Though it seems as if it couldn't be possible, Dungeon Keeper 2 improves upon the original in almost every way. I can just sit in front of the "My Pet Dungeon" mode for hours...
And when you get the patch, you get what I am convinced is the greatest unit EVER: The Maiden of the Nest. Super ****-kicker, there. And her laugh...
Oni... I loved Oni. I didn't feel like it had any replay value at all, though, so I'm glad I borrowed it as opposed to buying it. A more open-ended structure would have been great... like some kind of hybrid between GTA III and Oni.
If you can get Gunman for HELLA cheap (like, under five bucks), go for it. I bought it for 10 and thought it was pretty good, just not worth that much. I mean... it was short as hell. I beat it in a few hours. I had really high expectations for it, too...
I found Dugeon Keeper 1 OK for a while - had the I lost at this level three times, cannot be bothered to try again problem. Also, the multiplayer sucked, since you could only do deathmatch. Does Dungeon Keeper 2 let you play Co-op against the computer? Might give it a buy if it does. There is quite a nice Virtual Machine program - sort of emulates a PC on your desktop. You still need DOS disks, but all the driver problems are sorted out (except mouse, strangely, but a generic mouse driver works fine). Annoyingly, cannot remember the name of the program, but there is only one which gives you SVGA drivers in DOS, and it has a 30 day free trial. After that it cost $270, so only if you really cannot face having to reboot/ set up dual boot for your dos games.
Games, err, let me think. Transport Tycoons been mentioned ... A ha! Civilisation II is great for killing time. Got a steep learning curve, and its not exactly action packed, but it will eat all your time up. Should be able to pick it up cheap now...
Any of the Bull Frog games really are great classics. I Used to play some crazy DK, and of course Magic Carpet. MC was crazy fun to play, and really good multiplayer. And I got into syndicate plus for quite a while in the old win 3.1 days.
I too have the same affliction. Being cheap, I constantly hit up the Half Price Books near my house and can find TONS of these games that people have bought, and have decided against keeping. I can even, on occation, find new games for half off. Here are some of the better, older games that I have found in my searches.
RTS: Dark Reign 1 and 2 - If you like RTS, these are the two best games, one being better. With full ingame AI customization of your troops, decent storyline, full 3d graphics/camera control on the second and decent 2d graphics for the first.
Dungeon Keeper - While not the best grpahics, the fact that that your minions have personalities and can be posessed, allowing you to go FPS in your own world (remind you of another game?) , is great. (never played 2, but hear its good)
Hostile Waters:Anteus Rising - great strat game. Unfortunately there is no multiplayer (what a shame). Allows you to command the equivalent of bots in land sea and air vehicles, while also allowing you to take over and pilot those same vehicles.
Sacrifice - a kick *** RTS/RPG. Play a summoner that runs about the map casting spells and summoning creatures while battling other sorcs. great graphics.
Fallout Tactics - (if you can find it cheap) being a fan of the fallout series, this game ruled. The chance to take a team of characters and kick the *** off of muties and robots that you never would have in the first games.
Homeworld - excellent 3D (and i mean this literally, not just 3D graphics, but an actual Z plane that units can move on) strategy set in the dead of space. Try this if you want to see actual computer dogfights between computer space fighters. (and in what other RTS does your fleet and tech trees stay with you, eliminating that frustrating basic research at the beginning of each mission.)
Homeworld Cataclysm - The only reason that i do not include this with HW, is that it is a stand-alone package, not requiring HW to play. This takes the basic engine and improves on it, including time compression, better graphics, moving motherships, and a new race.
Startopia - Another fairly new game that never really hit it off. This game is more of a SIM Space Station than anyting else. Build up your space station while diverting revenue from your competitors(sp?). In this Val (your virtula artifical lifeform) has some very funny one liners to break up the monotomy of inter-galactic space plagues and Worker revolts. Its capatalism in the 41st century.
Battle Realms and xpac - can be found in a package for ~$20. Fairly decent RTS, focousing on building small, versitile squads rather than on large armies. Good 3D graphics.
most of the -craft series can be found cheap now as well
(Also found a package which has all 4 c&c games (no xpacs) for 30$)
FPS (not counting HL or mods) MDK 1 and 2- A funny, futuristic FPS with many twists and fun characters. My personal favorite is Max, the 4 armed, 2 legged, chain smoking, robotic dog.
Giants: Citizen Kabuto - A decent and large FPS involving 3 races on HUGE islands, base building, rescource gathering and a very funny storyline in the spirit of the Hitchhiker's guide.
RPG Fallout 1 and 2 - IMHO the best RPGs ever made. Takes the post apocolyptic(sp?) RPG to a new level, with an immense world in which every action that you take has a bearing on characters' view of your character and the outcome of the game.
Arcanum:Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura - Another RPG with an excellent storyline and immense replayability. Made by the makers of the fallout series. This came out about a year ago, but it may be finding its way to the bargin bins soon.
Septerra core - I began playing this one a while ago and never finished it (very rare). The gameplay was fairly simple, the graphics decent for its time. The storyline was what really set this one apart for me.
Vampire:The Masquerade - Redemption - Top notch storyline, excellent gameplay, decent graphics. An all around must have.
Baldur's gate 1, 2 and xpacs - some of the longest PC RPGs out there, with excellent storyline. Decent 2D graphics. Not sure if Throne of Bhaal would be in most bargain bins as of now.
Baldurs Gate 2 is awsome, casters are pain to take down since they get more protection spells then last game. It also looks nice too.
One game I thought was pretty cool was Majesty, it didnt seem to get much press. Its pretty much a RTS, with the exception being that you place bounties on the stuff you want destroyed, rather then just creating units. High bounty = more guys attacking that object/thing.
I got about 1/2 way through it then I reformatted...didnt feel like running through it again Looks very nice though.

just reinstalled MDK2 (wasn't working) and dear god I do love that
I am not a RTS fan (can't stand em), I SORTA liked DK
Sacrifice sounds cool I have been looking for Giants I have Tribes II coming in the mail (amazon.com $10, get 15 more $ worth of stuff and free shiping)
@Feyd, lol you are the ONLY person who liked VTM that I know (used to realy be into WW and I still have alot of friends who are into it)
basicaly the gripes were that the controll system blew chunks.
hehe, I jsut reinstalled so many of my old ame,s I am getting Tribes II. And I have been (dear god help me) thinking of reinstalling DII and the expansion I AM NOT GOING TO GET ANY WORK DONE THIS TERM HELP ME!!!!

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. I reinstalled that game a couple of days ago and have been having a great time with it. What really strikes me as odd is that PC Gamer gave it a 98% rating (the highest ever given), then abadoned it about two months later and never played it again. It seems everyone else did, too.
I haven't been able to get the expansion to work on my computer (SMAC has issues with new computers), but when I played it originally it was loads of fun.
I enjoyed every minute of Homeworld (incidentally, Homeworld 2 is in development)and Startopia.
System Shock 2 was great, though sometimes inexplicably scary (I think it was the hybrids follwing you into rooms that did it).
Alpha Centauri was also another classic (although as ugly as sin). It played very well, though.
Anybody heard of Metal Fatigue? It was basically another 3d strategy game, but it put in lots of new ideas (like the way that you play on three 'levels' of the battleground simultaneously... and those combot things were great fun to watch). The game got good reviews - it just never seemed to get the attention it deserved.
Majesty, as said before. Wonderfully fun game, really cheap nowadays. Tribes 1 is much better then Tribes 2, and still alive. Tropico would be my #1 favorite not-super-popular game. It is hilarious, has a great atmosphere, and is darn fun! Civ 2 and Dark Reign 1 were fun, I can't speak for Dark Reign 2. Earth 2150 was neato, and frentic at times.
Giants, Sacrifice & Metal fatige were all great games.
Dont know why Giants & Sacrifice bombed, possably Giants because it had a lot of jokes that non UK players may either have not found funny or just not got.
As for metal fatige having played it, single wasnt to different from many others once you got past some of its features and multiplayer code was worse than ST:Armada 1 & 2, which was extremly difficult to pull off considering how bad theirs was, heck it doesnt even work properly on a 100mbit network.
Games that havnt been mentioned, erm, Outlive. Outlive had an appaling single player imo, but its multiplay for LANs was fairly ok, especialy with it dual control of units for larger games(2 players could play as one side controling the same units/reasorces if done well made for some rather good micro management of attacks on multiple points.)
If you can find it Total Annihilation is on buget in some places. Also if you want to retry a old game DOOM/DOOM2/Heritic/Hexen have now all redone and given updated graphics by several ppl, my favorite is http://www.doomsdayhq.com/ not that they bombed but they can definatly be got on buget.
Serious Sam games are great. Love that Smash TV style gameplay.
Not to mention all the cool effects Croteam has made with their engine. Sweeeet sweet special effects...
Fallout 1 & 2 must play RPG Sacrifice I think is one the games that has the biggest learning curve ever (possibly the reason for it's down fall but awesome once you are in the grove of thing if know what I mean) now I’m putting sacrifice back on my comp now to mention it Blood 2 good single player action pity the multiplier and engine sucked never played the first

For the unenlightened, Sacrifice is a very shiny *cough* third-person strategy game where your commander (wizard) runs around in the map with his troops alongside him. You summon creatures to fight for you (all spells take mana, including summoning ones) but summoning creatures takes souls. When creatures die, their souls pop out and can be collected again by you. Enemy souls have to be specially purified.
It's graphically stunning (well, it was for it's time. It's still pretty good now) and the gameplay's pretty cool. In all, the critics loved it, it was clever and innovative, and it didn't get nearly the respect it deserved.
Speaking of which, even though I only played the demo I think the Theif series deserves a mention here

MMM. More SMAC sexiness. Nothing beats conquering the world with peacekeepers renamed as "H.A.R.M.," complete with a fleet of "Super-Secret Submarines."
OH YES, hostile waters was so genius in my opinion, the fact that u could control a vehicle/chopper/plane instead of a stupid? AI was good, something i had longed for a long time
just loved making that rover type vehicle and drive around with cloak and shield
oh and btw, i think serious sam is a great game, reminds me a little of duke nukem in odds of survival and humour

Ye olde Elder Scrolls games Arena and Daggerfall and the Elite trilogy, while these games sold like pokemon cards back when they came out, nowadays most people dont even know they exist, which is too bad, as they are some of the best games ever made, some people consider Daggerfall to be better than morrowind, while I dont think it is, it definitly has a lot of cool stuff morrowind doesnt (werewolfs, doors that lock at night, horses, 9 gajillion square miles of... stuff, seasons and about 500 other things I cant remember right now). Arena was a bit *too* old school to me but some people like it.
Elite=Arena in space, Elite:Frontier=umm, a sequell to Elite I guess, Frontier:First Encounter=Daggerfall in space, Nuff said.
The elite games are easy enough to get, just get the shareware versions here, if you plan on playing the best one (first encounter) you should go here, because without it its the worst (plus you cant run it in windows with out jjfe).
The ES games, however, are a different story, you cant find it in stores anymore, but its not abandonware (certain a'ware is legal by the way) so the only legal way to get it is from ebay.

Betrayal at Krondor. You can download it (legally) for free at The Home of the Underdogs. You'll need to boot to DOS to play it, though.
I usually don't go for 3rd person action adventures, but Legacy of Kain 2: Soul Reaver was very nice. The controls were somewhat annoying but the pretty visuals (and the nice twisting of the landscape when the player shifts from the real world into the spirit world and back) made up for it.
Monolith games are mostly ok but the newer ones suffer from the company's own LithTech engine. It is capable of rendering ok visuals but sometimes the FPS goes down the drain for no particular reason, which is annoying.
[edit] Dungeon Keeper 2 is NOT awesome. It is, in fact, one of the most boring, toyish, gimmicky and repetitive games ever published. Oh yeah, a lady decked in full-body PVC does wonders for sales but doesn't make the game any better.
Hostile Waters - Tom Baker does the cutscene narration - rock!
Startopia - Amazingly cute and fun management game, with fab music
Giants: Citizen Kabuto - Very rarely do games succeed in being funny when they try to be, but the Mecc race's cutscenes (and other voice sounds - e.g. "Ooh, my leg!" for fall damage) have me giggling every time I play. The graphics were awesome too.
Battlezone II - The game absolutely rocked - fab sounds, fab concept, incredible graphics. Why no-one bought it is a mystery to me.

i can that intro music from first encounter totally memorized
Elite=Arena in space, Elite:Frontier=umm, a sequell to Elite I guess, Frontier:First Encounter=Daggerfall in space, Nuff said.
The elite games are easy enough to get, just get the shareware versions here, if you plan on playing the best one (first encounter) you should go here, because without it its the worst (plus you cant run it in windows with out jjfe).
The ES games, however, are a different story, you cant find it in stores anymore, but its not abandonware (certain a'ware is legal by the way) so the only legal way to get it is from ebay.

[edit]
Dungeon Keeper 2 is NOT awesome. It is, in fact, one of the most boring, toyish, gimmicky and repetitive games ever published. Oh yeah, a lady decked in full-body PVC does wonders for sales but doesn't make the game any better.
Rats.......
