<div class="IPBDescription">NS dedicated server fund</div>Well, I am sure you were all drawn in by my stunning, cunning, original acronym! <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo--> Anyways, most of the info can be seen here: <a href="http://www.kreation.org/~comprox/donations.html" target="_blank">http://www.kreation.org/~comprox/donations.html</a> . Now, I don't feel great "begging for money", but people in IRC seemed quite positive to the idea, so I am giving it a try. Thanks to anyone who can help! And don't worry, I have started off the pot with a cool $500 US!

I would love to help out if I can.  I'm thinking about sending some money, for sure, but I'd need to check out my budget. <!--emo&???--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo--> And I'm just a bit too lazy to do that right now.  I certainly wouldn't want to see this supposedly quite good deal fall through for lack of funding.

I have a question, though:  If you raise more than $3300, would you be able to get more servers, or no?

Interfector, you fill out the form on the page (I will make this more obvious) and once it is filled out, I will send you back contact information. If you want to check the pings to the servers, head over to <a href="http://www.onlinegaminghost.com" target="_blank">http://www.onlinegaminghost.com</a> and scroll down to the java applet, there you can see your pings.

Comp, the form on the page is kind of... er, not working for me because of my stupid e-mail for my broadband.  Is it ok if i just talk to you about it in IRC? <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

Whoah whoah guys.  I don't want you spending big bucks for servers, ESPECIALLY when I can't commit to getting the training stuff in any time soon.  I _really_ appreciate you guys wanting to do this but there are a lot better ways to spend $3300.  We should have hundreds of free community-run servers within a couple months of the release of NS.  Some of these will be reliable enough to accomodate training mode, if and when it arrives.

If you REALLY want to continue the donations, let's contribute the money to a humane society (or place organization where each dollar means something big for a human or animal).  We could make into a press release, to combat all the "games are bad for people" press we're always getting.

Besides, if this is to work properly, it will have to last a lot longer then a year, and it would have to scale with the number of players.  I think 5 servers for a year would work in the very beginning, but I think we would quickly need more (I hope at least).

Lastly, I want to be able to control who is a trainer and who isn't.  I'm want trainers to have pleasant teacher demeanors, social skills and game skills, not just people that donated.

Although, generous donations of money to the Humane Society For Poor NS Artists, otherwise known as the the Cory Strader fund, are always appreciated  <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

Flay, comp put up this thing just because lots of us really would like to donate, were all for NS, we want this mod to succeed well either way! Even if you get servers and such, it means alot to most people that they actually helped the mod on it's way to glory!  I know it seems like alot of money, but its sprung out between many people, we don't all have to give hundreds!  We are doing this for you! <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

Yeah everyone on IRC was very very receptive of the idea.  While it is ultimately up to Comprox where the money goes, I could see something like Flayra's idea working too, bbut it all depends on how we are for servers at release.  Wouldn't it be great to have 5, super-fast, 32-man servers open for EVERYONE's playing pleasure, right at release?  I personnally think it would give the mod a great jump-start. Some mods don't take off because they don't have any continuous servers for the average joe with a 56k to play in.  If we make sure that there are at least 5 open while NS is in its infancy, we stand a much better chance of clearing the initial hurdle of release when the mod is still new to the community.  A year should be plenty time to help draw people to NS, and after that they probably won't be needed.

Flay, this would NOT be just training servers, thes ewould be servers for people to play on. I was saying I would likely dedicate 1 or 2 to training at the beggining and see how it goes, but the rest would be for public use. $3300 is just a goal, if I only acieve 3 servers, there may only be one for training and 2 public. 5 is just a number I was shooting for, and after some mandatory payments that I wasn't expecting, I could see there was no way I could (by myself) afford more than 2 servers. So, after someone mentioned donations, and me quietly asking if people would consider it rude asking for money, I decided to give it a shot and see what we could come up with. No one has donated more than $50, so Im sure they can all still send equal amounts off to their local charirty *hint hint* <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Or, how about, instead of spending money, you take up the offers of people that already own dedicated servers.

What sorta connection would you have to have in order to host a 16 player NS server?

I have ADSL and would gladly host a server. As long as the data transfer (Up and Down) didn't exceed about 700 meg a month as I have a 3 gig transfer cap.

700 is just a planning number btw.

    Depends on a few things.

How many people play on your server, how often, and how well NS's netcode is written.

For example, Counter-Strike averages 3k/s (up + down) for each player.

On a 16 player server, that is full half the day (12 hours) you would have:

    (3 * 60 * 60 * 12) / 1024 = 126.5 megs a day

Servers eat up bandwidth like a mofo.

Fool, that's hardly a useful, constructive post.  To quote Will Smith, "Don't *start* none, won't *be* none."  This also isn't the topic, or even the forum, for that post.

What my post meant was I could EASILY spend my money on crap (Food, Clothing, Video games, Etc.) instead of a charity, anyway. I wouldn't be criticized for that. Instead, I prefer to donate it to a needy cause. The NS Server cause.
  • TzarconTzarcon Join Date: 2002-02-28 Member: 259Members
As some of you know, I am only 12, 13 soon, and currently the only job I have consists of delivering newspapers once a week, the pay being about 60 bucks a month, which Is money I need for what Jedisar calls "crap"

As for the training, I'm not too sure about this, but does it really need to be online? I am leader of the IFB NS Clan, so I could whip up some powerful offline training that takes up a week of the players time before he's done with it <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

I think that online training could still be used for further aqaintance with the game, but an extremely large and well made offline training would be better

If the real NS is going to be anything like the playtests, training will be a <u>necessity</u>.
  • SentrySteveSentrySteve .txt Join Date: 2002-03-09 Member: 290Members, Constellation
I am just going to take what Mole said a little farther.  Maybe it was a day ago in mIRC that I brought this up.  Here is pretty much what I said:

"Anyone notice that when a game forces people to use teamwork it is just annoying and frustating.  Take a look @ DOD, how many times have you waited at a multiple-man cap point and had your team just walk by.  How many times have you screamed for ammo, as a machine gunner, but got none.  The majorty of people do not use teamwork, nor do they want to.  They are out for personal score and that is all they care about.  I know teamwork makes clan matches much more fun but I think most of the time when a game/mod froces teamwork it turns out to be a disaster."

Then we sorta had a debate over it -- many were saying that this problem would be changed by the training servers.  So if you want to avoid lots of headachs while playing I belive training servers are a must for at least 8 - 12 months after the release of NS.  If NS dosent have them you know what will happen, Advil's stock will skyrocket <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
