One thing I love about Subnautica is precisely the difficulty of orientation than when a person lies on the mainland.
The only point of reference that you have in the game is the crashed spaceship.
In case you need to find again some previously visited places, you can use a lighthouse.
And to find new places you can already find in the game some radar signals to follow to find special places.
I think is more than enough! But this is just my idea.

Try glass tubes or base windows above surface or in the dark deep as lighthouses. Works pretty well.
And once you spent hundreds of game hours, your brain will inherit the map ... or the map will inerit your brain ... don't know anymore
