Really, they're dumb.
"u need about 6 people on ur team"
"hehe and yea hive lockdown does work and yes it is that too"

Does this sound like you?
Don't worry, in hours- NAY, minutes, you too can be talking like a real human being.
People will treat you like you passed that english class!
Here's a helpful guide to get you started:
u=You
ur= your, or you're, but that's LESSON TWO
put spaces between words, and use punctuation.

Now I understand saying "inc. skulk" instead of "excuse me, old friend, but i do believe there is a skulk bearing down upon the base.", but when you're on the forum, nobody is attacking you. Please take more time in your posts, and most people will spend more time reading them.

    I showed Apostrophe's mother to these forums, and she was horrified at how people have abused her child.

    Yah, another thing...sentences and proper nouns start with capital letters. Like this...I am Sirus.
    In addition, when the letter "I" is alone, you need to capitalize it. The shift key is your friend.

    Also, if you're trying to make a point, please use proper english with punctuation skills. No one wants to listen to you when you talk like this.

    "see ur wrong if u do this and go that way then i can get over there faster than u. ur also wrong the lmg doesnt do 12 dmg it does 16 dmg ur wrong."

    Blegh !!!!

    Can I just add: if you don't know how to use the apostrophe, or aren't sure, do not use it. It looks worse to have an apostrophe where it doesn't belong than to lack one where it does.

    It seems that it's Australians who are mostly guilty of this (I've got a place around the corner from my house called "Choice's Food Court". I have yet to meet this "Choice" person).

    Here's a quick rundown.

    Where NOT TO use apostrophes:
    1: Plurals
    The plural of gorge is gorges. The plural of turret is turrets. NOT gorge's, gorges', turret's, and ABSOLUTELY NOT turrents

    2: Possession for certain special words
    him = his
    her = hers
    it = its

    Where TO use apostrophes:
    1: Contractions
    eg "it's" instead of "it is".

    2: Posession
    This post is written by Skorpy; it is Skorpy's post.

    Note: Skorpy's can mean "belonging to Skorpy" OR "Skorpy is".

    3: Possession plural
    eg, the res belonging to more than one gorge is the gorges' res. The apostrophe comes after the s if you're referring to something belonging to a plural.

    I was recently laughed at for my sig which contained the word "it's" meaning belonging to it. Was this in fact wrong as I was convinced into, or is there supposed be an apostrophe in it's when you mean somethihng belonging to "it"?

    The above is correct. It is a little known fact that "its" is the possessive form of "it". "It's" is a contraction for "it is".

    Add some of the offending items to the swear filter. For example, you could replace "u" with "you (and by the way did you know that I'm an idiot?)"

    I'm fine with a bit of short hand, as was stated above... i.e. "inc hive", instead of "there are 3 skulks a fade and a lerk approaching our hive, they will be here any second." I'm also ok with having a laugh a joke and saying stuff like "rox0r" "pwn!" "tbh" or "w00t!". What bothers me is bad use of the english language and lack of grammar and the fact that people don't know when its use is inappropriate.

    it's = it is
    its = belongs to it

    My experience is that the ones who use the worst language has it as their first (or only) language. Maybe us who has it as a second language are more anxious to be interpreted correctly.

    It just makes sense to use as good language as possible when communicating, unless you are in a real hurry (skulks are charging you). Speaking like in the above examples is like showing up at a party in a sweatsuit without showering and with food all over your face, you may be a great person and have some good ideas but people are going to think less of you anyway.

    With regards to the apostrophe I've found that thinking that the ' replaces a letter makes it easier to use. You're = you are, the ' replaces the a. Isn't = is not, the ' replaces the o.

    And yes, I am prejudiced enough not to take someone seriously if they can't use proper language, at least not until I get to know them. First impressions tend to last a while.

    This is a very serious irritation to a great deal of us. And i feel the point we're trying to get across is that we can't understand people.

    I can live with spelling mistakes, grammer all over the place etc, as long as it's still readable. What gets right up my nose is no paragraphs, as it then becomes really difficult to read.
  • Young_TrotskyYoung_Trotsky Join Date: 2003-01-14 Member: 12285Members
    I fully agree with the spelling filter idea. It would be great if it auto-replace i with I, u with you, ur with your, ure with you're, etc.

    You'd think so, wouldn't you? It makes sense (you add an apostrophe for possession to "it" to get "it's"). I did that for ages. But it's technically wrong. It's not really a laughable mistake though (such as a birthday card saying "Sister's forever", or the aforementioned Choice's Food Court).

    Two points.

    1] If you're going to correct someone on their literacy, at least have the decency to make a coherant and literate critique.

    To me, "ur" has three meanings. The first being "you are", not "your" since the letters "u" (you) and "r" (are) together make "ur" (you are), by logic at least.

    The second meaning being an the ancient city of Ur, somewhere near Egypt, has the Ziggurat of Ur, and so on. Google for it.

    The third meaning is far more simple. It means "I am an astoundingly lazy, illiterate and unintelligent.".

    People have spent millenia creating the English language, stop breaking it!
