Or 'Defend teammates / harass enemy from afar'.
Or 'sneaky suicide soldier' like a skulk.
What's the Fade role? It's too weak to fight HA marines, HMGs and shotguns kill it in less then a couple seconds. They're strong enough to waste a tiny turret farm and electrified RTs (Even then, the time and damage taken to kill one electrified RT will almost kill the fade) With motion tracking they suffer even more.
So what's the role? Kill early game marines? Gee some role.
I said it in another thread: WHO USES HIT AND RUN TACTICS?
In the real world who uses them? Geurilla fighters. They won't bluntly attack enemy positions, but they'll harass and not do real harm, just irritate the enemy.
Why do geurilla fighters use hit and run? Because they're understaffed, they have poor weaponry, they're largely untrained, and numerically outnumbered.

I think Fades are actually pretty well positioned.
They remain useful throughout the game and are handy for destroying both buildings and marines. Sure, without umbra support or healing, they aren't going to win head-on against the top of the marine tech tree, but that's kind of the point.
A is only as useful as the player controlling it.
Fades are definately useful if you know how to use them. At 2 hives you don't even need to get regen, metabolize does that now. Get Carapace toughen up the fade a bit. And hit and run is definately a role. It's also known as tatical strike. Fade blinks into turret farm, hides behind a turret using it to block the other turrets, kill that and makes a hole that others can get into. Yah a gorge with bile bomb can do the same thing...but not with the speed a fade can. Blink gets a fade in close range of it's target, and while it might have a much harder time handleing that HA now it can weaken it and distract it for other units to come in for the kill. Fades aren't the killing machines they used to be, they aren't tanks. Fades have their uses at midgame when marines have teched up but not to HA levels yet.

I look at fades the same way I do jetpacks. They both have their uses, but are generally not worth the res.
Most of the time I see fade players going around, making about ten kills or so, then they get in over their heads and try and take out a group of 4+ marines and get owned to hell... Just like a jetpacker will usually fly around, kill a few skulks with his shotgun, then fly into an OC trap and die.
I agree a good fade player can be devastating, but any of the aliens' breeds can be devastating when used to their fullest potential.
So basically, fade sucks(for the 50 res he costs), and buff jetpacks.
Played a Fade for almost an entire round last night as I sorely needed the practice. I learned several things.
1) Redemption Fades suck. Don't stay in the fight long enough to do anything useful. 2) Blink absolutely kicks ****. I was using this to get past the Marine base in Bast's Atmopheric Processing to get to the backside of Feedwater which was locked down by marines. I was blinking between the two bases, harassing them enough to keep the attention of most the marines while my team tried to take Feedwater from below. 3) Before Ohnos, Fades are your best bet with one hive for taking out electrified structures. They require less Gorge healing to get the job done. 4) A Fade crouched behind a structure he's attacking is hard as hell to hit. I took down 3 Turret Factories and several Nodes in this matter, killing marines as they came around (thus in range of my melee) to try and dislodge me. It appears to me that a crouched Fade can get into all the same spots a Skulk could.
I think the problem most peaple have with fades is their incredibly high learning curve. They are definatly the hardest Alien to master. And thus, this leads many peaple too look at them as underpowered. I'm of the opinion that nothing needs to be done. I've seen enough get owned and enough kick **** to bring me to that conclusion.
They keep saying its a waist of time posting this topic... but there still flaming it.. your right, dont waist YOUR time. kthx omgigglez contradictive buggers.
Only thing i have to add to the topic is agreeing that fades are expensive for there worth. maybe knock em down to 40 or 45 res.
Fades until hive 3 a melee class. A lone shotgun can take them out in 1 hit close range unless they have carapace and the shotguns aren't upgraded. Its not really feasible to risk 50 res trying to attack someone with 10 res that can instakill you. Either go put up a hive or keep waiting for onos.
Fade: The new onos (only this time its not a base wrecking tank.)
with me, the only time i go fade is either when we really need a stronger guy but onos is too far away to wait for res, or when we get the 3rd hive up. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the usefulness of the fade's acid rockets. ( i miss the 1.04 fade... )
The only problem with the fade is that adrenaline+blink=unlimited blink...I can fly around maps with blink as long as we have 3 movement chambers. If you don't believe me, try it. It works.

1) They don't really have a real role. Hit and run isn't much of a role, it's just a way of performing because it sucks at everything else.
2) They don't effectively counter marine midgame. Skulk -> Fade -> Onos. Fade should be the midground fighter, but it isn't.

The fade does not suck at the hit and run role. Their ability to blink into a marine group to kill a few marines and then blink out in less than a few seconds makes them unbeatable.
The fade is designed to be a hit and run unit, and it isn't suppose to be excel in any other roles. If you are going to say that the fade sucks at everything else, then so does the ono when it isn't rushing.
