I have serious concerns about the enjoyment of new Kharaa players.
I foresee a lot of scrambled (Alien) eggs as they try to evolve to a Fade or Onos (chuckle). "Why is everyone else an Onos or Fade and I'm always REIN?!"
New Marine players probably will find the game enjoyable, as their game play is similar to most other FPS games, and dying isn't as punishing as a Kharaa.
BTW One of the main reasons I enjoy Tribes:Ascend is I can only check my own death count at the end of the game. ^^
Dividing the community on day one is really the worst outcome for this game. What we need is to stick together, since NS2 will fly under the 'mainstream' radar.
Given that there are excellent methods for communicating in-game, there is really no excuse for more experienced players to not help the newbies out when needed. Heck, I've only put in some 100+ hours, and I got good help and enjoyment from people using the in-game chat. The idea of holding the hands of new players is terrible, because they won't actually become better at the game with constant bouts with people roughly their skill level. The only way to improve is challenging yourself, i.e. going toe-to-toe with the veterans.
We as a community (Veterans and newbies alike) have a responsibility to make this game enjoyable for all who try it out, and I really hope that this becomes sort of a hit game. The only way for that to happen is to have a welcoming community, seeing as we are relatively small compared to the giants in the genre (CoD, BF3). Now, before you bash my skull in for comparing these games with NS2, they ARE fps:es with a HUGE player base.
Perhaps remove the green "rookie"-text from people who play the beta, and give it to the ones who start playing on or after release day, and make it stay green for at least 10+ hours (removable in settings as it is now, ofc), so that the experienced players, the ones who've played since the beta or even way before that can easily tell who's new and who's not.
Either that, or some sort of training/tutorial mode to show new players the general ropes, so that they at least get a feel for the game before commiting.
To all those chewing out their team mates in game for being less than your petty vision of a good player, remember this: You too were once the "noob". Just remember that.
We have 'rookie friendly' servers, don't we? I played on one yesterday and I liked it. Nobody btched around, we helped the noob commmander instead of voting him out, and so on. I think this would have been perfect in NS1 for me when I started it. It took some time to understand everything back then. Hell, after half a year I found out what USE THE HIVE means, beacuse the Vets wouldn't care for noobs. Then again, I learned it anyways.
So, no to dividing the community, yes to vets helping out. I'll never shout at a noob, I'll help them. I think that's enough. I already heard people say 'NS2 has a great community'. How can it get better for noobs?

One tip they should add is: "if you don't know how to command, just don't get into the Hive/CC". When i'm playing i want to have fun and if your commander didn't even drop a cyst after 5 minutes i'm just leaving the server and i lost all the enjoyment i had to play ns2 for the evening... I just want to make sure that both Beta players and newcomers will enjoy as much as possible the game. This post was made to have a solution because it won't be 2 days before launch that we would need to talk about it...
I'm glad that people answered to this post even i seems to be a "elitist" and a "divider". Sure i will help nice newbies and bash rude noobs. Depends on them! I'm sure you know that with the launch every type of players will be on the servers, admins should be very aware and active during a week or 2. Once again, i don't want to divide anybody, i want everybody to enjoy the games they play.
Yes i once was a noob on NS1 but i had respect for the people i played with and i NEVER went in the cc to discover the game without their agreement. Sure they helped me, but i asked them things, i listened to them. I will ALWAYS help somebody who ask a question as commander even if it's his first time commanding. BUT if he says nothing and doesn't listen to the few experienced people and spoil my game, i will rage and leave the server. Thats legit no?
