The map will always have a void, no matter how far you expand, there will always be a border.
Except that if there was a border we wouldn't have this issue. A border would let keep us from going into the void.
The real problem with it is for new players who don't realize just how small the map really is and end up jumping their PRAWN suit off into it.
With Subnautica that border would probably have to be an invisible wall of some sort, since it'd look strange to have a huge unclimbable landmass encompassing the entire ocean.
That'd suuuuuck to have happen in the exosuit! I almost did that myself at one point on accident, strayed too close and slipped.
Or there could just be a current that surrounds the map, and if you go too far out and get caught in it you lose control and the only way out is back to the world. I've always thought that a giant monster in the deep would be cool, but I don't know how fun it'd be for new players who think that there's something in the deep, and they head down in a Cyclops that took them hours to build only to have it be destroyed. It could work it a screen popped up on the sub's screen that told you "Gigantic heat signature detected just two hundred meters below. Ascend now or face certain death."

strangely enough: the world area exists in a bowl, with giant mountains surrounding the level in broken terrain. after that its a straight shot to no return.

You know... With the Carar-virus storyline being fleshed out, they could put a world border around the map and call it a "Quarantine Field". Beyond that, they could install some false terrain, kinda like fake chunks in Minecraft.
It's not as fun (or as scary) as Pat's Single Cell Landscape (which I personally vote for), but I'd hazard it's easier to implement.

How about something more practical for the edges of the map? I don't know if it would be worthwhile to implement, but they could add some type of storm system when players approach the edge. Like on the ocean surface the sky would darken and the waves get choppier, as you continue further the seas get rough and your vehicle starts taking damage. Underwater it could be slipstream currents and whirlpools that could pull you down below crush limits. It could be explained as being caused by the Precursors trying to limit your movements; after all they if they have a massive cannon that can decimate starships, they could manipulate the weather to try and destroy you...
On second thought, how come this world doesn't have any weather? What with it being mostly water, it should be more prone to storms and hurricanes. At any rate, I think random rainy weather and storms would really add to the atmosphere of the game, especially if you're relaxing quietly in your base.
The logs left behind on the floater island by the Degasi survivors mention torrential rain and storms, so they probably plan to implement weather at some point (at least I hope they do).
1) Wow there is a lot of debate going into a inconsequential part of the game.
2) You could have the entire map on one floating island and have it that the water is so deep that you could never reach the bottom of the map or the island, just going down the side is too deep. This would mean that you just die because of the pressure.
3) You might have to excep that it is just part of the game and will just be there.
OK so I have this cool idea, so you know the huge Skelton in the lost river, it has 3 eyes and it is huge, and players would always be scared to meet it. So what if when you went into the void, it would start playing ominous music, and then since it very dark in the void, it would start a cinematic you would just see the bright greenish yellow eyes of the huge creature blink open one by one, your screen would go dark and you would just hear sounds of the hung shark crushing your sub, and you would go the last save, because it would be annoying af to lose your cyclops. (like what they did in the trailer after you see the sea emperor). This would be very easy to make for the devs because all they have to animate would be the opening of the eyes, and it would scare the player into not coming back. It would also keep the player thinking about how insignificant he and his sub are to the world of subNautica.
please comment on what you think of this idea and agree so the devs can see it!!
Okay just hear me out, because this is probably stupid...
So lets say we cant go past the border while the storyline is active, for whatever reason. At the end of the game, we get a choice to leave in the rocket, or search for more survivors, with the gigantic submarine from that one thread. If we choose to stay, the rest of the world is randomly generated terrain, and you just get to explore. With more precoursor bases and gigantic guns. This is already getting ridiculous, but it'd be cool.
I personally like Capshaw's idea. While I absolutely love the idea of the Single Cell Landscape, I also want a bit more to the world. Perhaps have an overall larger world filled in with procedural generation, and then at the eventual border of that, maybe even as a biome within the world as well, you can have the Single Cell Landscape.
@DagothUr But think about this how funny would it be if they did they would learn real quick not to go that far again and add some horror or atmosphere to the game that a giant monster is right outside of the border

To the contrary- this sounds AWESOME! Don't know how feasible this is, but it's my new favorite idea for a world border.
how about new biomes; i dont know this c game engine but i have played my fair share of mods in fall out and other games. its a community thing and this one isn't a bunch of nulls. so i dont see what would make a player generated mod un-do-able.
i am not a tech and while i am trying to learn a bit of modding in fallout 4 for a project of my own its not my comfort zone. some few of you seem to have this sort of bug. would be fun to see what folks who actually like the seas could dream up.

Didn't they remove that though?

That's generally what they do to expand the map.
The current plan it to put Sea Dragons over the Void to tell you to turn the hell around.
Though I like the idea of a Precursor Quarantine Field
