I think the "get a bunch of server regs together and start scrimming" is the way to do it. That's what [GoM] is, a bunch of regs from ArsClan's NS server. Then you get better by scrimming alot.
The thing that people don't realize about clanplay, though, is that it's so much more fun than pubplay. No more having your marines wandering off and dying pointlessly, no more gorges dropping a single SC in some pointless place right off, so on and so forth. Just solid teamplay where strategy matters, where every skirmish has repurcussions, where a victory is earned and a defeat just sends you back to IRC to figure out what you did wrong. And now with 2.01d, where you can get those 2-0 wins, man.
So, yeah folks. Get some friends together and play. Go to #findnssscrim. Ask for a newer clan or second-stringers if you don't like getting 2-0ed, but remember: getting slaughtered is one of the best ways to get better.
Also Ice, Cham, why no lubs for GoM? We're scrimming every weekday and sometimes on weekends and we've played eR once and HAM never. Not to mention no lubs from pandas either. Perhaps many people are unaware that there are other leagues out there besides CAL. CAL is obviously the place to play if you want to go against the best, or if you want to be recognised, but for those who desire a league which is less competative, OGL may be a fine alternative. Our clan, [UVic], doesnt' scrim much, as most of us are busy university students, but we'll be playing in OGL when the ladder re-opens.
Many people who play NS casually may be turned off of competetive play. CAL does require a considerable amount of dedication, even with the option of re-scheduling your matches. Other leagues could be promoted as starting points for clans looking to begin competetive play.

Oh, and re: Saturday, it's not like you've got to play the match at 9 or 10 pm. Play it at noon, when you're most likely to have just woken up anyways. Saying that it "cuts into your social life" to spend 90 minutes at most at some point on a Saturday is... laughable. Worst case, reschedule and play it Thursday or whatever. Although as haysus points out, yeah, Thursday seems to be the university WHOO LET'S GET DRUNK day.
I know we've played a lot of new clans that seem to drift off after their first scrim with us out of fear or lack of hope or something like that. It makes me sad because I love to see new talent in the competitive arena (not just to scout but) because it's so much more fun to play NS scrims then it is to play on a pub, even if you lose, because you're with people that you can depend on.
I'm not sure what these new clans were expecting in their first scrim. Even top veterans scrimming together in a new clan won't be as good as a clan that has been together for a long time and knows how each other work. Expect to lose and learn from that. In fact if I were you I'd figure out something completely wacky to do, like a gorgerushkekek so you get a really good feel of how scrims play out. And ask to play them again after you lose. And again. And again.
In line with Ice I'm available in #damagenet and #findnsscrim for any help or advice (or scrimming ) that you will need to get your clan on your feet.

I'd like to take this time to introduce an idea I had concerning clans. The way I see it, cyber-gaming is a sport, and like all sports, there's a limit to how good you can get by constantly playing. First of all, techniques such as circle strafing aren't something you pick up w/ constant practice. You have to be taught this. Talent alone doesn't go far -- this talent has to be trained.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but most sports teams have practices that involve drilling certain aspects of their play until they get it perfect (free throws in basketball for example). I don't see why the same idea can't be carried over to cyber-gaming, in particular NS. You could have an obstacle course of some sort having several skulks ambush a marine and see how well they do. Doing this a lot will be a huge boost to a player's skill.
Do any clans do something similar to what I had in mind? Is there a reason you don't? Why not try it out? I know sound very nieve, but I personally think this is a good idea.
5 marines at the marine spawn. They have to get to a certain position on the map, but there are 6 skulks trying to stop them. No medpacks are going out, and once an alien is killed, he's out of the game. The little twist is, if one marine dies, they all have to start over again. Really helps to get used to crazy bunnyhopping/camping etc skulks from time to time, and does help the ol' teamwork along.

Circle-strafing has been around since forever heh, nothing has to be taught about it. You just keep your crosshair on the enemy while strafing left or right, nothing hard about it. The only way you get good at something is by playing constantly, just like any sport. The more you do it, the better you will eventually get.
Certain strats and tactics have to be practiced by a clan so every member knows whats going on, but individual FPS skill is on a person's own time. Unless of course you download your skill
IMO, if you have to go over basic things like circle strafing you should be cut. You can drill in NS to a certain extent. But it's pointless to drill remedial things like "mine avoiding" and "circle strafing" simply because such things require a certain level of intelligence within the individual, not proficiency in the game. In other words: you cannot teach someone to be smarter. As far as teamwork drilling goes, that's what scrims are for. Scrims are for new build orders and game theories. In the end however, since this is a FPS game, everything will ultimatly rely on individual skill; honed only by the individual on his/her own time.

We then equip ourselves with shotguns...
Not only is this fun, but it's fairly good practice. This is generally done outside of scrimming time, but it does help. The thing about NS is that good FPS skills are nice... but you also have to learn just how the weapons work also. Right now the SG was a bit elusive to some of us; learning it's effective range, and learning how to cope with the damn no-reload bug in the middle of fire fights. The whichbots are good FPS wise, they never ever miss their bites, but they are quite stupid.
It's quite good practice to deal with 10 or so skulks as nothing more than 2 marines with an SG and medspam from the comm. The comm also get's good medspam target practice, because like I said.. these bots are just as good in FPS terms as many top players, it's just they are so damn dumb, all they do is charge. You just have to outnumber yourselves to get the challenge.
However, I would like to point out that this practice is really nothing compared to scrims. Sure, practice is good for helping get down consistancy and working with your teammates, but it can't compare to the real thing. This quote explains it best:
"Experience is the best teacher. She gives the test first, and the lesson after."
NS has loads and loads of clans, you just don't realize it. People really only know the mainstream clans like er, std, syn and those. However, mainstream also includes oss, apex, tmm, and others. Or 200.177.229.252:27015 where clans like CiB, Ze, |o.P| and TTm. NS has a big clan base, not just they clans you see on the main irc channels like #findnsscrim or #naturalselection.

Also I just want to point you to this page to point out how few clans actually play their matches on the match date . CAL is very flexible right now (most likely to foster more involvement).
Actually, at noon I am feeding my son lunch and then it's time to play with his trains. Not everyone has the luxury of being in college still
Othell gave us 2 weeks to get this one done. The deadline hasn't passed yet
A not-too serious one, though, I think I'm too overloaded with stuff to be flooded with matches, scrimmages, and the like.
Just a group... Somewhat like a guild...

Same here. I've always felt that in 2.0, 6v6 just isn't balanced, mainly because of the faster rate at which aliens will gain res.

Sounds like fun.
I like to have little tournaments with a 2 hive fade and a fully upgraded jp marine, using whatever weapon he chooses. I think that's pretty good practice for doing mid-air swipes.

I disagree.
There are clanners who are both in college and work.
BTW either you're lying or your signature is out of date =P
It would probably encourage more clanplay if they knew they could get some help on the differences between clan and pub play. Granted, those things can be aquired by just scrimming until you find what works for you, but clearly not many want to try that route. I can't really blame them, it's hard.
But I'd love to see some diversity and I do see potential in alot of people that dont have clans or have clans that dont scrim, and they should give it a shot.
You really have no clue how exciting this mod can be until you find yourself in a tense 6v6

I know I wont be helping new teams, and I hope my clan isnt. It seems like a very nice idea, but we spend lots of time comming up with new strats, defenses, tactics etc... We're not just gonna give them to another team so they can catch up. Also, teams have to develop their own strats, every team has a different style of play, a strategy that works for one team wont neccesarily work for another. Also by spoon feeding strats you take away the team's adaptability, because they probably wont know what to do if the other team does something surprising.
Let teams figure out their own game style, its the best way to encourage growth and diversity in the community.
10v10 is a bit exagerated. This isint BF1942. Currently 6v6 is fine, we have trouble enough finding scrims with that formatt. I doubt alot of clans will have 8-10 people ready to scrim everyday. 7v7 would be the max I think any leagues should consider.
And in your comment about 6v6 doesnt make the game any fun. Its not that it doesnt make it fun it kinda brings out more of the individualist skill level of each player when you play small formatt cause most battles r 1v1 or 1v2 2v2 etc nothing like 5v5 every 1min.
"because people aren't ATTRACTED to 5v5 " cs is 5v5

Well, occasionally us #cri's hop on a server, get as many people as we can (this around midday usually... so it's like 6-7 people) put them on marines, and max out the alien teams with whichbots.
She gives the test first, and the lesson after."
lets get these clans scrimming...
It's the only server i idle in. Im in ~12 NS clan channel rooms (obviously there are more...). Quakenet is home to the european clans really, such as bacon men (#.bm) torment (#torment) and fleetwood (#fwd.q3f).
Not as big as #findnsscim on gamesnet, but a new one - #ns.search on quakenet maybe useful for clans / players in europe.
- Kar
I'ld also like to point out that the majority of players and clans play for fun. It's hard to find clans who play to win however...
No, they are very visible on the ground...
I would love to help the community grow in any way I can. Great to see new faces walking into the limelight and just to help people in general. In my opinion... the more clans the better... you're going to find new ideas leaking into the clan community, new strats and probably skilled players rising to the top that you've never heard of before now. Anyhow.. enough of my rant.
I gladly offer my clan's server to help others grow, just come on into IRC and get to know me and my guys.
We started into CAL this season... so far everything has been a blast. As for new clans getting started, concider this an open invitation to use my server for scrimages and matches. It will hold more than enough people and you can run the HLTV server flawlessly on top of that... hell.. I'll even host your demos.. heh
So grab your friends and bullrush the crowd, there are plenty of vets and even new clans willing to help you out. Think about it... clan play for the only mod to get a five star rating from planet half-life? Don't miss out.... its the best thing since sliced bread!
