Hi. I'm not sure how include quotes previous posts into my own post. Is there a tutorial about such things? Cheers.

Click the "Quote" button on the upper-right of the post(s) that you want quoted, in the order you want them quoted:

EDIT: If you're trying to quote from a different thread, then select the resulting text and cut it to the clipboard, then paste it into the new thread.

How so, just because OP asked a question and you simply did not notice that tiny link? That doesn't make you an idiot

@Quiet_Blowfish, might want to look into BBCode as well. It's a simplified version of scripting code used for post formatting on basically all forums. Very easy to use for non-coders and handy to know in any case

    Here another one..

On the forum list there's a couple of icons I don't quite understand. Every thread seems to sport a star, and some even have a gear-wheel to the left of the star as well.

It's a question from localization, but I don't know where else to ask. Could somebody from English speakers explain, what's the meaning of this entry:

CTO YU: We have to go back out there. We can't be the only two that made it.
OFFICER KEEN: Those are not the orders the captain gave me, and they are not the orders I'm giving you.
CTO YU: This isn't chain of command, it's survival. The more of us there are, the more likely we live.
OFFICER KEEN: My obligations as acting commander don't turn on their convenience. Get out of the water.
CTO YU: If I get into trouble, I'll send you my coordinates.
OFFICER KEEN: I'm not letting you go back out there alone. I'm coming with you. Just let me leave the PDA for anyone that makes it back here.

Specifically, what does it mean "don't turn on their convenience"? What did he mean under "convenience"?

You may need UWE to comment on this one. It's an odd choice of words. I think Keen is saying his command obligations aren't for convenience, that is the requirements of command aren't suggestions but demands and orders.

I think they mean the same as this alternative: "I am the acting commander and this isn't a suggestion. Get out of the water."

From other message from Lifepod 2, CTO Yu is a sort of do-it-himself sort of guy that's always doing something. And he doesn't want to wait and see who gets and follows the message about the rendezvous on the Floating Isle but go out and find other survivors to increase the numbers.

Officer Keen is following the last orders given to him by the Captain before the Aurora crashed, go to the rendezvous and take command of the survivors. As far as Keen knows, he's the senior officer surviving and that giving him ultimate command responsibility without limit on liability.

So CTO Yu being CTO Yu is defying Officer Keen. That's technically disobeying a lawful command, verging on mutiny in such dire circumstances. So Keen tries to come on strong to Yu. Yu doesn't even notice and just carries on. Keen decides better to stick with Yu and try to find others. According to Keen's postscript, follow Yu just got them both killed.

I think he means: "Doing my job does not mean helping them".

I think he means his obligations as acting commander don't simply go away when they become inconvenient. I'm not familiar with this phrasing, though.
  • SkopeSkope Wouldn't you like to know ;) Join Date: 2016-06-07 Member: 218212Members
If I'm not mistaken, that phrase would mean something akin to, "Just because others want my help, doesn't mean that I am required to help them."

Or at least, something like that.

What he means, is: "Given that I'm acting commander, I can't do everything at their Convenience. They're going to have to come here themselves."

Yup, that English is a slippery old eel.

I sometimes read these posts after I've already read them, which would mean I read them again once read. Now the question here is why did I read something that was read , when I read it before...

English is wonky, not even going into words that sound the same but have different meanings o/

We all started out here as idiot savants.
It's just that some of us didn't let the deep water pressure and lack of O2...,

... Stop us from continuing to be idiots.

You think English is wonky, try English English.

I think the star is to mark it as a favorite for yourself or something. And, just a guess, the gear only appears on threads you started? If so, that's where you can edit them without having to load the thread first, I think. Someone can confirm / deny this.

EDIT: Just checked, the star adds it to your "Bookmarks" which are located in the star icon at the top-top-right, underneath your User Control Panel icons. And the gear only appears next to threads I've started, so, looks like that's solved too.

English isn't wonky. It's quite regular. Everything about it is unregular, so You can still say It's regularly unregular. Regular is no longer a real word in my mind.

Best thing about English, you can be posh or a dickhead

    For example:
    "I beg your pardon?"
    "Wot?"

    I prefer friends banter:

    - This is my mate, Harry
    - He's a bit of a nob head

We Dutch do the same, I've yet to see American's do that and not get offended or worried you just actually insulted them :D Cultural differences \o/
