Steam has ALWAYS rocked. All the idiots(ya, I'm calling you a idiot if you did. Steam had -2 days- of not being good. After that, it was fine, and IS fine. So stop your bellyachin, nubs) that said it wasn't good are just jumping the gun because they never tried the beta, and haven't spent enough time playing with it to see the beauty.

Argument? I see no argument.

Steam has stabilized, and the 'OMGz0r!!! 5t34m 1z t3h 5U><><oRz!!!oneone!11!eleven!' type have been proven wrong. As was predicted by quite a few... in a couple of years, we'll likely be wondering how we lived with WON, with all the stuff Steam can do.

The only problem, as far as I'm concerned, was taking a few seconds to boot up, and the Friends network crashing.

However, I like it. The sound bug is fixed, you can play 1.6, and it doesn't take up more room than regular. Overall, it's pretty good--even more than WON. And no one should say, "Yeah, when it works!. I've gone through Steam pretty much bug-free and crash-free. Except for Chess, for some odd reason. Another thing, it loads up faster than ASE or Gamespy.

Another thing: isn't there something with somethingawful.com that you're not allowed to post?

The Cons: Only works with Half Life mods, occasional framerate drops, only comes with one skin.
*cough*

Otherwise it sums it up nicely

rofl =P SA rulez. I still haven't touched steam. I installed it, but I dunno how to get it to work with NS so I'm not gonna bother trying until I actually have to. The all-seeing eye works for me.

My only problem with Steam is that I can't seem to find NS or filter for NS.

Help! I'm just a little too lazy to search!

Honestly, I used to like SA back when they were classy. But then, I suppose you can only mock sites filled with <blink> tags so many times.

They garner no respect from me, for being outright intentional flamebait. Sure, there are stupid people on the face of the planet. Can't we (mostly, outside of presidential elections where somehow they got off their pork-rind dusted butts to go vote) ignore them and let them live their stupid lives in a modicum of peace?

If not, I can direct you to the nearest Down's home. They're much easier targets than your run-of-the-mill AOL user.

No, I'm sorry, Steam does not rock. Especially for those who are already hard pressed for computer space.

I don't even have an extra gig left on both my drives combined, I just can't handle steam on my computer, even though its not too shabby rig either. A simple 1ghz geforce 2 512 ram but only 20 gigs of memory.

*Sigh*

my only problem with steam at the present time:
You do need a network conenction to play single player half-life, and it's other campain mods.

Which **** me off to little end when my friend's cable went out... (god I hope it's just configured wrong, and you -can- play without a connection)
• EdcrabEdcrab Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4324Members
To be honest, I haven't dared try Steam for an age- well, not on my latest machine anyway. I'll have to see if I can persuade the thing to acknowledge the existence of the HL CD sitting right next to it...

As of now, I've always felt Steam was an ingenius idea (if executed well). Currently my only real gripe is, as Liger pointed out, the need for a connection for LAN/SP gaming, and the continual worry that HL2 might also have a similar requirement for too long a time

I'm willing to reserve my judgement on Steam until I use it. Which has been a problem since I have never once got past the Unable to connect to Steam error. I've been trying since day 1. None of the so called fixes or patches have helped one bit.

before your brutal lockage.

Steam owns, PERIOD.

they forgot to mention the fact that your friends buddy list shows when your friend is in game, and allows you to join in by RIGHT CLICKING ON THEIR NAME AND HITTING A 'JOIN GAME' OPTION. do you REALIZE HOW AWESOME THIS IS???!?!???

no more tediously exchanging IPs over whatever IM clients you use, just tell your friends 'ill be on in a minute find the server thru ur buddy list'

and, if the server is full, IT HAS HLSW STYLE RETRY UNTIL YOU GET A SPOT!!!!!! yeah, that is a pain in the arse, but hey, if you're bored while you wait, YOU CAN NOW ALT TAB WITHOUT SOME QUEER SOUND OR MOUSE BUG, or, YOU CAN PLAY CHESS WITH YOUR FRIENDS UNTIL A SPOT IS OPEN!!!

oh god STEAM OWNS BEYOND BELIEF

TBH Steam won't take much more room than the the half life install does. maybe 100mb more if that. The problem is that at the moment not all mods work with steam. So when WON is finally shut down you won't ned to have your sierra install anymore so that means the space taken will be almost the same.

STEAM runs on my computer just fine(save for being a little slow at times), however I dont see any real need for it. I dont need a 'friends' list(I dont get into all the ICQ/IRC/Net buddy stuff), I prefer the old style Quakeish takes-up-half-your-screen-console, I prefer ASE over the HL server browser, and I dont like the fog problem.

STEAM is not the greatest piece of software on earth, nor is it the worlds crappiest piece of software. To me it is unecessary software. Why fix something that's not broken? WON works just fine. I can live with STEAM and I can live w/o STEAM.

when i stop crashing before/after every round...

when my choke goes down to 0 again....

when a small ping spike wont get me booted....

when all half life mods are fully supported....

steam will rule.

Steam is the Shizzy! /sarcasm

In all reality, Steam is pretty good. I like the way you can see where your friends are playing and join them on the server that they're on. A truely winnaring feature (). In any case. My only real gripe is the fact that I still have trouble with custom models (no need to post and links or FAQs, I know how to do it), but that aside it's probably only going to get better as the years come .

oh oh... can i update my list?

- Joining a server and not being able to switch weapons... yea, a gorge is so useful with spit only

I can play offline.

I've loved steam since about an hour after I installed it. Initially I though exactly what all you steam-haters were thinking. Unrequired, bloated, buggy, unstable, imcompatable, etc... But after a while I began to explore all the features of it. I discovered some really nifty doovies.

I've not been without my troubles with steam. In fact right now my steam menu is showing "#SteamRoot.blah" on all the buttons and and headings. Steam is a very new and ambitious concept. It just needs development time and support from mod makers (Like Flayra already has) to mature.

Have patience!
