Psssh. Alienware... overpriced 'custom' machines. You can do the same thing for less than half the cost, and do it *better*. Heck, I just put together a system for a friend that beats out their 'Hive-mind' system option ($2389, before tax), for $600.. from flat-ground up. NS looks beautiful running at 1600x1200x32 (6xFSAA, 16x Aniso) with the frames capping at 100 solid, and a timerefresh running between 400-600fps. Not to mention that it still hasn't gone above 45C at any point, even with all the case fans turned to their lowest settings.

Just gotta know how to slap 'em together right, and which parts to splurge on to get the best quality out of the machine.

I would like to see NS move to a free engine. I think that currently no engine (including hl) is really designed for what ns is trying to achieve so modifiying a (decent) free one would be a logical alternative. (Also staing that NS is free is a bit inaccurate at the moment because you have to buy hl first.) <a href='http://wouter.fov120.com/cube/' target='_blank'>cube</a> is an interesting engine because you can edit maps from within the game! But at the moment it doesn't support enough stuff that ns would need. A more realistic alternative is <a href='http://crystal.sourceforge.net/drupal/' target='_blank'>Crystal Space</a> which looks cool. (It has a particle system, and an ascii renderer <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> )

The original HL took a long time to make (not as long as its taken for HL2, assuming they started within a year of the original HL release). By right, I mean great game, very easy to mod, and featuring some kind of conversion process to bring existing HL mods to HL2 without too much extra hassle by the coders.

Of course, I am completely speculating, but then Valve wouldn't be practicing a very smart business model if the only thing they had in their pockets was Steam. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
may have taken a long time, but they still rushed it at end or there wouldn't be a choke in the code preventing the cpu usage to go down <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Hl2 will have a way better particle system then NS, and this is a FACT.

But im still wondering why ppl start saying things like NS should be on a better engine, Ns isnt even finished on this engine for crying out loud! And besides, I woudnt want to see that Flayra and others will stop workin on 1.1 and instead start workin on Ns on a new engine wich will take a few years, (read a few years with us still playin 1.04)...

When was HL2 officialy annouced. I have seen a few things on planet HL a while back but they have admitted they were jokes or hinted onto it. The way valve does it you are far more likely to see TF2 before HL2

Hmmz HL2 and TF are not just lies and fairy tales there is just no point in bringing them out right now. Think about it if you have something good going on that's making you money you will milk if for all you can before replacing it won't you? HL is still going strong, the quality and popularity of it's mods speak for it's self. People are still buying copies of HL so they can play these great online mods until this starts to slow down significantly and the amount of people playing CS, DoD, FA, NS etc begins to drop HL2 and TF2 will remain on hold.

Anyway from what I have read on the DoD forums about this the TF2 engine is the engine that will support the mods and not the HL2 engine. CS and DoD will make the trip to the CS - CZ in due time so maybe NS will as well.

CS CZ is pretty much just a HL mod. Its single player CS and CS sucks, no doupt it will have its own built in wall hacks and aimbots.

U can already test part of the multiplayer through steam if u got it.

You got it, there will frequently be more idiots and morons the world over than there will be intellectuals, hence the propagation of CS, works for me though, if CS does not exist simultaneously with NS, then some of the idiots might bleed over into this beloved mod :-x

Edit - Yeah, I'd like to see this $600 wonder computer that's better than an alienware myself, I just spent about a G on mine (probably because I splurged on certain aspects)

    The motherboard - asus p4g8x deluxe, $220
    intel p4 2.4ghz - $190
    1 gig pc2100 ram - $170
server case with 400w power supply - $100
    Windows xp pro - $140
    radeon 9700 pro - $270

and i already had the floppy & cdrom/burner drives from an old comp, as well as keyboard, mouse, monitor, all that good stuff.

its not necessarily top of the line, but it more than makes do for me <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

the last screenshots i saw of Team Fortress 2 were showing that the engine for it was exactly the same as Half-Life except that the player models were more high-poly and had many stages of Level Of Detail which i think the game engine could make for modellers automatically. that is all. i'm sorry but that doesn't cut it. it better have curve shaders and bump mapping and gloss mapping by now or i will laugh and point.

Fry's Electronics, on this particular one. I could have done it for less (and probably even better, given the extra cash to play with) if I'd bothered to wait for a computer show.

    Athlon XP2200+
    ASUS A7V8X mobo (I LOVE ASUS! ^_^)
    512MB PC2700 DDR
    ATI Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB
    40GB HDD
    DVD-ROM
    Enermax Pre-Mod Case
    SBLive! Value

Mobo and CPU came in a combo deal weighing at around $200, RAM was $40 more. Case came with a 350-watt PSU for $60. DVD-ROM was $40 off the shelf. SBLive Value, $20. HDD ran up around a $60 price tag, but only because the new owner didn't really want to go for anything larger just yet. R9500 Pro 128 was the second-most expensive part, at around $160 after an in-store rebate. Add in tax, and it ended up right around $600. Out-of-the-box (so to speak) it already clocked into the low 11,000 range with 3DMark2002SE, using standard 'balanced' settings in the Catalyst 3.1 drivers. I've been tweaking it around, and scored in the midrange 13,000s.
Next up: Soft9700 Pro. Get to watch its performance jump as the full texturing units are unlocked, and the memory bus bandwidth is brought back up to the full 256 bits. Not as good as a full-on 9700 Pro, but worth it considering the $200+ saved.

Currently, the only thing that I've thrown at it that it's even batted an eyelash at was the 'Mother Nature' demo in 3DMark2003. Which has been admitted already to not being anywhere near a proper test, given that it makes EVERY video card so far (including the GF-FX) choke down to tiny framerates. The first one (the dogfight) runs at perfect framerates even with 6xFSAA and 16x anisotropic filtering forced on. Even the horror of the UT2K3 demo can't kill it. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Valve Files For Chapter 11
    4/1/2002 0:40 PST | Community | by redef |
Well this comes as a definite shock, Valve has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. I guess this means Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 are mere memories. They issued a big press release here:
Valve Software Files for Chapter 11 Reorganization
Kirkland, Washington – Valve Software, the creators of the famed computer software game Half-Life, today filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in Washington bankruptcy court. The company said it is taking this action in light of its unreimbursed royalty and copyright costs which are now increasing by more than $1 million per month, continuing CPUC decisions that economically disadvantage the company, and the now unmistakable fact that negotiations with Governor Gray Davis and his representatives are going nowhere.

Neither Sierra nor any of its other subsidiaries, including Gearbox Software, have filed for Chapter 11 reorganization or are affected by the gaming giant’s filing.

"We chose to file for Chapter 11 reorganization affirmatively because we expect the court will provide the venue needed to reach a solution, which thus far the State and the State's regulators have been unable to achieve," said Pat Goodwin, VP Finance of Valve Software. "The copyright and royalty processes have failed us, and now we are turning to the court."

Goodwin added, "Our objective is to move through the Chapter 11 reorganization process as quickly as possible, without disruption to our operations or inconvenience to our customers. Throughout this crisis, our 20 employees have been and remain committed to providing safe and reliable service to the 13 million gamers who depend on us to deliver Condition Zero later this quarter."

Valve Software decided to file for the protection of Chapter 11 primarily due to:

Failure by the state to assume the full procurement responsibility for Valve Software’s "net open position" as was provided under AB1X. This has the result of increasing financial exposure to unreimbursed royalty costs, which the company estimates to be approximately $1 million or more per month.
The impact of actions by the RIAA on March 27, 2001, and April 3, 2001, that created new payment obligations for the company and undermined its ability to return to financial viability.
Lack of progress in negotiations with the state to provide recovery of $3 million in royalties paid by the company since June 2000, which have not been recoverable in frozen rates.
"In addition, despite Valve Software’s best efforts to work with the State of Washington to reach a consensual, responsible, fair and comprehensive solution to royalties and copyrights, no agreement has been reached with the Governor and the Governor's representatives have dramatically slowed the pace and the progress of discussions over the past month.
"Furthermore since last fall, we have filed comprehensive plans for resolving this matter with the Supreme Court, but they have not acted affirmatively on them," said Goodwin.

"Statements by the Governor and other public officials since last September gave us reason to believe that a solution could be reached outside the context of Chapter 11 that would restore the company’s financial viability and enable it to meet its financial obligations equitably. However, these statements have not been followed up by constructive actions, and a reorganization in Chapter 11 is now the most feasible means of resolution."

The company will utilize existing resources to continue operating its business during bankruptcy, including paying vendors and suppliers in full for goods and services received after the filing. The company will pay developers as provided by law. The company intends to continue normal development and distribution functions during the Chapter 11 process. Employees will continue to be paid. Health care plans and other benefits for employees and most retirees will continue.

PHL does this every year, on the same day, and STILL people fall for it. Heck, they even left a clue at the bottom of the page...

    "What's the date? April something?"

April 1st... what falls on that day? Groundhog day? No, thats not it... Christmas? Nice thought, but no... wait, is it... APRIL FOOLS DAY?! They have a golden crowbar in their office, and are continuing to work on their projects (Steam, CS 1.6, TF2). Valve is not bankrupt.

Besides, does anyone else find it odd that it was posted on April Fools day, and yet their "bankrupsy" was never, ever mentioned again?

    Valve Files For Chapter 11
    <b><span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>4/1/2002 0:40 PST </span></b>| Community | by redef |

Talesin, if you got a rig that runs like that for $600, you must be using witchcraft. Seriously, can we get any more detailing information on your sources and software? My current system has a 1.2Ghz Athalon, GeForce 4 Ti4600, 384MB of PC2100 SDRAM, and WinXP Home; UT2K3 was not a pretty sight (the slideshow was, though). This stuff would be a godsend, seeing as how I only have a thousand bucks saved up and ready to burn... Why don't you want Microsoft to buy them (I know, I know, Xbox exclusivity)? They would _never_ keep it from the PC, because that's where they would get the most cash and support from. Look what they're doing to Halo, releasing it a year later on PC. Not that I would care, since I have a dusty Xbox eager as hell to play some Halo 2... IF THEY WERE EVEN BANKRUPT! YOU APRIL FOOLS!

Nah, not witchcraft. Just watching the sale papers, and knowing which parts to scrimp, and which to splurge on. Computer shows probably would have pushed it down even further, estimate around $500 if I found a good dealer who would do full-bundle packages. Living in southern california /does/ have a few up sides. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Also, running it under Win98 has a big impact. Whistler really bogs stuff down like that.

Back to the HL2 topic, I really hope that if they /do/ put it out, they'll have a Linux version as well (run it even FASTER through X, without having to deal with the Wine slowdown or sound lag issues). Less GUI overhead, more intelligent coding schemes. Plus, if there's a problem with a component that ISN'T a part of the HL binary itself, you'll usually have a fix out for it in a matter of days on average. Two weeks on the outside, an hour on the better.
