<div class="IPBDescription">starting to get more that annoying...</div> Hi
specs
running HL GOTY with 1.1.1.0 (the newest) version with ns 2.0.
hardware etc.
amd 900
512 SDRAM
Asus Geforce 2 GTS 32 ddr
80/20/30Gb harddrives
windows 2000
NO EAX
OPENGL in 1024x768
SB LIVE!
DSL 512
MS keyboard and MS optical wheel mouse
Problem is that while playing , sometimes ( it seems a random ) my mouse and keyboard gets "locked up" / slows down drasticly. i mean that i can move and all that and ping is ok ( steady 50 ) fps is ok (above 25 or so in heavy battles...) but the movement is delayd about one second (i.e. i press move left it takes one sec. to actually move on screen).
i think its something to do with my keyboard or something... once i just started "spam" my keyboard (when the "lock up" happened) by hitting keys and it seemed to make it even worse ( took some time to get back to normal). it takes usually 10 seconds or so.. once i had it like ½ min and then it got normal again.
ive tryed everything i can think off ( read some forum threads), changing options, etc. but nothing has worked...
also i tryed full uninstall/ reinstall but it didnt do anything...
i didnt have any problems with 1.04 version, but in NS 2.0 seems to give this random oddness regulary.
any ideas ? im all ears for suggestions <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
i havent countered this type of behavior before so im pretty much "WTH" at the moment(after kicking it for a day or so).

Hope it helps
We have had several players here in the past with frayed or shorted periphs that experienced your problems until they tried an alternate set, and knew then to head off to the store.
Worst off, for me it even affects team chat, regular chat, typing commands into the console, etc. You'll be typing, and you'll feel like you're on the word processor of a 486; you've been typing a whole line out, and when you're done, the computer will <i>finally</i> burst it all onscreen.
I've narrowed the problem down this far: it only seems to happen when I join a game with an external server browser (I've been using HLSW). After setting HLSW to close itself upon connecting to a server, I tried it out, and the same drunken controls problem seems to happen. I've noticed one difference between using an external browser and not, however, and for this I have to thank my 2-monitor setup: when I use an external browser to join, a little bit of my taskbar (just the clock and a few icons worth of the tray) run off onto the second screen. When I enter NS through any of its shortcuts, this doesn't happen, and neither will the "drunken controls" problem.
Therefore my assumption so far is that the problem is somehow related to the switching of resolutions. If you find any more evidence of this, hopefully we can both have this problem fixed.
Anyone else in this thread using dual monitors?
But yah, the other thing I was thinking about was the posibility that your input devices were running through another program (any thing that might capture keys and pass them on instantly normaly but some times might mess up)
ill try with another set of keyboard/mouse and see if it helps...
ive turned off all unnessary services, programs etc. but nothing seems to help.
im gonna do some tests today to see if can fix it. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

What's happening with me though is that while moving my mouse and using +moveleft/right it'll get stuck in strafe mode. (I don't have +strafe bound -ANYWHERE-) Also, it's also gotten stuck while firing etc.
Any ideas here? This wasn't going on in 1.0 or in any other mods. Just NS =/
Thanks ^^
what ive seen, if i keep ICQ or anything on the background (this wasnt an issue when i played v1.x) the game tends to get more of these "lockups". even thou these programs virtually takes no resources they still seem to cause NS to make these odd slowdowns. no other game does that so i dont really understand...
im just getting used to it, it has cost sometimes my Onos to drop dead in fights cos i cant move... which pisses me off a lot.

Just wanted to add my two cents, since I am suffering from the same symptoms as has been described here.
First of all, I've been playing DoD for quiet some time now, and all has been running smoothly and nice - specs on my computer is:
Athlon 2000XP
GeForce4
DSL 1024/256
Win2K
Full HL & latest updates.
All has been going dandy with DoD and often I'm one of the best 'pingers' on the DoD servers - lucky me you say, eh?
However, all this has stopped since I tried to install NS2.0 two days ago.
After having installe NS2.0 I tried to enter several servers, with the same result: CL_FlushEntityPacket errors and a ping looping between 400 and 3700. In other words, it didnt work. I tried to fiddle around with rate, cmdrate, updaterate, etc. but to no avail. Nothing helped on my insane ping/latency.
After having tried it for a whole day and getting really frustrated with it, I decided to quit NS2.0 (without ever trying it for real, which is a shame) and go back to playing DoD...
... which was when the horror struck me right in the face: All my movements (controls) seemed to be buffered and slow - somehow the longer I held down any key, the more drunken my avatar seemed to be.
Panicking I tried to uninstall NS2.0 and reinstall DoD1.0 on top of the old install - still the same. Oh well, I thought, I'll just reinstall Halflife and DoD, and everything will be fine. I uninstalled and _NUKED_ my halflife dir and reinstalled Half life + DoD from scratch.
Now here's the really creepy part: Although the dir was nuked, and HalfLife was installed as fresh as can be, I still had drunken (buffered) controls!!!!
I guess, this can only be if the installer for NS2.0 somehow fiddles with important files outside the Halflife directory - else I have no explanation.
I too am getting **** - currently I can't play DoD apparently because I've been so stupid to once having installing NS2.0 (which I've heard is a really good game).
My only options are to find the error as soon as possible (my gaming addiction won't let me rest for long, though), or simply do a complete reinstall of my Win2K which really really really suxxor
I do admit there's a really really slight possiblity that this is caused by my ISP, but I really really doubt it since a) I've never had problems with my ISP, b) this has been going on for days, c) my UT2K3 is fine, d) this happened _exactly_ when I installed NS2.0. Furthermore, scanning for similar topics it seems that more people than me has had similar problems.
Something seems to be really screwy in Natural Selection land and I'm the victim of this it seems
Any suggestions as to what can be done would be appreciated - if all else fails I would just like to have things as they were before I installed this infernal mod
Peace Y'all!
Try disabling any program specific buttons, in the mouse control panel uncheck the box that says Use program specific mouse buttons
My specs: My intellimouse explorer 3.0 USB works fine w/ usb connection
Win XP Home
Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 USB
> Driver date: 4/11/2002
> Driver version: 4.10.851.0
Dell keyboard (no special buttons or anything)
All the XP updates, as of 2 days ago
No control lag.
I did have lag with program specific buttons enabled
BTW, I run NS 2.0 on my primary of two monitors on a 9800 pro.

In response to my previous post in this thread, where I described how NS2.0 has fubared my computer and made me a drunken DoD player...
... well, I just reinstalled Windows2K - you know, format partition reinstall all vital programs and the works.
And of course reinstalled Half-Life + DoD.
Guess what? Now _everything_ works as it did before in DoD, and I'm a happy camper - although I did had to spend an entire evening reinstalling my system. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
Dunno if this really can be deemed _a fix_, since reinstalling the OS seems a bit drastic, but hey it worked for me! <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->
Anyhow, this proves to me that this wasnt my ISP (in case someone wanted to blame my ISP) and that with 99.99% certainty NS2.0 has some dorment evil code in amongst it's program that somehow rears it's ugly head on a few machines and really F.U.C.K.s it up. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Good Luck with getting un-drunken you guys <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
/Placebo
PS. In case youre wondering: No, although I've heard NS is quite the game, this will _NEVER_ be installed on my system again. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
This seems to be a problem with Win2k + MS Intellimouse
I suggest getting the latest intellimouse drivers from the MS website
Or reinstalling another OS like XP
Or get another mouse, a normal generic mouse
Now have edited my previous post to the correct Win2K - sorry about that.
>This seems to be a problem with Win2k + MS Intellimouse
Personally I have Win2K & Logitech mouse.
About trying XP, new mice, etc. are all good suggestions - however, I have looked at these forums and although I wouldnt call it quite a few then perhaps a handful of people have reported 'drunken style natural selection/half life' after having installed NS2.0.
I'm pretty sure (although not 100%) that some of the posts I've read also was happening on XP systems. Also, I seem to recall people using microsoft mice having the problem, whereas I have a logitech.
Being the programmer I am, it would be nice to find the common denominator - however, the task of reinstalling my OS is just too big a deal to even think about trying to debug my situation and why it happens to me.
I still must stress the horrific fact that even after I nuked my half life and reinstalled it again, the drunken style controls were still there. I dunno if this is only on my machine this could happen, but somehow NS went beyond the half life dir and messed something else up. A drunken control style insertion in the registry perhaps?
Peace Y'all
Do you use internet exploder? (IE) (to browse all your sites
Have you run a virus scan?
Have you run a scan for virus/adware?
Adaware & SpyBot S&D should both be run, yes both!
anyone know if this could be windows services releated problem?
im totally out of ideas here <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

To change your target line, simply right click on the NS shortcut and click properties. Then just add -noforcemparms to the target line. So it should read something similar to this:
D:\Sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe -game ns -noforcemparms
Hope it helps, might not but its worth a shot if it sorted my problem out. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
But as far i have noticed, if i have any extra programs running in background the effect happens more frequently. when i shut down all the unnessary programs i.e. Mirc , ICQ etc. that are running on the background the slow downs/lockups happen less frequently...
Which is really weird, cos ive been always running the same programs even with NS 1.04 without problems but only 2.0 gives me these lockups... and no other multiplayer game that i play does this
its a bit annoying but really dont have much choice <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
PS. Anyone remember that how to run the game with high priority (CPU) ? i remember seeing something about this somewhere...
Cheers

I had this problem with a MS intellikeyboard or something (strafed mouse lock up issues) and it seemed to be fixed by enabling usb keyboard (even though I have PS/2 k/b and USB logi mx)
if that were the case, i wouldn't be having the same exact probs on winXP w/ a logitech. same prob with laggy mouse movements at random ever since i installed 2.0. now none of my HL mods are playable at all.

i built everything back took me hours of wasted ns time so i was quite happy to boot up and as like you guys suddenly i had drunken controls. now the only thing that i can think is different from my old build from yesterday is :
1. i didnt install the damn microsoft intellipoint ad leyboard drivers last time xp just put some generic stuff on which worked perfect.
2. i originally had version 1 of ns on and installed ns 2 over the top im going to go try these both now and see what happens
quick question though i noticed someoen else has the radeon 9800 (as do i)
so this may be the cause in some straneg way so what graphics cards are you guys using ?
who cares for the drivers anyway as long as i can play ns <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
edit ps i run xp i use ase im usin intelliexplorer usb optical mouse and im normally on mirc this jsut has been happenin the past few days... so should i uninstall the intelli point drivers?
Have you downloaded ANYTHING?
Have you patched your system against blaster?
Do you use IE, and have downloaded anything that adds-on to the browser?
Have you run a virus / spyware scan?
I dont really understand what is the problem..
Has anyone had this HLSW problem and fixed it?
cheers
