A 'New Cyclops' Story

Loving the stressful nature of survival games and hard games in general, I play for those ‘Oh Sh******, IM GONNA DIE!’ moments. These situations become even more immersive and heart pounding when playing in VR! (I play with HTC Vive) And I love the new cyclops update for its contribution to this experience. Read on.

In my Survival Mode game (I will definately go Hardcore, when the game is rid of fatal bugs), I have been gathering ressources for a new main base for quite some hours (400 titanium, 150 glass etc.. It’s a story for another thread, but I have drawings, spreadsheets and screenshots).

Wondering all the while where to put my new base, I decided searching the Lost River in my Seamoth for the prettiest place, and finally fell in love with the cavern with the Cove Tree and 10+ Ghost Rays cirvling it. Making a ‘Base Line’ of Beacons though the Deep Grand Reef and Lost river with my Seamoth, I went back for my Cyclops filled with 20 full lockers of Gold, Tools, Food, Nuclear rods, Magnetite, pre-fabricated kits and what not. Being used to the invulnerable Cyclops, as of before the update, I thought that I could easily squeeze it through the Deep Grand Reef caves. Boy was I wrong.

A few hundred meters after entering the caves, I encounter the abandoned seabase along my Beacon breadcrumbs trail, getting visuals on quite a few crab squids. Them roaming aimlessly around, I wasn’t scared. However, 50 meters laters I get stuck on some stalactites with the tail of my cyclops, and the squids decide that now is their time to shine. Suddenly, I’m surrounded. EMP’s flying everywhere, perma-stunning the cyclops, damage reports coming at me like a waterfall, fires starting to spread. ‘Now would be an excellent time to have a fire suppression system', I think to myself.

Only having a few seconds of engine power before being hit by the next EMP, I can barely move. First instinct is to put out the fires. With a quick run throught the submarine, I manage to put out all fires quickly with the pre-installed fire extuingishers. (Except one fire behind a locker, which I couldn’t reach).
Back to the bridge. Squids still on the rampage. ‘I must get out of here!’ Checking my hull, I see that I am pretty screwed, over half the ships strength has diminished. *Gulp* Then I remember. The fastest setting on the ship is called “Emergency”. I hit the button, and with a bit of extreme luck, I manage to zoom out of the suffocating grasp of 5 EMP’s being fired in series, getting only a few hits of EMP and squid claws on the way. ‘I’m out!’

My heart rate starts to decrease. I look to the hologram of the ship, first the radar, to see the squids not following me into the Lost River, then to my hull strength. First I notice the smoke, more fires definitely has started. Then I notice the massive damage to my ship, 12+ holes and ZERO hull strength. I literally cannot see 1 pixel of the indicating bar. I have to guess that I’m around 1% strength at this time.

Running through the ship yet again I manage to put out all fires before almost completely losing vision to the heavy smoke. That locker from before. There’s still a fire behind it, and I can’t put it out, which means I still take heavy damage from the smoke. I pick out a medkit of the fabricator beside the locker, and activate it just in time to save my life. ‘Back to the fire’

Trying to spray the fire from every angle without any effect, I decide to change my tactic. I must remove the locker! Luckily I have a Habitat builder (with power) in my inventory. But the locker is almost full of items. I have to pick them all up. They don’t fit in my inventory, so I quickly stash a few items to an adjacent locker, pick up the rest of the items, all while coughing the last of my life out.

At this point I can hear my girlfriend screaming through the headphones. ‘Your life! You need a medkit!!’

Again, the word ‘Emergency’ appears in my mind. Right behind me, in the build-in locker #5, I have a stash of emergency medkits, food and water! I hit a medkit with only a few HP left. I have to put out that fire now! I turn around, deconstructs the locker, and finally I put out the last flames. The smoke dissipates, and I look to my inventory. The extuingisher in my hand is my last, and it has 8% flame retarding juice left. Phew!

A few minutes later, and my ship is as good as new. I manage to go the last distance somewhat in peace, and can now start establishing my planned base!

This rocked my entire perspective of survival and horror gaming. I really love the cyclops now, while it was plain boring before. I know, I’m kinda massochistic that way.
I think I need to build that fire supression system. Oh, and also I need new pants.

Thanks for reading, and good luck surviving!
