Brittany Spears looks like every other cookie-cutter girl today. No individuality, no thinking for yourself, no personality. You dress the same as your friends, talk the same, act the same. Thats the problem with music today, aside from outright sucking, is its more akin to Soviet propaganda. Tell enough gullible kids what they should care about (boyfriends/girlfriends, glamour, and fashion) and they become zombies.
Now, what would be interesting is if Brittany Spears released an album that encouraged kids to get to help their fellow man, be individuals, made them actually THINK about the lyrics they let their minds be saturated by.
Of course, much of the blame is on the parents for letting their kids get used to this crap. A little Handel or Mozart is not going to turn a kid into a Liberal Arts major <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Ok, I'm gonna hurt a lot of people and put a lot of them on defense mode right now, and I'm sure of it.
First off, Catpoker:
Out of your list, I see 4 "Original" Bands:
Aerosmith ACDC Red Hot Chilli Peppers Jimi Hendrix
Now, let me ask you- why do you include only rock people? Because you like that genre. I stated at the start of things, don't bash another genre just cause you don't like it.
Also, I'm pretty damned sick and tired of all of you bashing her for being like so many girls today. Let me ask you- how were girls BEFORE her? VERY different. She more or less made a generation, and thats something none of you have been able to do just yet, so I'd shut it.
Also, from everyone else, and ESPECIALLY Mr. Mojo:
99.99999999999 of the music you listen to can be appropriately described under "Been done, not original, but still sounds great". Now let me ask you- are all these bands complaining about life and those in it original? HELL NO! They've been doing that FOREVER! One of the few artists I truly respect is Jimi Hendrix, just because he did something that was so far in the future, and that nothing had EVER sounded like that before, and he invented a whole new genre of music on his own, AND it sounded damned good.
So many bands I hear now are so unoriginal, and inspire kids to be different when they in fact are just like everyone else who thinks the same way, because they think their deep because their depressed. I haven't heard a song very recently that involves hating life that doesn't include screaming. I'd LOVE to see some actually INTELLIGENT remarks out of you guys right now, cause most everything here was bashing of the modern day "popular, happy" person. And you know what? I may be going out on a limb here, but I'd rather be stupid as a freaking rock and happy, then the way I am now- intelligent, mature, and most of all, depressed. Happiness is the one thing everyone looks for in life, because they think whatever they want will give them eternal happiness, but it doesn't, so they turn to something else.
And if I offended you, don't respond by flaming, don't respond by saying something about my music tastes suck, because almost every band you mentioned I personally love, or at least like, but I just know deep down that they aren't too original. So if your offended, don't do like above- THINK. For a LONG time. Then get back to me what you think about.
ANOTHER musical appreciation thread? Look, get this right... There ARE NO BAD ARTISTS OUT THERE. There's only music you like and music you don't like.
What people are into is their own prerogative. I can dislike what other people are into, and I'll definitely try to see if they like what I do. But if they don't, then that's the way it goes. All that "listen to REAL music like _____" is utter shite.
I don't like Britney Spears. Why? Because I don't like her music. I could care less about the process. I could care less how it effects other people. It makes girls into zombies? What? It's not making ME into a zombie, so who cares?
This music appeals to lots of people out there... why is that? Don't think it's all corporate manufacturing and advertising and carefully formed images... there are reasons why they're that popular and why some indie artists aren't. It's life, who cares?
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Now, let me ask you- why do you include only rock people? Because you like that genre.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'd personally add the likes of Mozart and other classical music first. For more modern stuff I would shove people like the Beetles, Elvis and other artists for kickstarting what can be described as 'modern' music.
I'm personally tiring on all genres and am going back to older artists like Fear Factory, Led Zepplin and Pantera myself. Music coming out, like Britney Spears, is the divel that is making everything completely generic and killing music as a general whole. The same thing is even beginning in rock with this new generic rock band formula.
It may also be because a lot of landmark music has come out of punk/rock in general too. This isn't to say there haven't been important pop artists, Madonna should come to mind for example.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I stated at the start of things, don't bash another genre just cause you don't like it.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I like Dido, to an extent Carly Binding and a few other 'pop artists'. But the kind of generic, talentless crap that Britney (and others) represent that isn't even their music at all because it's essentially written by other people! It isn't bashing a genre as you like to think, it's bashing those who simply leech of others talents and have two C's to back them up only.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Also, I'm pretty damned sick and tired of all of you bashing her for being like so many girls today. Let me ask you- how were girls BEFORE her?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
This is such a badly made point that I almost burst out laughing. Plenty, how about you actually look at various magazines and such before Britney spears. She copies THOSE looks. In addition, it isn't about Britney being generic to girls around you, but others in the industry. In which she is very generic, but to the music industry she created the trend of general blonde bimbo looking girls with basically no musical talent becoming stars.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->VERY different. She more or less made a generation, and thats something none of you have been able to do just yet, so I'd shut it.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
You're reasoning is extremely weak and barely stands to scruitiny, I wouldn't be telling anyone to shut it with such weak logic myself <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->99.99999999999 of the music you listen to can be appropriately described under "Been done, not original, but still sounds great".<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Considering I listen to a great amount of Classical music, which is well before ANYTHING and was written by the greatest musicians that ever lived... I hardly think you've managed to pin things down. In addition to this, I do listen to a great number of the 'original' hard core rock bands and other older music. The stuff that is from today, I don't really like as much (see above).
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Now let me ask you- are all these bands complaining about life and those in it original? HELL NO! They've been doing that FOREVER!<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Which of course isn't all of rock itself. Now if we take a selection of the new random pop stars like Britney, Mandy Moore blah blah, we end up with the EXACT same stuff. Moreover, we end up with siimilar patterns that bind that music together FAR more than even the new generic rock (but it's getting there though, it's getting there).
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->One of the few artists I truly respect is Jimi Hendrix, just because he did something that was so far in the future, and that nothing had EVER sounded like that before, and he invented a whole new genre of music on his own, AND it sounded damned good.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Indeed.
I don't suppose there is a lot of classical writers on that list I'd imagine.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->So many bands I hear now are so unoriginal, and inspire kids to be different when they in fact are just like everyone else who thinks the same way, because they think their deep because their depressed.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I like Linkin Park, but more for the joke aspect of them actually. I like making up random goth album names and having the line "MORE ANGST THAN A LINKIN PARK CD" on it. It's handy music to have around though at times and is fairly alright (not good, but alright). At the very least, they play their own instruments, WRITE their own music and design their own music videos and the like. How much of that does the truely generic crap like Britney spears do? Perhaps you need to actually think about what the word 'Generic' really means and explore WHY many call this latest wave of pop drivel 'generic'.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I'd LOVE to see some actually INTELLIGENT remarks out of you guys right now, cause most everything here was bashing of the modern day "popular, happy" person.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
No, just the generic crap that is being released and sold. You shouldn't change the definition to suit whatever argument you are wanting to make incidently.
BTW, I don't remember the beetles, beach boys being paricularly angsty. Even more hardcore bands vary in their angst factor per CD, Deftones for example even criticised Korn for being too angsty (oddly). You clearly don't "listen to all genres" very much if you don't even have any idea of what the range in different genres is.
I suspect though that because ALL pop on the lines of Britney spears IS the same (due to the fact a limited number of outside writers write lyrics for ALL of them), you'd of course pigeon whole other genres as just having the same kind of music as the linkin park CD you listened to one day (so you could say you listen to a lot of genres!).
Obviously not the case.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I may be going out on a limb here, but I'd rather be stupid as a freaking rock and happy, then the way I am now- intelligent, mature, and most of all, depressed. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I don't need daft music to be happy O_o I listen to a lot of angsty stuff, but the very fact that I do what I like every single day (YAY RESEARCH!) and have moved away from home makes me very happy. Try it for yourself, it works.
I don't have a problem with generic music, I just have a problem with the generic "ArTIST". Those that don't write their own music, play instruments and just generally leech off the talent of others. Britney Spears is VERY definitely one of those.
May I suggest, that if you like Britney, or any other generic pop icon constructed by the record company behind it, please do download the albums in MP3 form instead of buying them.
Why? Because by supporting the biggest companies in the industry (Sony, BMG, Universal...) you are, in fact, supporting their rather cruel policies, that aim to exploit bands new to the industry by binding them to recording contracts that are favorable only to the company. Most of the time, the money earned by a newcomer band from album sales is somewhere around 0$, or they may even end up indebted to the record company. The only difference between MP3 piracy and what these labels do to bands is that while both are theft from a moral viewpoint, the latter is for some bizarre reasons not only legal, but an accepted business model as well.
Everyone has the right to like whatever music pleases them, but please do keep in mind that the current business model of the big record companies is so flawed, that it is no wonder they need a bullying/lobbying organization like the RIAA to keep themselves going.
Okay, the infomercial is over. As you were, forumites.

If you're on MTV there's a certain level of suck that is just applied to you by the nature of what you do. But one can still "like" music that sucks. The Beatles, for example, are and were pop crap, but I can still like some of their songs (especially the ones they cut Ringo out of).
Britney Spears is the reason I love the mute button.
I swear Much Music (aka Canadian MTV) is getting closer and closer to becoming Playboy TV with extra noise!
As far as music goes... There is a reason I like music from the 60's-80's. It's easier to sort through the crap and the classics. In ten more years, I'll be adding 90's music and in 20 more years from now, I'll add 00's music. Nothing sorts out crap better than time! (Though after these last couple of decades, that filter is really gonna need to be changed... <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> ) There is STILL alot of good music out there, but we are so bombarded with crap, it's impossible to find. One thing I miss that I always like in a song is an instrumental portion. Give me a good guitar riff. A good drum solo. That's my favorite music. No synthesizers. No shoddy singing. None of that crap. I blame radio and tv for that. They have to fit the "whole point of the lyrics" into that 3-4 minute time period so that a crappy 10 minute advertisment can fit in the schedule.
I think the Bare Naked Ladies said it best: "It's all been done." Not that that's a bad thing though.

If this album is so great, sorry, it's the people that get tiny little credits that deserve all the praise, not the icon shoved down your throats.
Thats something i don't get, why does someone get all the fame and credit for something she didn't play, write and barely perform? Yes, ok, i can admit that some people just don't want the fame (I know several session musicians that do it just for the sake of doing it, not to get famous), but it must be just downright insulting to have someone take credit for all your hard work. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> because none of her assistants (peeps who do everything) dont have breast implants and arent very attractive. sadly, thats all that really matters.

Much crap,

If this album is so great, sorry, it's the people that get tiny little credits that deserve all the praise, not the icon shoved down your throats.
Thats something i don't get, why does someone get all the fame and credit for something she didn't play, write and barely perform? Yes, ok, i can admit that some people just don't want the fame (I know several session musicians that do it just for the sake of doing it, not to get famous), but it must be just downright insulting to have someone take credit for all your hard work. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
because none of her assistants (peeps who do everything) dont have breast implants and arent very attractive. sadly, thats all that really matters.
