    Logical reason:
    It's a game.

    Game Reason:
    Maybe the guys at TSA where too much in a rush to make it smaller, but I think if it's smaller, it would be harder to transport equipment. Such as a HA/HMG/GL troop. So to prevent possible phase gate overloads, they gave it a bigger size.

    That good for now? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    according to the manual, spawn portals are 1-way recievers for the dropships that dock with the station for a few seconds just to unload troops.

    phase gates are self-contained 2-way teleporters <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    It does make sense. It's the difference between two-way radios and between a big radio sending antenna and a small radio set.

    Two-way radios = Phasegates
    Tiny reciever radio = Spawn portal
    Big Antenna for KMNE (K Marine) = Dropship

    Does it make a bit more sense now? The only reason spawn portals are smaller is because they are one way, and most of the work is done by the powerful dropship generators (which you never see), and it only sends the person a few feet.

    It matters not a whit in the game, but It's not that hard to justify.

    Actually "Transporter" technology isn't that new... they've had it for awhile... The TSA just made personal transporters avalible in the last little bit of time >.>

    according to the story..

    yes, this should be explained with something better than "oh, it's just a game" Maybe someone should come up with a _logical_ explanation rather than "gameplay > realism"

    You people baffle me. This is

    a) a game
    b) science fiction
    c) NOT REAL LIFE
    d) did I mention it's a game?

    Personally, I think Terr's response is a perfectly acceptable "realistic" (as much as you're going to get) answer. Imagine this: the big, ungainly, lighting-up part of the phase gate is the "collect and send" part. The "receive and recompose" part of the phase is, by comparison, much smaller and not at all flashy. So every phase gate has two parts: the flashing outgoing part, and the simple incoming part (which you don't really see since the flashing outgoing part lights everything up).

    Now apply that rationale to an infantry portal. As Terr said, they're one-way --- RECEIVING ONLY. The flashy, ungainly, lighting-up part is the sending part, which is up in orbit in the TSA ship. The IP, therefore, is small, sleek, and unimpressive - because all it does is receive.

    That said, I could totally see having IPs give off their own light. But if Flay would rather they didn't, I have no issue with that.
