Actually, smart bomb is not the inventor of turrent. Like homerx said, it owes its birth to Starcraft. It's commonly known that free gaming brings tons of idiots who can't spell to save their lives. I'm not sure turrents became to be so, because not a single letter of turret is near the letter n. I would have to agree that it started out as a comical misspelling among vets that newbies began to use. Speaking of Starcraft phrases, a cookie to anyone who recognizes "Carrier = Instant Win!"

EDIT - Tyhpon - Not everyone uses the homerow

Typhon, your explanation is good, but not that accurate.

Some people really do think turret is spelled as "turrent".

Ahhh.. the wonderful story of Lorks on clorfs..
I remember it as if it were yesterday.
...
Wait.. what did I do yesterday? **** ><
okay, bad example.. Anyways, lork on the clorf all started long ago during a game on NS_hera on lunixmonster (because, you know.. it pwns you) I was just sitting around, spectating with Thorax, while CWAG was on a cliff, as a lerk. Now, the marines had no clue as to where these spikes/spores were coming from (as CWAG wasn't on the "usual" cliff, with above the glass hallway). Anyways, Lunixmonster has this nice feature which allows Spectators and readyroom people talk to and read what the in-game people say. So I decided to be a cheap blaggard and give away what CWAG was doing, but to avoid having people get angry at me for it, I purposely mispelt the words.. Because, you know.. only a nub would think of something like that, and no one listens to nubs.
Thusly, lork on the clorf was born. Of course, it didn't stop at that.. Leading to the later* creation of "Cornmander" and "Shirtguns" (originally shirtgorns, but changed in thoraxs comic)
(*later being the next round on ns_lost)

and of course, Turrents (in NS) mostly comes from Smart_bombs imfamous "Suggestions" for "NS 1.5"

shirtguns are actually pre-lunixmonster; I'm sure I saw that word come leaping out of dsgasdsa a few times on Nano-Gridlock.

EC perpetuated the use of turrents in NS, especially when used in the context of "More turrents Commando!"
This is because they have a clan member named Commando, adding extra humor.

american slurred prnunciation keeps the "et" on the end of the word turret very quiet. to a nonative english speaker it sounds VERY similar to turrent. perhaps the word is borne of pronunciation?

Hey man, its kinda ironic on how one of Smart_Bomb's ide was ACUALLY implemented (in a way). I recall him suggesting completely silenced aliens, if I'm not mistaken.

except that "lurk" is actually a word in the english language (ie, lurking about).

I hate pheREmones myself.

But I do concede that shootguns and turrent are far and away more irritating.

People just don't care anymore I think, and that's a damn shame.

First time i heard "turrents" was on Quake: Team Fortress
Commando arised from someone truely believing the 1.0 "COMM" was short for commando, a super alien killing machine, he constantly wanted to be the commando, when allowed to be the "commander" proceded to build a second CC because he felt bad that he had taken the commando position away from the previous commando, and wanted to share the responsibility - Is'nt it sweet

I think this is a case of "turrent" seeming easier to say to a certain degree, rather than "turret"

I only say this cos first time I heard it was when I bought Dune 2 (about 7 years ago?) and my friend would come round and watch me play and had the extremely annoying habbit of calling my "turrets" .. "turrents"

Even back then, I was like "FFS ITS A TURRET"
