Third Person

My dad's a jerk
I like Natural Selection. But my dad thinks it's mindless stradegy-less shooting, no matter how many times i tell him it's not. Now he wont let me play natural selection or any fps again. After awhile, I discovered that my dad only hates natural selection cause its an fps. To him, fps automatically registers 'violent shooting with blood and gore' into his mind. I remember during gameplay once that there was a console command to let you play third person. Does anybody know what it is?

try and show him the commander mode, startup a lan-game and add some bots.

I told him about commander mode. I told him everything good about NS, I try to show him, but it's an FPS, and to my dad, all FPSes are composed of violence and gore. I try to show him, but he 'doesnt want to watch me try to show him gore isnt gore.'

yer screwed. Play SC instead and watch 400 zerglings die to firebats. Or if you're sadistic, set up a SC map where you have a 9999 hp bunker, and thousands of 1 hp 1 dmg zerglings start attacking you. mmmm, blood.

Thats so unlucky mate, your missing out lots. I never understand people who censore video games. I remeber when they banned the light gun for the dreamcast because they thought it engouraged kids to use guns, it was just stupid. I play NS and dont feel the need to go around eating people . Try telling ur dad that sheltering u from violence is more likely to be damaging, and letting you release aggressive emotions in a video game enviroment is beneficial.

    Lets play a mindless game:

Join a public and try to find something like "marine stratrgy".

Its an FPS right now on most publics.
Now make use of the 2nd attatchment, buy some guns to kill your father and tell the cops you thought it was an intruder.

it's so true... people who are forbidden from playing video games are forced to take out their aggressions elsewhere, and get into much more destructive "hobbies." parents should be glad their kids have a reason to stay home rather than going out on the street. In japan, video game playing per capita is like 10x what it is here, censorship is about 1/10th what it is here, and real life violence is about 1/100th... tell your dad to watch Bowling for Columbine.

It's very much possible in 2.0, just as it was very much possible in 1.0x. No developer mode or sv_cheats required. However, I'm not going to explain how it's done because it's also very much an exploit.

(however, it's stunningly useful to modellers who want to test their work)

This game is much of an FPS but it is much less of an FPS than say counter strike, regular half-life multiplayer (can you say gauss gun slaughter fest?), science and industry or the specialists even when played on pubs. Personally I see nothing wrong with even mindless video violence like the specialists, it's very relaxing and fun for short periods at a time.

BTW... my mom is 53 and plays TS occasionally(for some inexplicable, abhorrid reason which she will not state she doesn't like NS ), you don't have to grow up just because you get older, that's optional .

I distinctly remember telling my parents that I wanted to be a phycisist, that I would eat sweets almost daily when I 'grew up', that I wanted to do some pyrotechnics as a hobby as well as lots of other stuff in no particular order. I've done most of the stuff that was feasible(being a physisict and game programmer and astronomer etc.. all at once is not feasible for one thing. I'm studying physics now but I could have gone either way)

As far as pyrotechnics is concerned what I'm legally allowed to do is quite restricting, there is a limit to what you get to store in a locker in a garage as well as when and where you can use it. But I try to do some stuff at least every new years eve now(last year I welded random stuff with lots and lots of thermite(yes I was wearing 100% UV protective sun glasses, I don't want to get 'snow blind' or anything), before that I burned 2 kgs of ready made yellow smoke mixture(weeeeeee )). Before that, when I couldn't buy stuff(age thing...) or had any experience with electrical ignition I bought 2000 sparklers(cheap super-market sparklers, boy did the person working at the register give me a strange look) and strung them togheter in small bundles of a hundred or so and then bundled those into a single big bundle. One sparkler isn't very impressive, however 2000 looks like a soft semi-molten pile of metall(I don't think it really melts, just gets very soft and bends that way.) with a 2 meter greenish, directed flame and sparks flying everywhere, all that big pile burns out in about 10 seconds . (stringing togheter 2000 sparklers might not be all togheter legal but there's lots of snow around on new years eve here...)

I can't remember the last whole day I went without any sweets(candy, cookies, candied ginger, soda pops or such)...

Ranting aside, by the time HL2 is out and if NS gets ported/remade to/for it you will hopefully be old enough so you get to decide what to do, stupid or not...

If it is simply blood your dad is opposed to you should be able to turn it off. If it is the cartoonish video violence with aliens then I don't think it can be helped at all.

What's up with all these unrelaxed fathers? Do they ever ease off your little NS back. I for one know my mother doesn't, oh no sir!

Although your father is correct, FPS usually limits thoughts to brain, such as this.

[ FPS = Gore, gore, uhh, gore. ]

In this aspect he is right, but did you ever go..

"Hey dad, please bequiet, I want to show you this"

Now, if your father REFUSES to listen, my advice to you is get lawyer buddy, and sue him for, let's say, not letting you play NS-.. I'm sure it would go over quite smoothly, don't the rest of you? But on a serious note, if he ACTUALLY decides to listen to you. Show him some competitive Counter-Strike, Natural-Selection, and Day of Defeat demos. But on the Natural-Selection side, competitive, or public, would do the job! Explain to him that you must work as a team to obtain victory. Nothing more, nothing less. If you're dad doesn't listen to you though. I'm sorry man, your dad is an arrogant man. All fathers should listen to their sons. Try to explain to him, that if you wern't playing Natural-Selection, you'd be out on the streets doing heroine, and crack, stealing cars. Eventually, he'll take no more of it, and let you move onto to gaming. You heard it here, and nowhere else.

In reality, there actually IS a very not-well-known console command that can be used to give you thirdperson view....although it IS considered an exploit....so I shall not post it here.

Edit: I feel you pain. My dad is such an asshat when it comes to games of ANY kind. He thinks I should spend my time 'expanding my mind' or something like that. Why bother.....when all the reference books I have in my house are 20 years out of date? He thinks this game is the 'exact same setup over and over again' but in reality it varies greatly.

Of course...I still play it lots cuz my dad works late

It has the same effect on the HUD as r_drawviewmodel does. So many useful things (energy bars, hives, health circles, hive sight, MT, etc) aren't drawn.

Naraku, you are very unlucky, but maybe there is hope for you. Your father is probably a hypocrite, and maybe this can be used against him.

    1)How old are you?
2)Is your father a big gun control fan?
3)Is your father interested in targetshooting or hunting?
4)Does he own a gun for self defense?
    5)Is your father religious?
    6) If so, what religion and how devoted is he to it?
7)Does your father like to watch violent action movies?
8)What is your father's stance on anti-american terrorists, and the war on Iraq, and the US war in Afghanistan.
(this one might be very important )
9)What computer/video games does your father like/think is ok.

I work for many LAN party gruops. I help with the events and so on. Ive met MANY people like this guys father.

Theres the questionable ones that just want to know why you play a game where you kill some one. All they need is some clue to know that we know its not real. And that its just fun to play a game even if the winner dose kill there opponent in a virtual setting ( not real ) . Theres more people like this then this kids father.

The thick headed ones think it is real and thay wont let any one play because they dont want others to do that for real. This borders on the line of idiotic and imbisilic. They more or less need to be forced to see that its just propoganda that is fulling there hate. If thay could bring them selfs to playing the game or even seeing how not real it is; That would change there mind. But most people that are this thick headed to hate something just because its an FPS are doomed to be a puppet to the media and follow what the news says not what realy is going on. ( yes the news is only about 40% right thats why we have over 3000 places to get news to find out whats real and whats editors properganda crap )

What your dad should do insted of watching what you do and saying thats bad or sinfull or what have you. He could spend his time with you doing things and so on that you want to do and could be helpful. If this was my kid or my dad I would want to get a 2nd pc and DSL so we could play together. That would be much better than having a father that is just a thick headed propaganda following sheep.

( yes I cant spell deal with it )

Yah, or at least just spend 30 minutes sitting with you while you play NS(to get a better idea of what it's about). Aren't parents susposed to watch their children play video games, instead of bitching about what they don't know anything about?

QUOTE

I dunno how much of the movie was the honest truth, but it was no more propaganda than everything on FOX news every night. True. Yah dissenting views are good, and I am the type of person to be attracted to some dissenting views, but I personally feel im wasting my time if a dissenting view can't be backed up for real. And that's right, such websites could be lying. But with practice it becomes easier to examine two sides, and see through one of them. But maybe I'm still wrong. The best way though, is to listen to the facts, then see if they check out.

Still, this thread shouldn't turn into anything political, gotta see if we can help Naraku with his out of control facist father.

My advice to you: Save up all your money. When you turn 18, move out, and never look back.

You're living under a fascist regime, and odds are low you will be able to improve things while you live there. The way to freedom is out the front door.

(my quality of life went up 4x when I moved out of my parents' house, and they weren't nearly as fascist as your dad sounds.)

But as you grow older, it's far more likely you'll slowly start to gain more freedoms. Moving out when your 18 is possible, but it's not easy. It would really help though if your age is currently 8-12. This would mean that you have alot more hope for the future. Parents are quite protective of pre-teens, which is justified, but only so much.

Well i gotta admit my dad does take interest in ns and what the latest strat and forum rant is on about, we have good discussions on it.

He cant play it tho as he finds anything above quake 3 and UT2k3 are too involved and complicated.

Its fun playing with him as he gets so carried away when anything dies becoz of him. Im finally getting him to use strafing and jumping. Im 18 and he's 46 so we have a few drinks as well which makes things alot better. Its funny when we team up against stupid bots and go impact hammering.

My dad has just about had a pc all his life and was playing wolfenstein and doom original when they first came out, i used to watch him play all the time till i got older and played myself.
