How about a massive whale-like creature that has large quills for protection and a tail that is spade like in shape that it uses to propel itself through the water. The spade shape is like the symbol that is in a deck of cards. The quills could be bio-luminescent and if you accidentally get too close with the cyclops it becomes frightened and shoots quills out in multiple directions and then propels itself away rapidly. The projectile quills is something that could be left out though. Wish I had some art skills I would draw it up and a picture would get the devs attention better than just my comments alone. Also the whale-like creature could have a horn on it's head for fighting other males during mating season. You would find these whale-like creatures around the border/boundary of the map swimming 100 - 500 meters below sea level. Then it could dive way down deep for 30 minutes and come up for air.
A creature that can only be found on the idland? It would be as big as a wolf.I don't, it would be cool to have a land animal in a game where its mostly water.Even if you do see this and think its a good idea go crazy!!!

well, besides the cave crawler, the only aerial animal is the Sky ray. though some herbivorous animals on the islands would be intersting
A month later, and I'd say something similar to, say, the boxier crab would be a neat addition. <a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=ajo4fs" target="_blank"><img src="http://i66.tinypic.com/ajo4fs.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic"></a> Though I understand that the creatures to be implemented are probably already decided.
how about the exo-suit will be the new terraformer but it takes and places the stuff infuse sand with a common item like coral or somthing to make it rock me i'd use this to close off 1 of the nearby volcano shoots and make a tunnel for it to shoot its heat towards my base of operations so i can use the thermal plant and use the energy transfer crystals to my base be awesome so the exo-suit would have a shovel for sand maybe a drill for the rocks ^^
I had an idea for a large creature that drifts with currents as a large jellyfish thing, where if you have a reinforced suit, you could swim up to the tentacles and harvest samples for making a deep suit and upgrades.
like a gigantic manta ray about two times bigger. but it has bioluminescent spikes, that look like quarts, on its back. and it would hide in the sand and wait for someone to try and get, what looks like quarts, and then it would come out of the ground and devour you.
also it could grab on the side of you cyclops and drag it to the ground and disable it for about 5 seconds?
I want to see a small, cute, brightly colored fish that glow like nothing else. PASSIVE, they don't hurt or attack anything.
Behavior gimmick: They follow the player around and hover around them (steal Gravity Sphere code, focus on player, only this species of fish are effected). If you move slow enough they make for a great light source... at least until a hungry predator eats them. When they're right next to you. OK, so turns out there is a downside to them after all...
Thats already in the game, its called a Cutefish. Doesn't meet the exact details you laid out, but it follows the concept.
What about some sort of seal that is agressive that has blade like fins, goes on land, and sticks on your base/cyclops and breaks in and attacks you once you enter (it will give you a hull breach and can easily be killed)?
And and angler fish that is invisible with a random small fish on the lure that once you pick up the fish/get close the angler will reveal itself and attack you?
The science of the deep sea angler fish, is that their body should match the surrounding color when using the lure, that's why they often have a blood red or Amber color, because blue/cyan light doesn't reflect off the reddish skin. Rendering it invisible in the blue light
Elusive primitive Merfolk of course. those that keep their distance, travel in packs, and live in caves or coral tiled homes/communities. You can make them just apart of the beastiary, or maybe make them interactable with a lot of trust-factor involved, for things like trade of resources/coralmade-equipment.
I just gotta say... The fan devotion to this game is stunning. So much concept art! It's so cool!
Also, I have an idea. A very unique one.
Parasitic fungus. Don't have a name for it yet: It's a fungal infection that infects medium to large creatures with more fleshy bodies, so they wouldn't harm reefbacks, sandsharks, or bonesharks. The spores latch onto a part of a creature, burying its roots inside the flesh, but not thick roots at all, just thin ones with painkilling enzymes, so the fish doesn't know its there. Then, those roots suck up nutrients from the bloodstream, keeping the painkilling effect active. But, this painkilling effect affects the entire body, so, the creature won't really care if you hack at it with a knife. After a few days of being attached to the fish, it starts releasing spores, eventually finding another host. If too many are attached to one fish, the fish will starve and die, along with the fungal colony. And yes, the spores can attach to the player. However, since the player isn't an idiot, they'll notice and can cut them off once they've grown, or use a medical kit.

What about Warpers?
SCREW THE WARPERS!
No, not really... Of course, the Warpers are here to stay. But I really like the first and fifth merfolk pictures. I want to see them in the game too! T_T
Something with the concept of the mythical Siren. Except it's really another freaky-looking organism instead of a woman-bird creature. xD
Imagine hearing something almost human off in the distance that lures you closer. Let it have an array of "lures" to fool the player into thinking it's something else, and only when it's too late does the player realize they've made a horrible mistake. xD That would be super frightening and equally chilling, not knowing if you're being lured to your potentially imminent demise, or if you're on the verge of discovering something new.
Also something amphibious would be neat! The islands in the game as of now almost feel too safe, even with those annoying crabs all over the place. Think of a situation where you're being chased by a new predator, maybe you're lucky enough to be near your base or a nearby landmass, and when you think you've entered your safe zone, it just keeps coming!
A crab/scorpion like beast slightly taller than the cyclops which crawls on the bottom of the ocean near the Aurora. It's only dangerous if you're in the cyclops because it doesn't swim.
How about there would be predator fish that disguises as plant but when you get close enough it will attack. It could be like some eel or squid.
For example: It could be eel that disguises to seaweed like irl sea horses or maybe squid that lurks in shadows and it's tentacles pretends to be coral or seaweed. When you encounter this fish first time, it will be surprise to you but when you encounter it later you might recognize it early enough.
Just make it short: Fish that pretends to not be fish, but tries to eat you when you get too close. It could either do burst damage or cling to your face doing slow damage and preventing your visibility. I think that burst dmg would be good if it's eel and clingin absolutely better if squid. I can just imagine how awesome (and somekind of terryfying) it would be.
(My idea is based to sea horses, stone fishes, squids and those lurking fishes that creeps you on Super Mario underwater cave levels (Unagi?).)
Hello there I would like to know if this forum is still relevant? I've actually been thinking about joining and posting to this forum for a long time but life got in the way and I forgot about it. Would anyone be interested in continuing the discussion? I have a few alien critters I've sketched up recently and some old ones from 8/7 yrs ago. I'm no expert when it comes to drawing but I can get the general just of it onto the page. (recent ones are 4 cephalopods and one invertebrate) (old ones are quite random and entirely unrelated to subnautica)
I also suck at navigating websites so if I'm posting in the wrong place let me know.
Wanna make things far more interesting? On Earth, there is a specie of bees that, over years of evolution, changed its appearance to mimic the look of a fly.
Make the exact same thing with one or all species of small fish found in Subnautica. Approaching them would become a risk versus gain decision since they could very well be the predator and attack you.
Also, given how many giant aggressive creatures are planned on being added, I'd love to see a few more large passive creatures too.
how about the creatures in disguise have a slightly different texture. Mabey some dots or an upgrade to your hud alerting you if there are dangerous creatures nearby
I would love to see a gigantic deep sea kraken-esq creature with huge and very long tentacles that one or two shoots out of the deep at you, completely dwarfs you as it wraps around you or your vehicle, not attack you but checking you out. All you see are a few large tentacles that come from the darkness of the deep. This would be so scary and a really cool first encounter/random encounter that could trigger from time to time. Being able to have a deadly, full fledged encounter, up close and personal would be great later on. But knowing, somewhere in the deep, there is this extremely ancient, very large, very deadly and very intelligent creature watching you from time to time would be super unsettling.
Not to bite an already done idea but as an example of a great terror induced first encounter scene is what they did with Elite Dangerous and the first encounter with Thargoids.

That looks perfect for a deep and hard to reach biome

Use ion battery in grav traps to trap big monsters for a short time. When this time ends the monster breaks the "ion grav trap".
