Things look bleak imo.

Clans are 90% more likely to break up and get angry at everything due to clan politics.
I think when NS and steam integration is here - you'll see a fresh flow.

Yup, with HL2 coming out soon.. (or out now if you want to look at it like that.. (don't start discussing that)) ...people are excited about that, and see HL as a dieing game

I love NS and it has been a LOT of fun...I loved beta testing and doing the vet program...but things just aren't going in the right direction IMO. 1.04 was the funnest version of NS, and since 1.04's release every beta patch has gone further and further away from that. NS:Combat is no exception to the rule. The first version of NS:Combat was really fun because it was new...but now basically noone plays it.
Natural Selection is fun AT ITS CORE: Skulks and lerks and gorges vs Marines.
Natural Selection is NOT fun as fades and onos vs Heavy Armor and Jetpack 3/3 marines. That is what ns:combat is. That is what classic NS has become. And as much as I've tried to bring the fun level back into NS it is NOT my game nor anyone else's here but Flayra's. Flarya is an awesome person and understands ALOT about programming, gaming, competitive play, and the community. But you can't have a competitive without competition...And that is what NS lacks. NS has a good basis for competitive play, but it scared away most people. The top teams scared away most people from competing. A new CS team feels like after a week of practice they are CAL-M level and have a chance of beating good teams. A new NS team will take 2 months or more before they even have a chance to beat a decent NS team. Probably 4-6 months before they can compete with the top teams, and by compete i mean still lose but win 1/5 matches against top teams.
Anyways, thats my feeling on the subject.
i think your right HL is still fairly popular, this is NS only from what i see...

i would hardly call half of the top ten clans in NS quitting ns "some clans"
that has a big impact, if every ns clan left tommrow leaving only pub players, that would esily cut the ns servers in half... not to mention everyone would be playing with unskilled players forcing all remaining skilled players out....
wouldnt take long after that for the game to totaly die....
im not saying its gonna happen its just what alot of people have been saying...

As for NS dying...I don't see it personally, not in terms of public play anyway. Not yet.
I also can't agree about this game dragging on thing...public play wise, the best games are those that see-saw, never looking to go specifically one way or the other. in 1.04 you could always tell, since 2.0 it's been a much more balanced affair, now that marines have got to know some tactics since their changes and aliens changes...I see a lot more games where marines get 4 or 5 res nodes, and the game is really close, with one or two turning points.
These games are fun, the mad jp/hmg rush that some people seem to miss (not saying anyone here does) was not fun...nor was waiting out your time to go fade, or evolve to gorge to put the hive up. Now what you do with your time is more important.

Not every pub player sucks. A lot of people have a life, and can't be around every on a lot of nights to sit in front of a computer screen. I also noticed a lot of clans meet on saturday. If you want players, thats not the way to get em. I know I actually have stuff to DO on Saturday nights, such as go out with friends or with my girlfriend. Sure, NS is fun, but actually doing something is a helluva lot better. And I sure as hell prefer chatting with my gf or something to NS. Sorry Flayra, but there's no way NS is gonna be better than her <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Even if there are no clans, there will still be a game. A lot of people just can't make the commitment.

YES YES YES! Finally another who shares my pain at the loss of lerk bite. Lerks just do one of two things now, spam gas.... or spam gas.
They are now jsut campers that dont hunt anything and dont patrol or get into the action with umbra etc. Now they jsut spam umbra or gas from a distance and you dont feel involved in the combat. Spikes is useless although i can still use my so called leet skilz to spike HA's to death.
Increasing the health from 65 to 125 just reinforced this "tactic" as before lerking was all aout timing and staying in areas to either ambush marines or support assaults or even to jet packer hunting or HA damaging. Flying over their heads quickly and biting managed to disorientate , confuse and wear down their armour very effectively, now spikes dont exactly bother the HA's.
This is just the lerk im getting started. I wpould ramble about more changes like fade blink etc that were difficult to master and the res **** now but i dont think theres enough room or patience for that sort of thing <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
