS fan and careful with your money. The game isn't done nor optimized yet, but we'd love to have you giving feedback now.

So I sent you a free copy of the NS2. Welcome!

I guess my PC isn't old enough, you guys obviously want steam powered (hehe) machines to test on and get feedback from those :P

I think you're a big competitor for the title Mr. Niceguy. I'm however not so sure you can beat Jacky Chan in a battle for this title though.

    Don't have high expectations...

Changing graphics settings from high - low won't make much difference btw when you're looking for ways to improve performance. If you want performance increases lower the resolution. That works better.
