Limbs?

Joe my leg, my third leg!
Will there be a limb loss system? Like you need to upgrade armor that can protect joints and your legs and arms from getting ripped off, and for aliens there could be a regeneration system that takes like 10 seconds to regenerate. I wouldn't mind seeing a group of marines all shooting rapidly at a level 5, but one is only hitting his leg repeatively until it flings off, then everybody goes in to finish it off .

If I think back I believe I can remember a limb loss threat, though maybe not, but if there was it was shot down.

I honestly don't see a realistic posibility of anything like that ever making it into NS. But hey, what do I know?

They are trying to keep the game pretty tame, as to have a bigger audience.

Arms and legs ripping off is REALLY too violent for NS.

I think it's also not technically possible in the Half-Life engine. But what do I know, I'm just a writer.

No, no, no, no!

Makes the models more complicated, requires you to balance it so it doesn't make ppl made from it happening too often, and only makes sense if you have hit boxes, which the marines don't.

Seeing limps flying off every were in a huge fight....would seem a little...INTENSE.

Can imagine a 12 yr old kid infrount of his pc going...mum check this out...its cool....(kid blowing off an leg and arms).

Next thing u know....NS team is getting e-mails from angry perants about how there kids are at school pretending to shoot the teachers legs and arms off....

Might seen like a very cool idea for limps being blown off and arms being torn off....but might shorten the audience range...

Its not a bad idea but it would take alot of extra modeling in order to do it. Also the NS team doesn't want Ns to be to violent.

Crimson..calm down, the idea is silly. Seriously. If you got 3 guys with assault rifles shooting the hell out of an elephants leg the leg wouldn't just fly off. I know they aren't shooting for realism but there's a cutoff point to that. You're being silly, yo.

I don't think anything more needs to be said here. Limb loss is
1) too violent for NS, and
2) too difficult to implement, as each scenario requires a different model. You've got 5 limbs to lose (including your head) - each can either be on or off, obviously - two states per limb.
That's 2x2x2x2x2 = 2^5 = 32 different combinations of limb loss PER player... 1 marine + 5 aliens = 6 x 32 possible combinations = 192 models to make, skin, and animate! Not to mention the separate extremities - at 5 per model, that's another 30 pieces.

So, no. (:

They will NOT implement any loss of limb system because they want to keep NS PG-13. Also, too much violence may not be suitable for other cultures and such so they want to keep the user range as wide as they possibly can.

If you want loss of limbs, go play some SOF and get your bloodlust settled.
• DekkerDekker Join Date: 2002-07-06 Member: 887Members
hmm, i think you saw that from desert crisis, which had an engine for that, i think it was called guhl engine and it took them about 1 and a half year to be done completly with the coding and modeling (which still wasn´t over completly)
• Rico1Rico1 NS Oldtimer Join Date: 2002-05-24 Member: 664Members
Nope its called the "ghoul" engine and its copyrighted by SOF or so i believe. DC just did a cheap (but good considering the HL engine limits) imitation of it.

I dont know what DC calls it, but i sure hope its not ghul

DC's vgui system had nothing to do with their limb severment.

the way its done in dc, each limb is a seperate SUBMODEL (not an acutal seperate mdl file) except for the head, which is seperate (due to facial customization features, not the detatchment from the neck :P)

really not that complex, but just one more step of complexity for both the coders and the modellers. Also takes up more system resources.

but as its already been said, NS is going for a PG-13 feel, so limb detatchment is a big nono.

I don't see the loss of limbs benefitting the game. I've played through quite a bit of Soldier of Fortune II, and trust me, it gets old pretty quickly anyway.

Useless. Pointless. Gives NS a bad rep. Easy as pie.

... damn, I wish I had some pie right now. *grumble*

limb loss is a nice idea, yeah, but with the vibes im getting about the way the developers want the mod to go it really should be kept out. as doom said, it isn't as complicated as one might think, but it is not an easy thing to do by any means. oh, btw HI DOOM!!!

If Natural Selection is a mod for Half-Life, a Mature game, then why are they bothering to tone down the violence in NS?

Well actually, that sounds like a good idea... you could get more retail probability that way.

Basically this mod would have the same amount of violence as Half-life well I think.

maybe the spike from that monster acan knock marine limbs off so they cant run away or so all the aliens can come in and feast on him..

yum yum

Honestly... how violent was Half-Life? Not near as violent as it could have been. Not once did Gordon (friggin&#33 Freeman ever blow off a zombie's leg. The NS team has always expressed their desire to keep this game at an acceptable level for children everywhere to play. Just because YOU are ok with violence and mature themes, doesn't mean that everyone that plays half-life everywhere shares in your belief. If I had a young child, I would let them play Half-Life for countless more hours than I would let them play something along the lines of Soldier of Fortune. Just my .02

Flay is trying to make this game avaliable to as many people as possible. HE is trying to make it work in software mode, so everyone can play it. He is making sure it plays just as good on 56K as a cable modem, and he is making sure the content can appeal to every player out there. People who like violence will still play even if the violence is minimal, but a person who dislikes excessive violence WON'T play if it is too violent. Making it less gorey and such helps to the letting more people play.

Things do not require gore to scare the pants of you. In fact most of the scariest moments in alot of games have no gore at all.

In general i'm okay with dismemberment. It was quite a laugh in SOF. However I really don't think it's the kind of thing that fits Flayra's vision of what NS should be, and he has total creatve control over NS.

HL had it's gory momments:
1. Dead scientists lying around.
2. Scientists with headcrabs chewing their heads off
3. Scientists with headcrabs where their head should be (zombies)
4. Bloodstained walls
5. Scientists & security gaurds being pulled screaming into vents and being gibbed
6. Various aliens feeding on dead scientists

Flayra won't let us do any of this stuff because he thinks its too gory for his target audience. He even took out performance enhancing drugs out because they project the wrong image.

A number of senior forum members and playtesters have said dismemberment wont't be in NS, so stop flogging the dead horse.

True, I wouldn't let children play HL. I know it would have given me nightmares as a kid.

It's a smart decision to keep these scary or disgusting things out of NS. So we all can play it even when it's dark outside.

But removing stim packs for political reasons... doesn't that go a bit too far?

Ok, so now I know that NS is going for a younger crowd but there could be a content control(That is if you ever consider making a limb loss system, which you wont....) that could make it say like your leg is wounded or your arm is wounded and not show other peoples legs/arms getting torn off their bodies but simply go limp or stay normal but not move.
