Maybe I'm being too hard on what is just a collection of gaming sites, but a lot of the smaller sites seem to be much better in that regard - they don't have some commercial agenda to push. It's done for fun, not money.
As a dialup user (no broadband where I live) I've found Fileplanet incredibly annoying to use. Being asked to wait over an hour for a 50kB file, complete with megabytes of adverts, got beyond a joke. If they claim it's bandwidth costs that are the problem, how come they can always get the popup ads to you?
Also, trying to download a large file over a non-resumable connection isn't my idea of fun. If I can't wget -c it, I'm not interested. Sorry.
And now what's happened to this Serious Sam site? If even half of that is true, GameSpy Inc have some very hard questions to ask themselves.
But I will be - personal file server is t3h sh1zzle.
