When it comes to Computer graphics and 3D in general, the large community surrounding CG on the internet will easily notice thievery so Don't do it!
It amazes me the stupidity of people who steal others artwork claiming it as their own and putting it in their demo reel for hire. How do these brainless ***holes expect to work for somebody once their reel gets accepted by a major company? The boss on their first day will ask em to build a complex model and they won't be able to make ****, if not a single polygon.
Think its only the stealer's problem? Your wrong, Companies lose money and time having to deal with idiots like this.
This is a strong reminder that you will easily be caught stealing work, especially in the CG field since everyone/ artists look out for each-other and their work.
Note This does not really have anything in common with model conversions or anything like that. This is simply stealing. For example, this is like taking the Skulk model from NS, manipulating it a bit by pulling polygons here and there, adding a few horns and giving it a new skin. THEN putting it in your demo reel for a major company like ID, Valve, and claiming to the hiring person at those companies that this is 100% your model when it is not!
The difference is that some people for instance made NS marine with a double jetpack for a custom model, but the plain white difference is being dumb enough to put that model into a portfolio to be hired at a Company.
So aslong as credit is put where it belongs, customizing models is not the same as what this forum thread in the link is discussing.

Is that the reason Raven no longer accepts intern jobs?

well some people seem to claim that he is the scapegoat for those leaked pictures that came out a while ago (no I won't go into any more detail about that, so don't worry mods )
And yes it sucks when good positions in the industry are screwed over for others because of some childish person who has no respect for intellectual property.
beware, and pay attention.
lol, I know some1 in finland who works from Sony, and if you try to download any of the sony files you get a viruse with it, theres 3 big files he keeps hidden, if you happen to hack him and dl it, you get a supper viruse that his friend made him, it'll kill your computer in pretty short time I believe, so basicly, dont steal from sony
Dispicable.
Yet it's so easy to do... no surprise dumbasses like him do it!
I keep all of my files on my HD and i only send pics, ever source files. Let that be a lesson to you all.
When people come up to you and ask you references (models, artwork), only send pics with watermarks.
but like you said. if these guy's can't even make a character set, what in hell do they think they'll be doing if the employer suckers for it. reading the "Getting Started" help files?
Yep...there was a time when i believed in power of friendly community...now u (we) have to be careful in choosing friends....very careful....
It is said..even in this life, where you are new person to the world, you meet stealers of your work....
Hell.....they went really looooooooooow..........they are even not worth of kicking their ****...waste of good boots on sh**....
(sorry 4 my english)
Some people
also it is exactly because of jerks that steal other people's work that my career is failing. i cannot get people to join my game making team as i am a programmer and i need artists to submit some work for me to use in my program and they are too afraid to give anything to me coz they think i will steal it and say it is my work. also i have shown people renders of my program and they say that those renders must be from 3dstudio Max or some other professional renderer and not from my program. they will not believe me and they keep calling me a liar and they ban me. i worked very hard on my engine to try to make it the most advanced game engine so far and so far not one artist has accepted to help me show it off properly. so anyway i'm totally fed up with this crap now so i'm going to a school that teaches 3d modelling so i can learn to make the entire game all by myself and maybe it's for the best.
This would be like someone buying the rare original of a famous painting done by Michelangelo, then selling it saying "THEY" made the picture.
CG fraud is a growing trend but since the entire CG community around the world is still quite small, many people know each other though work experience and by name. A good artist like Craig Mullins is world known and everyone and a person in charge of hiring at a company will most likely instantly know the person claiming that a famous art by Craig mullins is his creation will get in trouble.
Most of these theifs are well documented as being FREELANCE artists since they don't have to go sit down at the office with the boss looking over his back. They are mainly freelance because they use the privelage/chance of working from home to steal others people work off the web claiming it at their own since the boss may not know he is stealing. The boss thinks this guy is superb until he gets caught and its a mess.
I couldn't imagine one of these idiots getting hired in the office, his lead artist will ask this new recruit to model a dragon with intricate UV mapping, It will become clear he is a phony and untalented artist when he asks what a UV map is and has a single triangle on his screen after 10 hours of work. lol.
Maybe a veteran of 3D and the forum will be happy to create a simple character all boned and nice looking so that some ameutre can be educated. Since it is open to download from anyone if posted, it is unknown just who will be downloading your helpfull attachment for the wrong reasons.
You have seen it before
"this file has been downloaded 23 times" for example. Say download number 5 of 24 was a vulture theif who is untalented and manipultes the model for their own benifit to be hired.
This is 2/3 times the cause of CG theft.

People were like "oh thats so cool" and he was taking all the credit.
He was really lazy and never did any of his coursework, so on the day where we display all our artwork on our own sections of black card, I took a look at his, and all he'd put up were some sketches he'd done.
I browsed through them and saw some modified versions of my stuff, and even some of my own work.
I showed my friend the pictures, and asked him if he'd seen them before. He took one look at them and burst out laughing. He'd seen me drawing these pictures many times before, and we kindly informed our Art teacher, who just gave out a big *sigh*
I think he failed too
maybe I'm stupid here.... but if you made the site a FLASH site and he copied and pasted your content using screenshots.... wouldn't that mean that if you made a comparison between the two yours would obviously be the original since one take take screenshots of a flash site, but one cannot flashify a screenshot.
