Although I may be wrong, I don't believe that the NS team intentionally created the gameplay so that 3 hives equaled endgame. Rather, I believe that they intended that as aliens were able to get 3 hives, marines were able to upgrade to combat it still and have at least a half decent chance to come back.
So saying, although I love the ability to death, Primal Scream is just so damn ridiculously over-powered it isn't funny. As an onos I can run into a base full of turrets with PS, horn almost every marine in the base, and take out the TF (with time to get out) - and quite often it is in one go.
Therefore the new Devour ability will be very fitting as it isn't quite as powerful, yet still useful - unless of course you are still able to attack while devouring somebody. In that case it is still considerably overpowered. Unless there is a few seconds wait time while an Onos takes a mouthful until they are able to move again - perhaps even two seconds wait time. That way, rather than encouraging the Onos to run in, take a bite and run off, it will be more of a finishing ability (or support ability), where you would run in to gouge a marine or two and then take the time to take off with a marine.
And while I would personally like to see Charge gone (seeing as it is quite useless with PS right now, although it may come in more use if PS is replaced), if you think about it Paralysis should be taken out and replaced, as this also makes them too powerful to the only practical way of combating the almighty Onos.
On the OTHER hand, I do believe that the marines are aquiring a few more weapons (and hopefully something else to make the prototype lab more useful), so perhaps all this typing was done in vain and is completely useless, no doubt the NS team has already thought about most of the advantages and disadvantages of all of these abilities and have tried to counter problems during their play-testing.

Guess you are wrong this time, somewhen the team mentioned that they wanted Ns to be balanced at a 2 hive state and 3 hive abilities are supposed to be game enders, if you look at all the other 3rd hive attacks it becomes obvious, that theyre much more devestating than any marine counter.
As for the new ability, sounds funny, but i guess that i have to see how it works ingame before i judge it. /me really hopes it will replace paralysis that isnt used by most people. Or maybe charge. It's true that the kill command can be a little problem here, disable it if u can (i have myself a suicide bind that i use in some cases, like when i got webbed/healsprayed). For ppl speaking about balance issues; If u give an HA and GL + welder to a single marine, and let him go alone, then he deserve to die/be devoured. It will force marines to group more, so when someone is devoured, they have a chance to kill the onos and save their friend --> "Phieww thanks guys" = teamplay = good & fun.

I would suggest replacing harge with this and putting some kind of charge+bite combo to Onos' first ability. Devour = kind of bite so thats why you could put charge/bite thingy to first slot. I'm still unsure about this. While on paper it sounds a good idea, in practice it could turn out to be a bad mistake.
I mean personally I wouldn't want to spend an age in some Ono's stomach. Doing nothing just isn't fun. Sure the first time it happens you'll think "Whoa thats a cool idea!" but then eventully, I just think the whole process would end up being repetative and the type of thing that is more likely to leave the game or get really annoyed and leave the server or type kill. I don't want to spend most of my time in some Ono's stomach because frankly that is immensely boring (If it keeps happening.)
The way I see it is that it ought not to harm HA way too big and at least give the digesting player the ability to attack back in some way, knife random shooting whatever. The other fear is that marines find it hard to kill an Onos anyway. (With basic weaponary at least.) So my idea would be to either reduce the amount of HP the Onos has OR make it more vunerable while digesting.
But thats only my idea but what I'm really not looking forward too is some lamer standing near the marine spawn and devouring newly spawned marines. I just think that as an ability it could be seriously abused.
Venmoch I half agree. One of the most irritating things I find about ploaying aliens is sitting around waiting to evolve into the higher lifeforms.
To people worried about Onos being able to gobble up a HA and killing them with one click. Heavy armour will probably take quite a while to digest. Onos cannot use devour ability while digesting, so the Onos is now short an ability. Yes an Onos can kill a lone HA bloke with ease, but since when are HA marines supposed to be able to go up against an Onos singlehandely? One HA gobbled, team mates try and kill the weakened Onos (weakened as he is missing an ability) before HA is digested. I think the Onos should be slowed while digesting marines though, but thats a balance issue.
Yep, slowing down Onos when he digest HA's, thats a good idea. Also I would like people to have extra punishment(longer than normal time) for typing kill in console. As an addition, how about adding the ability to spit the semi-digested marine out again. That is, if you hit "Devour" whilst already digesting a marine, he get spat out at high velocity and receives even more damage when he whacks into a wall?
Think of the possibilities! Two Onos could juggle a marine, by taking it in turns swallowing him and then spitting him at each other. It was mentioned that devour might make the Onos too powerful. I sure know I'd use that as my first attack against HA marines. So if it's found to be an unbalanced attack, slow the Onos's movement rate down a bit - representing the added weight. Might want to make this variable depending on what type of marine was swallowed; HA marines are heavier weight so would slow an Onos more.

For the record, the Onos hitbox currently has... issues. Hopefully these will be addressable in 1.1; if they are, I think you will find Onos much more killable.
Same thing with the marines. I was chomping from directly underneath a marines feet (marine was jerpacking in the corner of a room) and never killed him even after about 10 seconds of chomping.
As for the trying to kill them when crouching or in vents, I'm sure people know about this (don't check here too often).

well, here is me...
everyone talks about how great it was for onos and so on, but also think of the poor little marine inside the onos... 30 secs for a marine to die... then think about the massive armor you get with upgrades or ha... well, perhaps its just me, but I dont want to wait for 30 / 45 / 60 seconds inside an onos doing nothing and seeing a black screen: BOOOOORING !!!!!

Only weapons i use as a <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif'><!--endemo--> is bite (gore?) and primal scream (you go faster with primal scream too anyway, plus it helps others = teamplay, really good ability).

It's true that the kill command can be a little problem here, disable it if u can (i have myself a suicide bind that i use in some cases, like when i got webbed/healsprayed). Oh and maybe disable gestating while you devour someone, so we don't see exploding skulks/weird things <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
For ppl speaking about balance issues; If u give an HA and GL + welder to a single marine, and let him go alone, then he deserve to die/be devoured. It will force marines to group more, so when someone is devoured, they have a chance to kill the onos and save their friend --> "Phieww thanks guys" = teamplay = good & fun.

I would suggest replacing harge with this and putting some kind of charge+bite combo to Onos' first ability. Devour = kind of bite so thats why you could put charge/bite thingy to first slot. IMO the offense chamber should give the offense upgrades, that means, choosing between getting: Charge or Devour

Just seems a bit like giving a tank a nuke, you know. I just find it a bit strange the Onos gets something that poweful. COOL! Very very cool and orignal. But powerful. Ech. What a way to go. Lord.....what an experince, too.

I mean personally I wouldn't want to spend an age in some Ono's stomach. Doing nothing just isn't fun. Sure the first time it happens you'll think "Whoa thats a cool idea!" but then eventully, I just think the whole process would end up being repetative and the type of thing that is more likely to leave the game or get really annoyed and leave the server or type kill. I don't want to spend most of my time in some Ono's stomach because frankly that is immensely boring (If it keeps happening.)
The way I see it is that it ought not to harm HA way too big and at least give the digesting player the ability to attack back in some way, knife random shooting whatever. The other fear is that marines find it hard to kill an Onos anyway. (With basic weaponary at least.) So my idea would be to either reduce the amount of HP the Onos has OR make it more vunerable while digesting.
But thats only my idea but what I'm really not looking forward too is some lamer standing near the marine spawn and devouring newly spawned marines. I just think that as an ability it could be seriously abused.
To people worried about Onos being able to gobble up a HA and killing them with one click. Heavy armour will probably take quite a while to digest. Onos cannot use devour ability while digesting, so the Onos is now short an ability. Yes an Onos can kill a lone HA bloke with ease, but since when are HA marines supposed to be able to go up against an Onos singlehandely? One HA gobbled, team mates try and kill the weakened Onos (weakened as he is missing an ability) before HA is digested. I think the Onos should be slowed while digesting marines though, but thats a balance issue.
As an addition, how about adding the ability to spit the semi-digested marine out again. That is, if you hit "Devour" whilst already digesting a marine, he get spat out at high velocity and receives even more damage when he whacks into a wall?
Think of the possibilities! Two Onos could juggle a marine, by taking it in turns swallowing him and then spitting him at each other. Or you could see how high/far you could spit a marine in one of the large rooms. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Also, once the marine has been fully digested the Onos could, erm, evacuate its bowels, depositing a lump of onos-poop complete with marine helmet and armour sticking out of it. roflness!

It was mentioned that devour might make the Onos too powerful. I sure know I'd use that as my first attack against HA marines. So if it's found to be an unbalanced attack, slow the Onos's movement rate down a bit - representing the added weight. Might want to make this variable depending on what type of marine was swallowed; HA marines are heavier weight so would slow an Onos more.

That would mean you could only ever get 3 of 4 hives, unless the maps are altered for 4 hives or offense upgrades are always available - a free upgrade from the game's start. There's other possibilities I guess.
As for the trying to kill them when crouching or in vents, I'm sure people know about this (don't check here too often).

30 secs for a marine to die...
then think about the massive armor you get with upgrades or ha...
well, perhaps its just me, but I dont want to wait for 30 / 45 / 60 seconds inside an onos doing nothing and seeing a black screen: BOOOOORING !!!!!
