What Do You Name Your Pc/hdd(s)?
Yay for me being bored....
So what do you name your PC, or what do you name your HDDs?
Personally my PC is nameless, but I suppose naming a PC is mainly reserved for server rigs....
Anyways.
Drive \ Space \ Name
===============
C:\ - 005Gb - Recca (Dedicated drive for Windows and programs)
D:\ - 035Gb - Ryo-Ohki
E:\ - 080Gb - Hikaru
F:\ - 080Gb - Luffy
G:\ - 080Gb - Alphonse
H:\ - 120Gb - Shikamaru
I:\ - 120Gb - Onizuka
J:\ - 120Gb - Van
Total HDD Space: 640Gb
I like to collect anime... *cough*
I suppose you want to know where the names come from... They're all anime.
Recca = Flame of Recca
Ryo-Ohki = Tenchi Muyo!
Hikaru = Angelic Layer
Luffy = One Piece
Alphonse = Patlabor
Shikamaru = Naruto
Onizuka = Great Teacher Onizuka
Van = The Vision Of Escaflowne
Please don't hate me...

Currently I have:
4GB for OS and essentials (essential = any application required for secure and basic system function, such as antivirus, WinRAR, MS Office)
~22GB, Storage, for non-speed dependent apps and storage of non-critical files
~22GB, Game, defragmented on a very regular basis for speed-dependent apps
1.5GB, Swapfile, formatted in FAT32 instead of NTFS and with only one file: Windows' swapfile.
Had I known I'd be interested in dual-booting into Linux at the time of my last full system rebuild, I probably would've made a small OS partition for linux and set its swapfile to that 1.5GB too, since it's in FAT32.
[edit]Six <i>hundred</i> and forty gigs? On one machine? ... You're going to tell me where you found good deals on those hard drives. You're going to link now. <i>Now or The Cheat gets it</i> <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
I knew a guy who had a 120Gb HDD, which he screwed up... and he lost 120Gb worth of files.... gg....

Of course. I <i>did</i> say all programs necessary for basic function went on my OS partition <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Just kidding, Steam's big enough that it had to go into Games like the rest of 'em. I'm still not sure if putting the swapfile on a separate partition from C makes any difference if it's physically just one drive.
Would anyone be able to tell me if it's worth buying an old 2 gig drive from a computer show for this purpose?
C: System
D: Stuff
E: More Stuff
E: NO
C: - Primary
D: - Secondary
wooo!
Fixed
C:/ = Master or S117, depends upon the network identity.
Also, the entire computer is simply called The Beast
c: winnt
d: winnt bakup both are 5 gigs although this drive is not really a backup.
e: 10 g's ten gig
My bot: file all are 80 gig drives.
d: empty1 not really epmty but....ya.
e: empty2 again not really empty.
f: installs has most if not all of my install programs, be it warez or reall stuff.

I am gona pick up a 250 gig or two for it when money flows. And I am gona put it in a 4u case.
C: OS
E: DATA
F: SWAP
It aint creative, but it gets the point across for nearly anyone who decides to look through my stuff.

Seriously tho, hda1 (C:) and hdf1 (H:) are NTFS, hda3 (D:) is fat32, and none of them have labels. /dev/evms/root is a striped RAID, no redundancy but lotsa space, and formatted with ReiserFS.
Normally you have 4 IDE channels. Cable of supporting ATAPI (CD, DVD, Burners) devices as well as HDDs.
So off the bat we have:
----Primary IDE--------Primary Master----------Primary Slave
----Secondary IDE----Secondary Master------Secondary Slave
So basically I can use those channels however I want. 4 HDDs, 2 HDDs and 2 ATAPI devices, 1 HDD, etc, etc, etc
But what happens if you want to add in more HDDs? Along comes a natty little device called an IDE Card (Also commonly known as RAID Cards). They come in a variety of styles, just like a graphics card and slots into your nearest free PCI slot. Some can support 2 channels. Some 4. My IDE Card supports 2 channels (That's 2 IDE ribbons, with the possibility of 2 HDDs on each ribbon. For a grand total for 4)
The only problem with IDE Cards is that they do not support ATAPI devices. No running of your DVD-Rom off the IDE card <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
This is what my setup looks like-
Motherboard:
----Primary IDE--------Primary Master----------Primary Slave
----Secondary IDE----Secondary Master------Secondary Slave
IDE Card:
----Primary IDE--------Primary Master----------Primary Slave
----Secondary IDE----Secondary Master------Secondary Slave
So I can hold 8 devices, but ATAPI devices only work on the 4 Motherboard IDE channels.
Where my drives go:
Motherboard:
----Primary IDE--------C:\ D:\ (Paritioned 40Gb)----------E:\
----Secondary IDE----DVD-Rom------F:\
IDE Card:
----Primary IDE--------G:\----------H:\
----Secondary IDE----I:\------J:\
My friend said to me once he had a very hard time getting his IDE Card working, he was swapping around HDDs and CD-Roms to try to get it to work... when I was putting my IDE Card in he said "There'll be only a certain way you can have your HDDs in, otherwise the IDE card won't work."
Got it the first time.
I think he had an old crap one...

C: 98 Drive
D: Backups
E: XP Drive
Now Its all under one. My comp's name is "Prometheus".
(Starsiege universe reference - my comp network description is "The First of Many Intelligent Machines")
But as a lowly 850 mhz, it has a while to go to get there. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

and my harddrives are all four years old and corrupting!
Ok, everything ABOVE the line is what your normally get with your PC. We'll just use my PC as an example.
So 3 HDD's and 1 DVD-ROM (4 Devices) is the MAXIMUM number of devices you can have on a normal stock standard PC.
I add in the IDE Card, and viola. My 4 devices is now a MAXIMUM of 8.
I hope that's what you wanted....
but where does the ide card plug into... ?
edit: i sound like an ****
