Server whitelisting

Is server whitelisting still a thing? If yes, please state when it is done and what rules apply to that. The information I gathered here in the forum is a little bit confusing and range from "do not install mods" to "if you mod does not change too much in the actual gameplay, it should be fine"....

A list of white listed mods is kinda a must yeah. Also is NS2 automatically checking which files a mod is changing? So, if it is accessing/changing non-white listed files, the mod isn't white listed?

    Hi,

servers are whitelisted after a short server review. To request such a review please contact @McGlaspie (might be faster to ask him via discord)

The basic requirements for getting white listed are currently:
    • Natural Selection 2 game play
    • No round report manipulation or attempts to do so
    • 12 - 42 player slots
    • Server performance should be at least "Okay"
    • Client performance at the server should be similar or better compared to a vanilla setup.
    • Foster a friendly community
    • No "admin abuse"
    • No "core gameplay" changing tweaks/mods
    • No server modifications that change, bypass or manipulate the steam inventory (skin/badges) system

Some of those requirements are rather vague by design and up to our interpretation for each server.

Edit: It's also okay to run custom game mode mods at ranked/white-listed servers as long as those mods are declare as custom game mode by changing the game mode in the game_setup.xml

How does the whitelisting work technically though? Are servers whitelisted by ip/hostname, or do the admins get some whitelist file/key? If it works by ip, how to get a server with dynamic ip whitelisted?

AFAIK, mods/files are whitelisted, not servers specifically. So I'd guess the server browser does a simple check for non-whitelisted mods, files or settings running on a server and proceeds to exclude them from the "almightly list of whitelisted servers". I mean it wouldn't really make sense to whitelist servers based on IP, right?

Well there is a file called RankedServers.json in the game files which contains a list of server IPs, and the whitelisting is done manually as stated above, and not by the server browser. So Id'k like to know whether its really just IP, and how to deal with changing server IP then.

    I stand corrected!
