    ok, yes, i am relatively ignorant when it comes to game coding, but my question is, couldnt NS in its current form be 'converted' and still ran as is on the HL2 engine? Then as the Dev team has time, upgrade and improve piece by piece? Im aware that the current HL engine and HL2 engine could be totally un-compatable, but thats why im asking, cause i dont know <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Yes it could be ported but i remember reading somewhere that flayra sadi if ns went to hl2 it would be rebuilt from the ground up.

    The HL2 SDK will come with extensive tools for porting assets from HL1 to HL2. All models, textures, skins, etc will be portable to HL2's format. The only problem is that it will probably take as much work to modify the old maps to be up to HL2 standard as it would to completely redo them from scratch. So, while you could do it, it would make no sense.

    Not to mention that some of NS's biggest coding feats in terms of movement (lerk, skulk and jp movement) would all be incompatible with the physics system (engine hacks to make some look like it works doesn't translate well into an engine that really can do those intended effects for real). I also have some pretty big doubts about how easily the tools could automatically convert the commander mode and the way he interacts with the map. I'm guessing that would require an overhaul too...

    All in all a lot more work compared to what CS or DOD have to change (ie: "weee updated models... wee updated maps.... oh wow that was quick... lucky I dont have anything even remotely complicated in my mod...")

So then the layout appears simple, but large. Then I run outa room on the grid fairly quickly, argh. Hopefully no more of that!

    Just thought of something that would really help to create atmosphere. Shadows! Every structure, model, casts a shadow on the ground, then crawl up the wall. I think that would be the biggest leap forward in better atmosphere. Hehe. It would just make everything seem so much more realistic.

    Well if the rumours and subsequent calculations are true then it could take somebody 10-20 minutes to cross a map on foot (straight across, not diagonally, which would take even longer).

    Ofcourse fast vehicles and/or fast creatures would make that seem not so big after all...

    Not sure how it would work with commander mode, but if NS goes HL2, multiple level maps (floors ontop of floors) would be kind of interesting.

    dunno if this has been said and I'm not too keen on sifting thru all them pages, but I'd like an alternative to HAs and JPs, although what I dont know. Maybe like rollerblade thingys ...

    Maps are scaled to be about a half mile squared! Thats a Square kilometer.
    1000x1000 meters of in game space in Real time.
    You could make a city block in game! and thats just the x and y then you have the z axis. Maps are no longer going to be cramped areas, but real structures that could be IRL.

    That is a possibility and I hope that someone does make LV-426, the map could be big enough to do it!

    Really what ied like to see is Hera on NS2, that would be pure pwn.
    As well as all the "elite" and shiny walls of tanith
    The dark and moody corridors full of shadows and swinging lights in Nothing.

    I'd like to see welding allmost everything, and have the aliens break through it allso have the spores fill up rooms and stuff and make it so if you get enough spores in the vents it travels through the map <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->(same with umbra) allso outdoor areas would be cool and some new weapons (and better looking ones) aswell allso some new aliens.


    and the water person effect for the cloaking so when certain things hit it (like light and stuff) it would kinda reflect and look all cool and stuff



    oh I forgot, wind effects to! so out side the wind might carry the grenades a bit off course same with acid rockets and stuff!

    plus I'd like to see bodies get mutalated like when a skulk bites your legs, you have a lack of legs

    Map idea:

    Spaceship tumbling toward human planet. It's know that the Kharaa on the ship will survive the crash. Marines must wipe out the Kharaa before the ship crashes.

    The cool part is gravity is based on the planet, cause the artificial gravity is out. -So, while the ship rotates, gravity moves. The rest of the details can be ironed out by the map designer to create balance.

    Thats a wild Idea.

    Which gives me an Idea.
    Why not do a map where the Marines are cleaning out a crashed Mega huge Ship. The map could be done up-side-down, with the roof at the bottom due to the crash. Plus all kinds of damage and destruction to the ship.

    I dont know if that one would work. The rts would then be on the ceiling, messing up the models. Its an interesting idea, but im not sure an upside down ship would work.

    Do to the fact that the ship was crashed, you could crash it into a outpost. then the parts where the Rts would be would be inside the outpost or on parts of the ship that are damaged and right-side-up.

    I just think it would look really cool walking along a celing and viewing the ship from that angle.

    We were talking to flayra last week and hl2 came up. we were all curious about his plans for hl2, he said it would cost around 2 million to make ns for hl2, that is not just a rehash, something worthwhile and new. but flay also said he had given a lot of thought to how he would make the conversion, and it seemed like he was planning to convert it. seems like a lot of money, but flay and others have been working on ns full-time for more then 2 years with no pay.

    ns:c, steam and eventualy ns-retail will hopefuly help ns grow to a point where the hl2 port is viable.

    Well, I think it would be nice to have vehicles. The Kharaa have to have a home planet. I would love to ride in a vehicle, shooting for someone else like in a Warthog in Halo!

    WELLLL with the HL2 source code realesed and the MAJOR redo to halflife 2 says that we won be seeing HL2 for quite a while however im ready withh all teh money for the biggest bes even p2p version if nessessary,yep im a true fan.

    Add more guns... maybe add something so marines can choose a weapon when they spawn, so instead of always lmg, they could choose to spawn with dual pistols instead, doubt it would overpower them but would certainly add variety to marine play.

    i dont post very often, but here's my two cents to the player side ideas for ns2.
    Im not sure on teh exact specs for hl2 engine capabilities, but what if there were bits and pieces of genetic material that u can add to a basic life form. start off as a skulk (then adding some ns:c components) u gain a "level" of evolution and have the options to do various points of morphing so u start by slowly adding wings, or bigger claws/teeth, etc. i just thought that u could have hundreds of combinations of parts to make a very personalized killer.
    If this is posible, if u get a certain combo of various skills and upgrades, u reach a point that u go through a full blown new organisim.

    On the rines side, i think it would be neat to expand the welder to use random bits and pieces of junk lying around, have the welder fuse the two together, can make a wall or some sort of physical change to the environment to alter the maps. say theres a bunch of junk in a corner, a rine welds some pieces to a generator lying around, and magically u have some fan, or wall or some other obstruction to slow the alien masses.

    Again, im not sure if this is possible, but would be cool.

    Another tweak i would like to see is more than one puffy gas be collected as a resource. have raw metal, powerplants, etc. buildings would require a powersupply, bigger squads (if ai components are implemented) would need food or water, raw metal for armor, guns. power packs if energy weapons are used etc. also, the aliens would just kinda use idk..fill in the gaps

    also, cant wait for ns:c, from what ive seen, looks awesome. once again, thx dev team and flay, ns is a great game.
