It reduces the quality of the textures and so on, so you get a bit more ugly and blurred gfx..but loads of lovely FPS <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> I went from 30 fps to 60 fps with it..
This shortcut, <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=18&t=8100' target='_blank'>here</a>, gaves tips specific to increasing your FPS.
These will help if your trying to get the best out of a low spec machine. If you've got a high spec machine then look at the thread Paq posted, it's likely your FPS is being held back by the reasons therein.
well that is almost as helpful as saying, you suck.
I'm sure he doesn't want to spend 3 grand on a super gamming computer.
Hes looking for client side easy fixes.
But to compleet what you said...
Have a Good card, nothing from the VooDoo ages
Have at least 128mbs of ram (256 rec)
Have a computer of P3 500 or higher
if you can't reach these min requirements, there is nothing that anyone can do to help you, and don't think your going to play any next generation games (doom 3 or Half Life 2) your computer is too old!
Why do people still have computer with voodoo cards and 64mbs of ram, I wounder? anyone out there running a dinosor computer?
Sorry to pull you up here with a reality check, buy not everyone's got a money tree in the backyard <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

You dont need a lot of money to get a PC that can play most games at a playable frame rate. A GeForce 4 MX only cost around $50-$60 USD, even if you are tight on cash thats not really a lot of money. A GeForce 4 MX can run any game out right now at a playable frame rate with medium to low details. And it will get you over 100FPS with a HL1 engine game.
The main problem would be a good CPU, because you'll need to buy a new mobo and RAM, too. For a mobo, good CPU, and 256Megs of RAM you'll have to spend no less then $250 USD.
Who says you need to upgrade to an uber-"elite" gaming rig? Just get a system that is good enough to run most current games at a playable frame rate at medium or low detail. I'd say that all you would need for that is a Pentium 3 700Mhz, GeForce 4 MX/GeForce 2 Ti, and 256Megs of RAM.
I understand no cash, but there are ways of getting a decent comp for cheap, even if it isnt the uber-comp you dream of.
But, yeah, those other links were great for fps increases, brought mine from the 50-60 range to 100 pretty steady. GL
some people sell ridicously good cards at REALLY low prices in comparison to the market
I use a GForce3 64M vanilla card and have no probs running at 100fps, those are about 100$

I got a Gainward GeForce 3 Ti-200 for $78. Its overclocked to 250 Core & 550 Memory. It was a great deal.
My freind plays HL/NS ALOT on his laptop. Specs: 400mhz, 64mb SDram. Videocard is an ATI rage, with 8mb videoram I think. He gets about 12 fps.
Me? I've tried running it on dinosaurs.. but gave up <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
I'm upgrading soon to an Athlon thoroughbred 2400+ and GeForce 4 Ti 4800 256MB for about £170 plus vat. It should kick HL's butt - maybe now I'll be able to play DOD beach maps :/

Screw you, i get along fine with my p450 and 2x VooDoo2 cards in SLI mode.
well...i say fine... if 10fps at 512x320 res is your thang
Although with this aging system i DO get a free HL wall-hack- i can tell when i'm by an enemy base because my fps drops reeeaaallyy quickly
Ti 4800 256mb? Dude if your going to spend money on a card you should at least get a DX9 spec card (Radeon 9500 Pro), and the extra 128mb wont do you much right now.

Why? No games will use major DX9 features for a long time. Hell, games are just barely starting to use DX8 features.
Why do i have this compared to my better computer?
My "better" computer cant run the old games at all, thats why! i want to be able to play Xcom and Doom, darnit!
seriously though, keep the old one for old games; the games that computer can run. buy a new one. you'd be surprised how cheap even a *fair* computer is today (im talking about 1ghz here, w/o a vid card possibly) and it *can* be less than $1000.

You can get a 1Ghz box with an el cheapo card for under $200 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Also, I'm noticing Nvidia cards are more compatible than ATI cards. In any case, you can't go wrong with the Ti 4800.
-Edit- Just do what I am doing...save up about $150 and buy a GeforceFx 5900 factory direct...beats paying $477 for it.

Eh, I had 1 gig AMD athlon, Geforge2 MX400 64MB, 256 sdram and my average fps was 50 with custom models.
And it was about 60-70 with default models.
I changed graphic card to GeForge4 Ti4200 128Mb and increased the memory to 512 DDR.
Now my average fps is about 20fps better than it was with my old graphic card and memory.
I suggest that you should read <a href='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=18&t=34027' target='_blank'>THIS</a> and you will get better fps. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
If you only get 37 fps with your gf4, then the bottleneck is somewhere else, and the 5900 will be no different.
