Everything has been copied and redone since Shakespeare, but that doesn't make it bad does it ?

    Half-Life 2 - Mostly eye candy and vehicles. What can I say though, it's Half-Freaking-Life 2.

Halo 2 - Yes, it's Halo. But on Earth, with new guns, vehicles and even more Covenant love.

Metal Gear Solid 3 - It's MGS3. Kojima-san doesn't know how to make a bad game, just a confusing one (Raiden)

Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes - It's MGS...for GCube. I'm celebrating my 1 year anniversary with my Cube this December so i'll show it some love.
I'll always prefer story over flash, though Flash does help <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
    I've got copies of all these games reserved already <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Twin Snakes is pushed back?

    Huzzah!

    I won't be poor!

    I could afford it then!

If I had money, i'd reserve all the games I want. or buy them.

As it is, my friend is lavishing 50-60$ on his friends, per friend.
an Apache model/cast iron Apache and Max Payne 2 or a different game my mother won't get me. heh.

While I feel this Nostalgia too, theres one thing that I still see WAAAY too much.

Jaded Gamers. And its **** me off.

First off- everyone I see disses Call of Duty till they play it. Then they shut up.

Battlefield is a great game- its the players that suck. Try finding a good server.

Sure, ton of games these days are clones, but many aren't clones- merely similar, but MUCH, MUCH better (like waffles, and waffle crisp cerial- we all know the crisp is better).

I love TONS of old games. I wish the RPGs of today would adopt the stories of games such as Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and even the old 'who cares, but its fun!' RPG sense of "Warrior" (NES).

DOOM kicked ****, as well did many of its followers.

Command & Conquer kicked ****, and so did Warcraft.

2D games in general kicked ****.

BUT THERE WAS ALWAYS ONE PROBLEM- technology always got better, while Gamers keep putting their expectations higher. Its great to have high expectations- but guys, NOTHING even REMOTELY similar to a game thats 'original' will ever seem 'as good' again. Why? Because thats how things are. Remember the first time you played NS? You probably started out with "Damn, this is a nice looking mod. Hey- what the hell. Why'd this gun drop out of thin air. What the hell?"- then you noticed you said that on mic.

"Its the commander. He dropped you a shotgun"

And no game was ever like that again.

And never will a game be, either. I didn't like ANY RPGs until I was old enough to understand- then I LOVED Chrono Trigger, and moved on to FF VII, then back to FF VI, V, IV, and then forward to VIII, IX, and eventually X.

I didn't move on from HL for a while, sure- but thats because my PC couldn't handle it. When we got a LAN center in fresno, I stormed that place, and played everything BUT HL.

Just...learn not to be jaded, and try these new-fangled games. They may not have the same experience, but its like your first car- you waited so long, but...it got old after a while, and you just keep searching for that better car, but even after the third porsche, you don't feel like you did that first time.

Sure, there's plenty of great games being made today. But what yesterday's games had that today's lack is <i>variety</i>. Sure, back in the early to mid 90's, there were a lot of clones out there (2D shooters, platformers anyone?) but developers were also a heck of a lot more experimental. Just think about the premises of some of those old Genesis titles, and I can garuantee that those ideas would be laughed at today. Like someone else said, we've got WWII fps, Sports games, movie franchises, level treadmill MMORPG's, RTS, and a smattering of smaller genres, each with pretty well defined gameplay and design.

For the past few years, "revolutionary" games (with a few exceptions) have been mostly just mixes of genres (Stealth Action, Action RPG, FPS/RTS <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> ). I have to wonder how much further, for how many more years this can go on before gamers give up on new titles or come to expect crappy (read: unoriginal) games as the norm. I'd like to think Co-op play, making gaming more social (a lot like NS is doing) along with actually applying new technology to more than graphics, is something we can look forward to. Also, making games more flexible to how a <i>player</i> wishes to play the game, like what GTA III did, but taken to the absolute limits of hardware and design. Sounds vague? That's cause I honestly have no idea what these games will be like, more than a gut feeling that "this would be the <i>dream</i> game". I'm sure you all have had an idea of a game like that <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

PS: I was surprised and glad to hear Wheel of Time and Operation Flashpoint mentioned! Try out the demos - even now I think they stand up nicely. Multiplayer WoT is really neat I thought - a different feel to it than normal FPS deathmatch.

Hehe - Wheel Of Time. I recently started ploughing through the Jordan books. Then I found the game gathering dust on my shelf. I'd never even installed it before. I can't even remember how it got there. Its a good game. Massive cut scenes. Hangs together well. Not too impressed with the limits placed on "ammo", but hey, at least it makes you a bit more careful.

Not sure about Deus Ex 2. I loved the original (not at first, but when I got into it). Man that game was looong. Lots of depth too. I think they've dumbed the sequel down (removed the RPG elements and gone for augs exclusively). And its going to be shorter. We'll see, but this has put me off already.

Technology is good if it adds to the game and doesn't dominate it to the detriment of the game. For example, total land morphing in Populous 3, isometric view in Syndicate.

Besides, I don't have time to keep tabs on what games are out these days.

Can anyone point me to a few decent games review sites ?

I am getting really tired of Medal of Honor and Everquest clones,

Am I the only one who still enjoys the original Rainbow 6, Age of Empires, Sim City 2000 and Operation Flashpoint?

Am I the only one who still has his Super Nintendo hooked up to play Mario and Zelda?

the amount of WWII First person quake shooters scare me.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

This is my game Wish List, as I usually prefer games that have backstory and such:

Max Payne 2 - It's Max Payne 2. Duh. It's got a mind to match the flash.

Homeworld 2 - It's Homeworld 2. Duh. It's basically Homeworld 1 streamlined and with new ships, purdy ships, that make things go boom!

Knights of the Old Republic - Yes, it's a number-cruncher, but it is KotOR. It's got such nice story and it's a Bioware game. Like Blizzard, they don't know how to make a BAD game. Yes, they might make mediocre but not BAD.

    Half-Life 2 - Mostly eye candy and vehicles. What can I say though, it's Half-Freaking-Life 2.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

... Well, I think _Creep_'s statement can be repeated:

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Why are so many games are derivative ? Because we buy them, that's why. We buy clones, remakes, movie tie-ins, sequels. We want the same, day after day. We don't like new things or surprises.

Who can blame the industry for churning the same old stuff out ? What I find amazing is that we marvel at this particular lighting effect in that particular game and then totally ignore massive innovations in gameplay in games like Black & White (I'm not saying Black & White was particularly good). <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

(Oh, and yes -- I played SystemShock 2 this weekend. It still scared the hell out of me.)

Did I mention there's mods for ut2k3 that let you use vehicles because the code's already there and epic just didn't get around to using it? =o

I'd love to do some modding to try and make something different but someone's pinched my ut2k3 so I'm feeling a bit miffed >< <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
You get a £10 rebate if you have the orginal tho.

And people have already moded it.

As for Unreal 2, its free multiplayer add on U2XMP, I cant tell you much from beta land other than I hope those models are tempory.

PS2 owners: Play Ico. Seriously. It's short, but worth it. It's art. Real art. Makes for a really good weekend rental.

DOOM, my mother liked ICO. Of course, she also likes CS(but not NS, grrr) so her sense of taste is not to trust <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->.

The reason I prefer sequels (note, not rip-off's) is that I know what to expect and because I liked the original I think i'll like the second one.

That said, Ico is fun but give me some time with MGS2 instead. Nothing like leading around the cute sister of Otacon.

Homeworld 2 isn't as great as Homeworld 1, but considering homeworld 1 is one of the best damn games ever, HW2 is still several million notches above say, soldier of fortune 2 (Also good fun)
  • Smoke_NovaSmoke_Nova Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8697Members
Still, it's Homeworld. It's got some improvements. The Build interface is streamlined, which is handy.

I also like the revamped fighter Squadrons. The new Ion Frigates are sweet and Torpedo Frigates....oh can you say Fun fun fun watching 12-max Torpedo Frigs fire a full volley at a Cruiser?
  • uranium_235uranium_235 Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9478Banned
Yeah, but it's less fun watching your torpedo frigates get chewed up and spat out by said cruiser <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> IMO torpoedo frigates were useless. Didn't pack enough of a punch. Heavy Missile frigates, on the other hand...
  • Smoke_NovaSmoke_Nova Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8697Members
    did I say cruiser?

    I meant Carrier.

I only have the demo so I can't get heavy missile frigs.
