Getting 20-40 fps on a 18 player server on my laptop, specs below. All low settings (everything off except multicore rendering and texture streaming), 800x600 res in windowed mode.

I got about a 5fps bump in my minimum, average, and max FPS. However, that's not the whole story. Overall, the FPS is much more <i>consistent</i>, which is a bigger subjective improvement than better raw FPS numbers.
The regular walking around looking at things FPS is higher, however when combat starts and I have to shoot something my FPS tanks quite a bit. I fresh installed today (have not played in a few months) and my first time in the game everything was super choppy. I rebooted my PC and everything seemed much smoother, but the in game combat lag still is very frustrating and is one of three things that prevent me from keeping NS2 installed. I'll try again at release.

Guys, if you are having these kinds of issues, please do the following:
open console after a round has started
type p_logall
This will save a performance log in your %appdata%\Natural Selection 2 Folder.
Please zip that up and email it to me obraxis[at]digi-port.net
THIS is how we got performance up in this patch, if everyone who has poor perf does this we can really help get it even higher.

Why don't you try servers with a better ping then?
I used to play on Low/Medium settings with the menumod running loads of scripts to disable all the graphical effects, I'd get choppy gameplay. Now I've removed the scripts, play everything on High and enabled anti aliasing and use all the graphical effects, almost smooth as effing silk. Amazing improvement, I've never seen NS2 look so good on my machine! :D

I assume the latency would be included in the log and they can figure out how to deal with high ping logs. More information can't hurt.
It seems to be a lot smoother in the beginning. Although I only get like 40 fps when there's just me looking facing a wall and during normal play it drops to ~25. I get a lot more crashes than I used to in 216 though. I played a 5v6 game, 4 marines were assaulting the hive (1 nade launcher and 3 flames) and fps dropped from 15 to like 2 and the game crashed. Sent my log . hope it helps:)
Optimization in this patch did nothing for me tbh ..... still struggling with below 50 fps + fps aren´t stable. It´s playable...but fun is something else :D esp. with a marine. I mean ... BF3 runs smooth compared to this :D .....
gonna do this "p_logall" thing.
FYI:
CPU: 2.2 i7 Ram: 4gb ddr3 ( capped to 3.5 due to 32bit win .... but NS2 does need about 1.5 anway...) GPU: GTX 485m

Bf3 if not a comparison to this engine. Major differences. They do a lot of things that make it a smoother game at the cost of mod-ability and security against hacking. Not to mention its a triple A title that was worked on by hundreds.
The devs are working like mad to get this game optimized, though. Every patch is getting better.
Running on: LOW/MEDIUM with AA and Multicore rendering on, 1280x720 and also tried it on 1680x1050, which was a bit lower on FPS though.
The game is very much playable right up to about 6 players fighting in one room/main base. Once I see more, it goes down to unplayable FPS. On my older HD4850 512Mb it is unplayable as soon as I see a player or 2.
217 is quite interesting as running my C2D none-overclocked (3.4Ghz -> stock 2.13Ghz) and even being able to do anything was quite impossible. I was able to actually hit things now and get a nicer score even :P
26:7 aliens, 23:12 marines | which used to be ~10-20:20-30 on both teams, I can't tell you how good it feels to finally be able to kill the things I point at :D
Sure it still isn't smooth but the FPS is a lot more stable and stable at the higher end mostly (~30FPS), which gives me hope for the other people that have big issues still. Mind you, I am about 500Mhz below the minimum requirements on stockspeeds. But that extra 512Mb Vram did the trick to get rid of the usual hitching during combat. Still need to load everything into mem first though, so that hitching is still an issue initially!
I get about 5 frames or so more this update. Still the same framerate when around infestation though. Infestation is the biggest loss of fps and around a hive late-game it's always been 9-15fps for me. I know they want to change it, they really should do so soon as I imagine the final form of infestation will have to go through many code iterations and the framerate isn't going to get any better if they don't change it.

Cuz South Africa. Think Australia, except without the local playerbase.
Ping or not, I think my performance has increased massively. I don't have concrete evidence for this yet, but damn I'm killing a lot of skulks now. My KPD is usually a good indicator.
I'm running AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.01 GHz 4GB ram (only 3 GB usable cuz of 32 win 7 though, should be enough for NS2..) ATI Radeon HD 4850 1024MB GDDR3
I have everything on low, 1680 x 1050 resolution.
I never get more than 30 fps, if there is bigger battle like an onos, fade or 2 exo suits it's completely unplayable. like 1 fps and it usually crashes:(
It is playable and lots of fun in the early stages of the game though

I run more or less the same config as you do... AMD X6 1055T @ 2.8ghz (maby a little higher IPC than your X4 but lower clockrate which is the deciding factor on ns2 performance at the moment) 8gb ram on win 7 x64 (not doing much for performance as far as i know) Radeon4850 with 512mb ram (which should be slower than yours)
running medium, no atmospherics 1367x768 res. this patch i am getting 75 fps in ready room, 45-50 early expansion game, 25ish during 1v1 battles and 10-15 in the really crazy explosion filled last stands... no crashes so far..

Yeah...ofc...im just afraid this game won´t get the attention it deserves, just cuz of its performance. A competitive game should run well.... look at how many people complain about CS:GO having a bad performance....i run it at 200 fps.
Just the game i played 10 minutes ago ..... about 40-50 fps as a marine..i get attacked and aaall the way down to 20 fps ....thats not viable, smooth mouse-movement isn´t possible like that.
That´s only NS2 ...what if people wanna stream? Like everyone nowadays? Need a 2k PC? Sorry.....thats not viable....
Don´t get me wrong: i like this game A LOT. Playing it every day... but the performance ..... is a big issue.... dunno HOW MUCH future optimization will give us, but it´ll better be a bit more....
