Sure! Hit me with the file! Watch me complain about getting to rebuild more brush geometry. =^.^= I've already tackled what... just under half of the map already? :-)

In short, yeah, lemme at it! *gnashes at bars on cage*

If Relic25 (or whoever he left in charge if he's left or been hired or what-not) gives permission to whatever squad can be gathered to rebuild it, sure, I'm game. =^.^= Even Fenris after that, if the NS devs think it'd be worth it.

I think bast needs a remake more than nancy. Only reason nancy got picked is cause it was pulled. But I like bast a lot more, except for the horrible marine start. That part really needs to be redone.

Well I'm back to my own thing and all the other stuff I've had building up once we get this project done.

Actually, Nancy was something I've been working so hard on because back when 1.0 was first released, I was bitching loud and hard about what a pain in the rump the level was for Skulks. I said time and again how to fix it, even drew diagrams to show the construction differences...

Then I heard the .map file was lost in a HD crash, and whined muchly. Nancy was always one of, if not my absolute favorite map, despite its flaws. It was still a very fun map to play, and one I had every intention of rebuilding to 'repay' DevilDog from the first time I heard it had been lost. I intended to put up, or shut up until I could.

I've learned the HL .BSP file format, and experimented with little success with decompiling the map... Working with this newer decompile has given me more insights to how to make a better decompiler myself, in fact. Fixing Nancy has, for all intents and purposes for me, been a case of my putting up or shutting up. I said I could fix the skulk problems with the map, and said I knew how to do the brush grometry better, and now I've been lucky enough to try to show that I can do Nancy proud. I'm starting to made better tools to automate the .map recovery process, though these will be tools only I will use, not for distribution.

I don't intent to screw up. Believe me, every little change I've made, even minor texture cleanups, has been something I've sat there, sometimes made five or ten or even more revisions of an area, sometimes just as simple as changing the light texture to see what looked best behind a patch of infestation... because this is a labor of love.

Even adding the infestation to Subspace Array was something I tried several different texturing approaches before settling on that one. Infesting the texture directly looked too sharp and defined, not organic enough. Some textures didn't look good behind the 'hovering' infestation though, and I had a limited selection due to the texture choices made in the original level and other concerns such as overall level-wide texture usage. Yes, I worked fast, but very little of that time was spent building and moving brushes around. Dragging out the entire brushwork for Subspace Array Interface, from scratch, took me all of 5 minutes, pipes included. Adding the infestation as an experiment took longer to compile the first time due to a botched setting I used than it took to drag out and adjust vertex-by-vertex in some areas.

Bast, and Fenris, would be a labor of respect, and repayment to the Natural Selection team for building such a wonderful mod for me and many others to enjoy.

The least I can do, in lieu of becoming a Constellation member since I am often broke due to existing financial obligations, is help them recover the lost manhours spent on their maps that have been lost to HD crashes with my skills at reconstruction and fast brushwork. I don't have the skills to build complete maps on my own from start to finish, but I have the technical understanding of the game engine to build brushwork that's friendly to the engine, and effecient, based on an existing design given to me. In this case, duplicating existing maps.

As for 'remaking' Bast, I agree that it has more serious flaws than Nancy, but that seems to me to point towards rebuilding Nancy first regardless, as it's simpler to rebuild a map that only needs cleanup, not overall structure changes. Hopefully, if Relic allows, I'll be able to do his work as much justice, if not more, than I pray I'm doing DevilDogs work. But only the public, viscious as they are, will be able to judge me in the end on that regard. Not the veterans, not even the playtesters or developers, but the public at large are the loudest, harshest, and most opinionated critics. Veterans merely want as little change as possible, regardless of reason. Playtesters and developers often want a bit too much change, trying to fishtail to narrow in on the 'sweet spot' range so they can learn the interelations between values. The public? They just want a map that's understandable, fun to play, and engrossing. Three very nebulous and arbitrary values. And three I hope the Nancy Reconstruction Crew can attain.

I've been reading this topic in my 3rd period Programming class off and on since around it was started, and I have to admit that I'm very impressed with everything you guys have done. I can't wait for it to be done, I know that I'm deffinatly going to be putting it on my server, where it belongs with the official NS maps.

I'm experienced with mapping NS maps and doing entity editing via ripent.

Nancy <b>was</b> an official map. It was removed because the original source code was lost, and an unrecoverable error with Onos was occuring in the map with the new 2.0 revision.

Hopefully, it will be an official map again. =^.^=

I know the source was lost, and I know that it was official, and it wasn't included because of the Onos problems. My point is, this remake you guys are making belongs with the official maps, and I'm wishing right next to you guys that it gets included with 2.1.

    Keep up the good work.

    Bast's source is lost?!?!?

But... It was modified (updated) for 2.0, and don't they require you to submit the source along with the map to avoid this very problem?

Besides, surely somebody has a backup of the Bast source from 1.x, if not 2.x...

It was losing Bast's source that led to the thing with the source code being submitted along with the map, I believe ^^

What was Fenris like anyways? Any screen shots that can now be released since its no longer top secret for 2.0....

And didn't the mapper of Bast leave the NS community all together? And if so, why? <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Just a quick note... I'm making a lot of progress on the Nancy Marine Start area still, but I've had work on and off this week, so I can't sit down to devote enough resources to it to just 'blow through' like I did the rest of Nancy. =^.^=

The 'cockpit' area got its glass smoothed out, so it's noticably less blocky now. It also 'rounded up' the cockpit by a couple degrees on the angle of the glass, so it's not actually any higher, but feels a smidge higher, walking and crouch-jumping around in. :-)

The lower area is done, as is the cockpit and the brushwork on the ramp, though most of the texturing is yet to be put in place in the lower area. The 'computers' on the diagonal-down ramp to the cockpit are being shifted to level platforms, instead of being 'cut off' at an odd angle by the ramp. Clip-brushing comes after texturing, so nothing there, though clip-brushing is also trivial to do so it goes by quickly. :-) The cockpit is fully textured inside though, the outside 'skybox area' will be worked on next, then I'll likely go back and texture the lower area again so I can install clip-brushing there and segment it off into the 'finished Nancy parts' folder. And yes, I'll be making the cockpit build-friendly while blocking building outside of it. =^.^= It'll chew up a couple of entities, but it should work just fine.

Please don't cut out the ridges along the ramp. They provide a nice camping spot for a marine guarding. Oh, and I'm not sure about making the start bigger, but if we did there should be a vent connecting the start side room with the bridge.

Um... huh? I didn't say anything about cutting out any ridges on the ramp, Lazer.

The only 'ramp' I changed AT ALL was the mini-ramp leading from the Command Chair to the 'cockpit' that Marines used to build on top of all the time. =^.^= Nothing is bigger except the 'glass bubble' is a little easier to crouch-jump around underneath without getting hung up no the chairs. :-) Other than that area, no geometry changes at all.

This simple enough? :-) As I said, I just put the two computers on 'platforms' instead of having them shoved through the ramp and cut off randomly. A texturing fix that adds about 8 WPolys.
