I dunno I gotta agree with silencer. If a level is done so it looks realistic I can just make up a story in 5 secounds. Even if its just like "the edge" in quake im to busy blasting a guy with a rail gun to worry about "Why is there a huge staircase without guard rails?"
Doom wasn't even really 3d you couldn't put a room on top of a room. It was just so friggin cool though because all the other games were like mario or something.

What? Slipgate Complex was the best piece of mapping in that whole game!
Really, the installation levels were my favorite ones in the game, and the slipgate complex was the best of them (although it didn't have enforcers, which are the coolest enemies in any game). All the architecture of that level was amazing, and if you play it with Tenebrae... drool...

Esuna: If you think Doom sucks, then you, my friend, are a loon.
speaking of doom: ZDoomGl, it upgrades the engine to a near quake 1 engine(mouse look, jump higher resol.), it also enhances the graphics(mirror effects, 3d models, lens flares etc.)
[QUOTE] RTS: The Fox and the Hound from Red Alert 2. Wow. This is the one where you get 3 Yuris and you have to mind- control the president. This level truly set the standards for option-filled, player-directed playing. (You had at least 4 ways of getting to the president, stealth, brute force, guerilla warfare, ambush, etc!)
I totally agree with you, it was great. I took out the SE prism tower with an elite sniper(yes, it is possible, his range is like one space more than the tower's). It took like 10 minutes of firing but I did it and then a yuri was able to get in range to take the pres.

Your better off going with Jdoom than Zdoom DHP, Zdoom is more of a "modder's paradise" than Jdoom, which is what I like to call an "out of the box rumble" With the added plus that the JD md2 models are way better than the ZDGL ones, Zdoom goes script crazy giving the chance for some truly great levels and mods, while Doomsday looks way better than ZdoomGL and has a kickass control panel to boot.
Speaking of Jdoom... I'm beating Hexen right now and I must say it kicks ****! The level after the Hypostlye is teh pwn! Kickass architecture, with the fight against 10 or so of those creepy mage guys (which are introduced in this level, as are the upgraded shield guys) in almost pitch darkness with only a bunch of pillars to protect you from thier green heat-seeking fireballs of dewm, then once you kill them all, the entire place lights up and you fight 10 more! Not to mention that you get your final weapon on that level. One of, if not THE best single player levels ever made.
P.S: How many of you have actually played the last level of the protoss campaign in broodwar? I'm sure many of you would change your mind about the fox and the hound bieng the best if you were play it.

About slipgate complex: Sure the arcitecture was great, but wheres the gameplay? I can beat that level in less than 2 minutes on nightmare, not what I call challenging, or fun, Quake SP sucked in general anyways.
FPS: Action Half-Life: ahl_banamans - Try playing it with your clan vs another and being the only one left alive with a handcannon and slippers. and 4 shells.
RTS: StarCraft - Last Protoss battle
Action: Enter the Matrix - Post Office
Action RPG: Diablo 2 - I kill cows good with a freezing arrow
Sim: Uhhh...don't play many.
3rd Person: Vice City - 2nd Island. Nothing like owning a chopper. and then getting an attack chopper

For ages i was under the impression that doom was fantastic, then (a few years after stopping playing it) i went back to it and thought "this is +really+ crap" and uninstalled it.
And yes, i've tried all these engine updates and so on, they don't really interest me in the slightest. The game itself is still bad.
And smokenova, I hope you don't mean the last protoss mission of the original Starcraft, after the two frustratingly hard missions before it I was expecting something more, I ended up building 12 battlecruisers and 12 carriers and attacking from opposite sides of the base to see which race would get to the overmind first, the Battlecruisers won, no challenge at all, and definitly not fit for a climax.
FPS - QW: DM3, e1m1 or end. DM3 is probably the best team-based map ever created with DMM1 enabled, e1m1 for its awsome sp replayability and damn nice arcitecture (for its time, of course) and end for, its... well... subniggeath
RTS - SC: Hunters muchomoney, overplayed like hell but imo brings out whats best in SC (the rushes etc etc). Oh, and Red Alert; that map with water all around the outside, the two bridges in the middle, you know... cant remember its name D:

FPS: Wolf3D. Hands. Down. Followed closely by Doom. These were the classics of their day. In modern times, HL wins through though. The Edge was a great multiplayer map, but Quake didnt "feel" right. Unreal was nice, but was lacking in something I could never put my finger on. Unreal 2 Suffers the same problem, only more markedly, I only played it once and dropped it. UT was fun, but thats all. Just fun, not engaging in any manner.
Strategy: This is a tough one. The C&C series as a whole was average. War 1 2 & 3 were great, but not the best, yet they have always caught and grappled my attention. The Best RTS's have been Starcraft - Final Level of the Protoss, Earth 2150 - The movies they presented for new tech and events were stunning, not to mention the weather effects were nice, War III - Just superb, Total Annhilation - One acronym alone describes TA; OMG, Empire Earth - Awesome (and some work was done by Flarya!) Dark Reign 1 & 2 were Superb, Battlezone - The Mars Missions, Haegemonia - The colonisation missions, I just loved those, and the mars vs earth war, that was sweet. Probably more, but I'll be here all day if I list them.
RPG: Only One - Castle Of The Winds; A crappy windows point and click affair, it passed the time, so I cant complain.
There are a bunch of games I've played that I cant categorise, like, Solar Winds by Epic, Major Stryker by Apogee (they went out of business for all you whippersnappers that dont know), Galactix, the original Star Control, hell, there are too many to list when it comes to old games...
Comments
FPS 2k3: Half-Life II, whole game.
