Do Your Dreams Seem More Real Than Reality?

Dreams are weird. As of recently, I have been having dreams almost everyday for the last month or so. Maybe it is because I think a lot and maybe it is because dreams are heightened when one has recently had a bad dose of insomnia? I find that I dream the most when I wake up and go back to bed, meh.

QUOTE (Burr @ Dec 1 2003, 04:20 PM )

I also go through the "Half awake/Half asleep stage" where I can still see the room, but I am dreaming that I am laying in my bed, and my mind plays tricks on me. Also, creepy.

Dude, that is so like me sometimes!!! Its like your half awake and the dreams are still happenning in your brain. As if you can still see but not think properly due to the things going in your mind at the moment.

Ever have those nights people, when you lay down and try to go to sleep, but can't. Every once in a while you'll look at the clock and two hours will have passed by in what seems like a couple minutes. Its like your mind transfers from the same train of thought to the next.

I would talk about some of my dreams, but I am to lazy to type to much.

I'm really enjoying reading the posts in this topic, so I figured I'd throw in a couple of my dreams

Really cool one was quite a while ago. I was standing atop this rusty red cliff overlooking a beautiful scenic landscape (picture a mix of LOtR and the scene at the end of FFVII with Red XIII). Only thing was, this cliff was actually a circular rocky platform about a foot in diameter, and about 300 feet off of the ground. Then I jump off.
I get that lurching feeling in my belly from when you fall suddenly - and I'm falling, except somewhat slower than I would expect. I'm being blinded by the sun when I glance at it, I can feel the wind rushing by my ears, and am aware of my entire body plummeting feet first into the earth. "The only way I'm going to survive is if I land on my feet" I think to myself (This seems funny now). Then as I get closer, I start speeding up... 50 feet, 25 feet, 10 feet. Blackness. I wake up.... And I'm on the floor beside my bed. The fall felt like it took about 30 seconds in my dream, but I couldn't have taken more than ~4 seconds to fall out of bed.

Another falling dream I have every couple of years and is really the only "nightmare" I've had. Honestly the night after I had this dream for the first time I was depressed for two days and didn't want to go to sleep.
I'm in the kitchen of this pretty nice house, y'know, white linoleum, oak cupboards, one of those little kitchen island thingies in the middle. Sunlight is streaming through the windows, and I can see a lush green like in a garden through them, except it's blurred like a photo out of focus. Then very suddenly I get this huge sense of fear overcoming me, like something terrible is going to happen. Then *flash of black*, I'm falling down what I can only descibe as a giant throat. I can see the walls of it, with rotting flesh and blood, and I'm afraid to try and grab onto the side to stop falling. And below is blackness. Am I going to starve to death falling? And I know that would be better than reaching the bottom.. *shudders* Gah, stupid nightmares.. No late night mexican food anymore - those are too vivid.

This goes under "ridiculous but amusing". A couple of times in my life, it seems that I've replayed scenes in my dreams that several years later are exactly played out in hollywood movies. The first one was "The Karate Kid", in that scene where they were having dinner. The next one was for some stupid chick flick my parents picked up one night - gah, I can't remember the name. Given how a lot of Hollywood's stuff is repetitive, cliched, etc. it can probably be chalked up as coincidence, but at the time I was watching the movie, the sense of deja vu was absolutely freaky.

And of course, the obligatory mecha dream - which is probably the closest I'll ever get. Maybe some of you remember that cartoon series that was on in the 90's, "The Bots Master"? Heh, anyway, me and my friends had a couple of those machines and were tearing it up in the field behind my house. Now that would be the ULTIMATE multi-player experience.

And you just don't want to hear about my dream with the roller coaster and hot women in red lace in the torch lit tropical/hawaiian/tiki themed paradise that somehow seemed to obviously be a Red Lobster. Anyone else have this dream?

Congratulations! You've read (or skipped to the bottom) of my overly long, rambling post! *gives you a cookie*

Also, something else creepy, sometimes I will dream that I am lying in my bed, but I KNOW that I am dreaming, and I KNOW I am still lying in my bed (in the real world), and then I can FORCE myself awake, by moving my legs or trying to fall off the bed, but it takes alot of effort to do it, almost like I am paralyzed...

I dream about reality way to much.

I heard once that dreams are just pictures that flash through your head while you sleep and have no meaning.

chemically, have you changed your diet lately?
a B6 vitamin deficiency makes you not dream clearly, but extra of it makes dreams extremely realistic, exciting, memorable and longer. i often take a few b6 supplement if i stay in on a saturday night and wake up sunday happy with my entertaining night.

I've had one of those dreams and i bloody hate them, Because my ones last for like 6 hours(Around the same time school goes for) even if it really only lasted 5 minutes. My dreams are very violent recently... i remember having flying dreams and the like... but now... now my dreams are... different.

Maybe i shouldn't post them here

I've been having some GREAT dreams lately actually. Not too realistic but...just really fun.

I'm going to try that vitamin B6 thing Zel mentioned.

    Also...

It's comforting to know that the other people who have reoccuring dreams don't have them often.

I find that i dream every single night, just like everyone else on a further note, but the difference is. I recall every single dream and hold it in my memory, i remember every detail when i wake-up. Granted over time some of the less radical ones have faded to the back of memory from non-use, but i've an extensive set of dreams that i remember and can talk about. Almost all of them that i remember for any period of time are the ones that almost seem more real, than the reality i wake up. On a level, ones sub-conscious almost considers your dreams to be actual experiences for oneself. So to a degree, what happens in your dream is almost an experience you can claim to have had, whether or not what happened or how it happened is pertanent(sp?) to the real world is rather irrelevant.

I have this sleep disorder called sleep paralysis. I can't move when I wake up and I hallucinate during that also being fully aware and my eyes being open. It isn't fun. I can avoid running into sleep paralysis by having a regular sleeping schedule. But today I messed it up by taking a nap. So tonight I will either fall into sleep paralysis right away or it is going to happen when I wake up. It's a very terrifying ordeal because the hallucinations are not usually pleasant.

I once dreamt that i was stuck on sentosa, and i was running from something through a very large underground carpark, and man it was so real.I felt so TIRED running, but i knew i had to keep running. Then i came to this weird-**** exit, this small opening in the wall, and i clambered through. Then i talked to this family, looked out at the sea,and thought about something....i think related to home...and i woke up.

Those running dreams are so annoying sometimes. You really feel as if your legs are gonna break if you keep running, you huff and puff, and you usally have to run for what seems like a long-**** time.

Add to the fact that in my dreams,im usually running from aliens, zombies,or mutated freaks, and it REALLY sucks after a while.

When I truly want something, like a playstation or something stupid. Sometimes in a single night I'll dream 15+ times that I just went out and bought one. And every time, I wake up and immediately question how real it was. Really depressing to find out it's never true tho :/

And I was hoping to beat ElectricSheep to this phenomena, but apparently I'm not alone.

I have dreams that I wake up from, but don't realize I've woken up from. I continue to act out the dream (in the REAL world) for up to a minute in most cases. Every single one of these is extremely terrifying in nature which adds to the heart pounding effect. This has happened to me at least 20 times in my life. Let me share one such dream with you all to let you know just how scary it can be.

In this particular dream. I'm lying on my bed doing something, I don't really remember what but that's not important. The important part is that I have in my possession a device that can "delete" things from the world. Cars, walls, computers, you name it, it can delete it. Well for some reason this device which closely resembles a tv remote gets lost in the covers and I roll on it or something in such a way that it's just randomly deleting things from my room.

Here's the part where I wake up for real but keep playing out the dream.

So I get up and start frantically looking through my bed sheets for this thing. I get the notion that it's deleting vital organs from my body. I can FEEL the sensation that my stomach is already missing. I know that if I don't find this thing soon that it WILL delete my heart and I will die right here and now. I continue searching through the sheets like a madman for about 30 seconds before I realize it was just a waking dream (this wasn't the first one so I was familiar with the experience). But that didn't help the extreme sense of death nearby from fading. and it didn't stop my heart from pumping so hard that I could hear it clearly with my inner ear.

Now I know that as far as dreams go that isn't so bad. People die in their dreams all the time. But I want to emphasize 1 thing. When you're in a dream, most of the emotions and thoughts you feel seem disconnected in some way. Like it's you watching yourself thinking/feeling these things. But this feeling of death was happening while I was awake. I can't describe just how real all of this seemed. But I can guarantee that there was absolutely none of that disconnected feeling at all. Not even a smidgen.

So yeah, the line between reality and fiction can easily be blurred

Thats exactly how I feel and each waking dream has been terrifying. Once after playing too much starcraft I had a waking dream at night and I was a marine with a squad and the marines were dieing and I ran away crying because I couldn't save them. My dad asked me what was wrong and I woke up completely. I've found that slapping yourself really hard can wake you completely from one of those. Also the feeling that my hands are twigs or giant is very scary.

Once I had this one dream where my wallet was stolen... by some dark, creepy people... and we had a massive struggle at first, then eventually I was in my bed, watching a guy just taking it and practically saying "Yoink" and leaving.. (It felt like) I woke up immediatly after that and rushed to my desk (with cold sweat on as I had some money in it!) and saw that it was there and was like.. "WTH was that all about, why did I run" and then later on remembered the dream...

lately my dreams (for the past year) have been in a story line (honestly) all about the same subject...

    ill describe the first dream:
I feel myself floating, I hear a voice in my ear saying 'wake up. Your reborn' My eyes fly open, im floating in this tank filled with a blue liquid. I get dumpedout of it and the dream sorta skips, Im laying on an operating table in some black jeans and no shirt on (and for some reason Im thinner then I am right now). Two doctors come in and congradulate me on my fast recovery, then one of them puts anesthetic over my mouth I wake up, and get a sharp as hell pain in my tmple, I raise my hand the doctor slaps it away, He hands me a mirror I have a chip in my right temple. they then shove me thru a door into a dark room, I take a seat and the huge screen flashes on and tells me how I am to become a secret police in the sity of Great Kardas (spans the entire earth). So Im put out ont he street, (think of this as an Uber real Cyber punk story) I walk into an ally, I cant remember anything, some dude grabs me and pushes a gun into the back of my neck and tells me to die (lotsa explictic language used). I prepare fort the worst then I hear a lady behind me say to drop the gun and leave me alone.

    Then I wake up.

i usually dont remember my dreams.. if i have them.. which i dont very often any more.. and that sucks cause i like having dreams.. even if they're bad ones. sitting there in black unconsciousness is lame. anyway.. i've had my share of crazy.. repeated.. thinking they were real dreams in my life.. but i just want to know one thing. when you're dreaming.. they're like thoughts.. only you're completely focused on them without any outside interferences like when you're just thinking while awake.. so the thoughts are more clear and played out.. but how can you FEEL things in your dreams? like when i touch stuff i can actually feel it's texture and how hot or cold or wet it is and stuff.. it's really wierd and doesn't seem right.

this is an old subject but it got me reading.. anyway.. a very long time ago .. like when i was between 5 and 9 yrs old or something.. i used to always have dreams about witches. one in particular happened like so: i'd be upstairs in the hallway.. and a witch (with green skin and a black robe) would come out of one of the rooms down the hall.. and i'd turn around and run down the hall, do a 180 degree turn around a little gate thing at the top of my stairs and jump (get air born) down the stairs. i'll be falling down the stairs and i'll be floating down really slowly.. and then right before i get to the bottom it's like time speeds up again and i fall at normal speed and land on my feet on the bottom.. and then the dream would usually fade into some other unremembered one. (it's like in the matrix when the camera slows down when someone jumps and then speeds up before they land.. ) except it wasnt because of the movie it happened.. cause this was way before the matrix came out.. or before i'd be able to understand half of that movie. there are several other dreams i used to continually have about witches and tornados.

i used to have dreams that i could fly too.. like everyone usually has.. but when i flew.. i couldn't control myself hardly at all.. it would usually be on a really dark night during a storm and i'd fly out the window.. but i'd move really slow and i wouldnt be able to control my movement almost at all.. like i was on strings or something.
