PCI slot.

Like an Ethernet card, or a sound card or a crappy video card.

any questions?

...

I have one. can one create partitions outa mostly full hard drives, or can you only make a new partition out of empty space? I'd theoretically like to put my windoze in its own partition like everyone suggests, but is that possible at this point, considering I have like 1 gig of free space?

My PC is called Tyrhelm.

C:\> 60GB partition for Win2K, named Drana.
D:\> 60GB partition for WinXPPro, named Gedrah.
E:\> 120GB storage drive, named Eruharn.

The PC itself is an AXP2800+ with 1GB DDR333 with high-performance DDR timing (so running at 666mhz) and a GF4MX on the motherboard.

Computer name: Gigolo (first one which hit me, previous comp was Toaster (cause it looked like one))

First disk:
C: Aku (Donald Duck in english)
D: Tupu (Huey)
E: Hupu (Dewey)
F: Lupu (Louie)
Second disk:
H: Iines (Daisey
I: Hessu (Goofy)

Figured out there shoulda be quite enough names for any amount of partitions. I could have partitioned the first 80G drive only into three partitions but then there would be no Louie or Donald, thats bad 'mmkay?

Why the goofy names?

Almost 18 months ago, after suffering with a stupid computer made by TINY,I bought my own parts and built one myself. I'm still using it now (not here, I am at school atm bored out of my skull). Given my nickname at the time,I dubbed the computer:
"Teh beast!"
This was also because at the time, this was one serious peice of computer- a GeForce 4 Ti 4600 at the heart of it.. (18 months ago remember, no OMG YOU NUB YOU SHOULD HAVE GOT A ATI!!!!1111oneoenoen)
I had intended to spraypaint it blood red but this...never happened.
As for the harddrives, I stuck with boring names:
C: Main
D: backup.
[end nonsensical post...]

Thought just hit me once. Firstly, theyre surprising names and useful at the same time. Donald is main disk and H&D&L are identical in each other and I dont have to refer to disks as "C, D, E etc." but only tell em to install it at Huey.
And I got bored seeing everywhere those normal names "XP, Stuff, Moviez, Music". This way I still remember better in which order they are and what goes where. And giving proper name to partition makes it become part of family

Yes you can, but only with Partition Magic or... or with some else super duper partition tool. Though I must give you a tiny little WARNING about Partition Magic: It can still mess up your whole system and other partitions (if you would have other partitions) in case something goes wrong with it. So you better make 1:1 backup from system before dividing full hard drive into several smaller ones.
Once already I've seen 120G hard drive being wiped clean. Same thing nearly happened to me too and now im too afraid to use it. So if its any way possible, put everything you got on computer to some friends Big drive and then format your own hard drive and make those partitions needed.
Windows XP (Pro only?) has excellent disk management software built-in. And its safe as anything.

Inf: Aren't the IDE-Card drives heavily bottlenecked by the PCI bandwidth? Thats what I've heard, dont know the nitty-gritty, but... eh..

Wouldn't you have been better off getting a Raid motherboard?

The C:\ is screwed so i need to take it out (hence why it's empty).

I feel so naked, i used to run three seperate drives, but the old one was too noisey, that had to go. I'm only gonna be left with ~60gb.

Back when my overclocked 800Mhz was the fastest thing on the block, I called it Bad Mother F*****. These days I call my 3 computers Balthasar, Melchior, and Casper (the three magi in reference to Neon Genesis Evangelion).

Generally I just name my partitions System, Data, and Swap; but they change around all the time and I probably reformat one of the 3 computers every month. Hooray for disk imaging; makes my job a lot easier.

Totally disagree.

Ran my Yamaha 8x8x24 CDBurner off of channel 2 of my Promise 100 ATA card for almost three years. Also ran my DVD drive off of it once when I needed the Secondary IDE for something.

Detected it just fine at boot up, always ran like a charm in Windows 2000, never had a bufferunderrun.

This old computer went like this:

Primary IDE: 15gig HD, 13 gig HD
Secondary IDE: DVD drive
ATA Card channel 1: 75 gig HD
ATA Card Channel 2: CDBurner

How big of a psupply you running inf? I ran all that on a dell 200 watt psupply for three years before it finally cratered

IIRC, I'm still using the ATA card to power the cdburner in my new computer, will check when I get home.

Back to the subject on hand, I call my computer Fast Chief, and I'll edit this post with my partitions when I get home as well.

Yeah, you can run ATAPI devices on IDE expansion cards. But not on RAID cards, which is what he has.

Theoretically putting the swapfile on a separate harddrive would improve performance, but you have to remember one thing. Most older smaller harddrives like that would likely be ATA33, and it would slow down any other devices on that IDE chain. So you'd want that drive on its own separate channel.

I had this as a background for a while. Just centered with a black backdrop. I am also using this homemade sound pack. You have to convert them all back to .wav before windows will recognise them. Whenever I get a criticial error HAL says "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

One 80 gig drive named "Local Disk".
