    Good guide, but with lots of faults.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->

    I started as an alien and did kinda well in my first game.  Probably because the marine team was full of n00bs with no commander and all waiting for that non-existent elite team that you talk about.  Since then teh average standard of playing is better, but I feel I'm a better player because I started as alien.  I'm not one of the marines whinging on this forum about fades being indestructible because I have played as all of the Aliens and know their weaknesses.  The marine weaknesses are obvious.

    <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Have you ANY idea how irritating n00b gorges are. I once had one who went to a hive loc stright away and saved for a hive for 15 minutes. Didn't even build a res tower. Idiot.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->

    If you know onw map you know them all.  D, M, S.  This may change with v1.1.  Maybe.

    <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    No, no, NO!!!! A n00b gorge will build them in all the wrong places and waste res. The hive doesn't yet nedd defences: skulks can rush back when the hive sight tells them the hive is in danger.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->

    This is dubious.  Aliens tend to attack hive sites then put up fortifications and attack.  Normally if the aliens have 2 hives they have a big advantage.  As an alien I spend most time hunting marines and attacking marines base/hive location as a fade.  I only defend at the start when the marines rush the first hive.
    You also say marines should attack: no, they should take the hives early and defend them.

    <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Once again referring to my first experince, I went onos and was one of 2 that completely destroyed the marines base. Yes, now that players are more experienced, a n00b onos will die if it charges the marine base alone, but so will anyone: marines know how to defend against an onos: surround it, empty your clips into it and then knife it from behind. Against 3 or 4 intelligent marines + base defences you'd be surprised just how quickly an onos can die. You need to wait until they are nearly dead. Sure, n00bs will be bad at first, but the onos, like all others, is a unique alien, and you will need to practice sometime.

    So, KidC, give a n00b a chance. Let him go on whichever side suits him (or has fewer players), and let him try out everything. Apart from that some good tips in here, but personally as a n00b I would have ignored them because of the rest of your bull****

    I want to thank Kid c for this guide. I am a n00b to NS. Actually, was a n00b. Thanks to this guide and and a few personal revalations, I can now play well as an alien or a marine. I used to just be a bullet sponge so that the rest of my team lives long enough to do some damage but now I can soak up bullets and do damage. <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> Yeah. I also used to be skulk bait, sacrificing myself for the greater good of feeding some skulk so that he could become strong and healthy, and big. Just big enough for my teammates to perforate his hide. Now I can join the perforation. Yeah. <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo-->

    well im glad were having more NS players into our mists. also for the aliens dont just run out into long straight hallways and expect to live. kharra get around by using the hit-and-run tactic so dont be afraid to go back to the hive or dc's to heal

    Absolutely excellent guide - packed full of useful info and very well-written. Clear & easy to undersand. You obviously know your stuff! But I must take issue with that part I quoted from your post. You WON'T start as marine because everyone clamours to play a marine - to such an extent that people keep restarting games until they get to play as marines. This usually leaves us n00bs as aliens or observers.

    Perhaps the most important thing is to read the manual first.

    Thanks for the guide I feel more confident now that I will at least fulfil a role without anguish. Here fishy fishy skulk I mean I'm nice bait. I feel ready to try a game. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> My goodness there is a lot to read. See you in game sometime I hope. I will also make nice marine bait, as the game is team tactics orientated some one has to be bait, but don't expect newbies to always do so, we want to play/learn as well.

    There is no Hazard Course at this moment in time... Oh yes that was useful on only a few things(I play plenty much so I already know a horde of things)
    Hehee... Are you going to make an Advanced guide soon? That would teach a few of those "GodLike" L337's a nice un-forgettable lesson

    Here is a quote from the Natural-Selection FAQ (frequently asked questions).
    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--><b>Every time I try to connect to a NS server, it tells me that I can't because I have to install the custom game. What's wrong?</b>
    This is a common problem, and is due to a last-minute bug sneaking into the installer. The desktop icon that the installer creates doesn't have the working directory set properly. Just delete the desktop icon and run NS from the Start menu instead.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    thanks for the guide.

    what we n00bs need now is a few pointers about how to play gorge/commander.

    oh btw today i played with one of the best Alien teams in my whole, brief NS "career"

    The Marines were entrenched in two positions in that map with the water rain at one point.

    it took only THREE of us to completely annihilate their secondary outpost!

    how?

    by teamwork of course! i was a Lerk and my two mates were Fades, i just kept spraying them with umbra and they kept hammering the poor hominids with acid rockets!

    NS RULEZ!

    HI y'all, I just thought I'd try and share some of my fledgling wisdom with you, on marine tactics, knowing full well most of you will enjoy ripping the p**s out of this post, then telling me 50 different ways I could do things differently, <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> or just making remarks about how amazingly obvious this is. Pre - emptively, in my defence I must point out that I have learned all of this from playing my brother 1 on 1 on LAN (unfortunately my computer doesnt feel like being co - operative in letting me play any net games <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo--> ), so the following have yet to be tested in the school of hard knocks (public servers).

    My most effective tactic so far has been to relocate to the smallest hive on the map, with the least vent entrances (1 on 1, I have to drop an RT to find out which of the hives are unoccupied at the start).
    I pop down RT and CC, run to the base and build them, then drop an IP and armory. After the game I played yesterday, I am sure that the way to go is an observatory and motion tracking. I had previously never bothered with this tech, but now i see the error of my ways. FOr an alien, the worst marine is an alert marine, and my brother no longer has the upper hand without his precious, precious stealth. By this point, Ive probally got scarily low levels of res, so I pop a few mines at the entrance of my base( low down, to try and slow down skulks , more than to kill them, and go a hunting for some res towers. Ill probally stick a couple down closest to my base, build them up, load up with ammo, and unload it all into the nearest alien res tower. This will bring my brother running, ready for a marine flavoured biscuit, but little does he know that i have motion tracking, and that RT was just bait!!! one skulk - shaped smear later, I finnish off his RT, go and find another one, keep anoying the hell out of him till I run out of ammo, and im for it.

    Oh well, back in base, at least my res has built up, now i can drop an arms lab, and start kicking ****. As my weapons and armour grow ever more powerful, i launch assults right into his hives, blowing apart his flimsy chambers with my super - powered shotgun.

    One of my many mistakes in my earliest games was to sit in the marine start, and build as many turrets as i could lay my hands on. These games ended in my turret factory being eaten by a lerk, or my ip being crushed by an onus. In later games, I relocated, but crucially allow the 2nd hive to be taken. This meant that these games ended in my turrets and mines being blown away by acid rockets. FInaly, I can take the initiative, blast my way through an alien base without a need for clean underwear, knock out the hive with that gorgeous shotgun of mine, and watch as my brother squirms in fear (as i'm sure he does).

    Cheers, Crushinator

    The biggest problem with that is the Commander shouldn't be watching only one group. Doing that gives him "tunnel vision" and could cause a breach in defenses. If he's watching and outfitting his "prize" group on a raid into one of the hives, then it's just as easy some of the aliens, usually in the form of Fades and/or Onos can attack a main base, and leave the defenders for the most part with only the LMGs and pistols without any extra ammo, weapons, or defensive structures like turrets and turret factories. I'm sure most of you know without the proper weapons Onos can pretty much run rampant on a poorly defended base.
