what with the new shotgun rof, i decided to have a go at modelling, and did an original auto shotty.

however, this is my first model so i am kind of at a loss as to what to do now... i want to remove some bits from the model i have atm, but i don't know how.

can anyone help me out?

just finishing off a little detail not present in the first two pics... this is the catch for releasing the magazine.

As a matter of fact, I can. I fail to see how this helps me, however.

This was just something I fancied doing off my own back because I don't like the current shotgun and I wanted to turn my hand to modelling. Does anyone have any advice that, well, could actually be considered advice, instead of pointless muttering?

You could add a little more detail and lose some of the "squareness" by bevelling the edges. I don't think Milkshape has a bevel function as such, but you can get more or less the same effect by selecting faces, then extrude and scale them...

QUOTE

"i want to remove some bits from the model i have atm, but i don't know how."

If you mean cutting holes in it etc, you're right out of luck as Milkshape doesn't support boolean functions. There is a workaround of sorts though. If I recall BurnCycle wrote a tutorial, should be around here somewhere.

Handgrip looks a bit too wide to be held properly, but that wont really be visible, so you could just leave that I s'pose.

try polycount gimpeh. Should have some stuff to help you on your quest for modelling there.

Yeah Crouching, I have this problem. It's called Milkshape!

I think a mate of mine has Maya which I could play around with, but I just want to get a handle on the basics. I was planning on cutting a hole in the stock though.

Be warned, while Maya is a pro level program, for many people, this is not as much of a good thing as you might expect.

You can expect to find yourself in "Obscure rendering option I will never need for any low poly work" hell..

Milkshape does the essential basics, but without all that unneeded complexity.

( Don't get me wrong, Maya is about 400 million times more powerful, it's just you'll never need most of the functions for basic HL modelling , and since you're a bit new, you might want to learn the basic skills within a simpler interface first. )

i just dont see the point how you could hold that gun confortable

never forget the ergonomics my friend...

Yeah Crouching, I'm giving MS3D the benefit of the doubt for the moment.

Oh and Sheena, it's held much in the same manner as any full stock shotgun is held at the moment, against your shoulder.

Trying a new approach. Basically, two cylinders cut in half, with a box in the middle. Crikey, I feel like I'm on Blue Peter. Anyway, any thoughts on the new (and improved?) version?
  • CrouchingHamsterCrouchingHamster Join Date: 2002-08-17 Member: 1181Members
    Better, I say.

btw, if you post flatshaded renders, it'll give people a better idea of where the polys are..

those cylinders look as if they were at least 12 sided, that's too much for barrels

i bet youre so amazed about your creation you havent realized yet that it is nearly impossible to hold that gun...

take a closer look at your grip..and the location of your magazine.. isnt there something missing?

yeah...space for your hand... your wrist have to bend over 50 degrees or more to reach the grip, because the magazine is behind it... depending how you have to bend your hand around the magazine theres almost not enough space for your thumb..

ok.. there are 3 ways now...

    chose wisely

Quick update: Everything is a lot more cylindrical now, being as I used cylinders! Still not entirely sure how I am going to do the trigger and I'm not sure the stock will make a reappearance.
