Obviously we need official word on whether or not strafing was intentionally "nerfed" or not, seeing as that makes all the difference between fixing a bug and taking advantage of one...

Frogg, if you walk at full speed do you still make no footstep sounds?

yes you still make footstep sounds, the way walk works is if you travel below a certain speed you make no noise, it doesn't automatically silence your footsteps.

what's strafing got to do with bunny hopping? (which is still possible btw)

uhh everything

and strafing is only borked if you use the default 2.0 config.

Welp, I personally would like to get my diagonal strafing back to normal. You say add that line to autoexec.cfg. Which autoexec.cfg file?
There seems to be none in my half life folders or NS, should one be made? Elaborate plz, thx

Make one in your NS folder.

Ya first thing I noticed when I played 2.0 is the strafe reduction, and I really dislike it. Thanks for the fix, I hope it's not supposed to be like the default 400.

like the guy above me said, everything. You can't bhop as marine anymore, unless something happened that I am unaware of.

Sorry for my delayed posting, I was away all day. I seriously doubt it's an exploit. If strafing was meant to change like that, it would have been hardcoded in to the game. You guys treat Flayra like he knows nothing and needs his hand held through everything. He's changed movement stuff before, so he EVIDENTLY knows the movement cvars. I was presenting a simple fix. I had no idea that it slows down some classes, by the way. I'll edit my original post with the better fix. (Autoexec.) I doubt that Flayra would have nerfed strafing anyway, since he left bunnyhopping in, and because being able to strafe around your enemies to hurt them is a valuable skill.

Okay, there is definately a difference, I made a demo showing cl_sidespeed 400 and 1000 (400 is first, I changed it by binding it to a key)

Can I say thank you for fixing my NS 2.0. I think there is a real difference when you make the client speed variables consistant to 1000 (which I now think doesn't require an Autoexec.cfg line).
• SecretFireSecretFire Join Date: 2003-01-02 Member: 11712Members
So, was this just an oversight in the config files, or was strafing supposed to be nerfed? Because there is definately a difference.

This is not an exploit (unless Flayra corrects me).

Frogg is correct - setting these values to 9999 will make you "walk" as fast as you run. However, this is NOT exploitive because whether you make sound or not is tied to your actual speed, not whether you are "walking" or not. So if you "walk" as fast as you run, you will make nice loud footsteps.

Set these values to 1000.

Just to clear things up in case they... need.... to be... cleared?

I wasn't suggesting to set the speeds to 9999, I was merely trying to make a point by putting an abnormally large value yet showing that it wasn't an exploit (trying to educate the people going OMG H4X everytime they see "console" or "cvar" or "script".) In my post explaining how to fix the problem, I use the appropriate value of 1000.

Hooray! Now my time-honored trick of constantly biting the back of marine ankles shall rise again!
• wlibaerswlibaers Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8685Members
If you do this, will it reduce the movement speed of aliens? Or is 1000 a high enough value that even a leaping skulk with celerity will still get full speed?

Okay...
So

What are the values you want to use for everything to have 1.04 side-straffing? Only one person post it!

what forrester was trying to say ( i may be wrong here) is that when some people first installed 2.0 ( myself included) it was impossible to walk strafe at normal speed , it would do it veeeeeeeeeeery slowly , he was just posting a fix so you could walk normally ( allthough it did fix it when i reinstalled ns)

cl_xxspeeds are not exploits. It is impossible to use them to do something you can't normally do. As coil has said, the very best you will ever achieive is ordinary walking speeds, and even then you'll make a hell of a lot of noise.

There is no logical reason to have these set at different values to each other...

Will there be any client updates before 3.0? Little things like this could easily be fixed in version 2.10, and then the first server update would be 2.11...
