Ingame Music

(sorry if i missed any topic related to this, searching did not turn up anything for me)
well, the menu-theme is awesome. but ingame, there is nothing (for me at least, is this a bug or is there just no ingame music?)
so the only option is to listen to other music i have, but i'd really prefer some ingame music as that'd greatly influence the atmosphere.
is there anything planned?

Ns1 had it so it's pretty much a given, I'd say

If I remember correctly, ns1 some random ambient music or part of the main theme play during the beginning of a round.

Charlie and i had a chat about this recently, and looks like there wont be much in the way of music during gameplay.

there will be menu, and loading music, and currently 1 of the unreleased maps has music that plays in one of the rooms (a bar/nighclub)

ive used some of that round start ambient music from ns1 to make background sounds that can be used in maps so those will be in a few rooms in the next patch (summit alien start for example)

the original plan was to have musical 'stingers' like in left for dead when the infected get a tank and u hear his theme song. but we have decided against this, for a few reasons, one being that already the amount of sounds playing in the game has reached a saturation point where adding more sounds just makes things noisier and masks important sounds.

not sure about round start music, maybe. have to try it and go from there,

While it pains me to even suggest implementing something the same way its done in call of duty; the way Call of Duty presents the beginning of an online match, specifically team deathmatch was so satisfying when i saw it for the first time in Call of Duty 4. They sort of screwed it up in Modern warfare 3 with the black-white taking too long to fade back into color, and the themes of the factions not being as cool as the ones in Modern warfare 2/Black ops, but the same thing, if pulled off right, would be so cool in Natural Selection 2.

You could even go as far as to make waiting period before the game start have a more blue tinted hue if you're on the marine side or orange if you're on the alien side, followed by the current game-start dialogue cues currently used.

And something along the lines of Battlefield 3's very subtle musical cue right before a match ends could also fit, with some fast-paced but quiet tune slowly pick up until they reach either the current victory/loss themes, or possibly some more climatic themes that could be added later on.

While we are discussing music, are there going to be new music tracks to replace the old ones? the victory/defeat theme from natural selection 1 being here for instance?

How about some music in the ready room then?

Implement a HLSS for NS2 and your ears will never rest again.

how about a calm-before-the-storm theme which is replaced by the regular theme as soon as the first battle takes place? (e.g. when the first player dies, or the first player is hit by an enemy) the first could be calm but frightening, the second faster but still rather stuble (because you got a point, it should not distract the players). these themese could fade out for locations where ambient music is playing.

that sounds reasonable. i wonder if its possible to keep the loading-screen music (without interrupting it) until you start your first match?

either way, i trust you guys to do a good job with this.

i figure this is an ingame music player? it's no big deal to listen to music while the game is playing (you can even use global hotkeys to skip through the tracks in winamp or to adjust the volume) but i don't have that much music which fits as nicely as it should. sure, it works, but i think well-themed ingame music and sounds have much more influence on the atmosphere than everything else combined.

It's an application used to tunnel music\sound to the ingame voice-chat, which was subsequently used by many to make your ears bleed.

oh i see. i remember this from ns1 and yea, that's usually quite annoying. it ruins the atmosphere and i remember the sound-quality being quite miserable. granted, its funny to suddenly hear the tetris theme etc., but that gets old really fast and it's a pain when overlapping with your own music.

I quite like an entire variety of music, but it helps having a 'Launch Media Centre' button, one press of that and Media Monkey loads up and off I go! :)

That was a nice touch Dice did with that, could work well in ns2 with the last tech point % for a nice dramatic ending.
