where can i find official rmf files
Ive looked on the net, and searched the forum here for an hour, and i could not find the official maps in rmf format.

It would help me a lot to take a look at those for scale reference, because i know most of the maps from 2.0 by heart, and to see each room deconstructed in front of me would help quite a whole lot, i think, to get me started mapping at the right scale.

thanks!

Sorry to say it but the maps aren't open source.

Ah... this world would be even better if all NS maps were open source... except mine.

Yeap. But you can decompile the map, but the brushwork mess will make the map look like crap.

Altough the scale of the maps should stay the same.

unless you ask really really nicely for the .rmf's for
    educational purposes

only i dnt think your gona see any .rmf's
    of the official maps!!!

So much work has been put into each map i dont see
why anybody would just hand the source out

Make a room with different sized blocks, compile it and run around.

If nothing else you'll notice alot of the texture sets are 256x256 or a derivative (halved/quartered)
Make note of the use of those textures and how they are aligned and that should give you enough clues to the brush work 'scale' if you will.

@ blackpanther: in that case tell me the name of the decompiler, that is able to decompile ns maps.

joke. there is none. there are decompilers that can handle maps from other mods such like cs or even dod. but ns... just forget about it. and I also think this is good because ns mappers have much more work to do, it would unforgiveable to see ones work ripped from anybody.

    *** DECOMPILING IS EVIL ***

there's one, but only one guy has it. And he aint givin it out. He made it, and used it to decompile nancy.

i can decompile ns maps as well as other mods maps with about 98% of the map intact, and correct texures into a .map format but i think that it is wrong to do it so i wont tell anyone how / where to get it.

I agree, I believe decompiling is crossing the line. Mappers sit alone, in front of a screen, slaving away on their unique constructions for hours and hours and hours. They deserve a little respect.

exactly! Nobody gets the sources to my maps, that's for sure. If authers swant people to have the source, they will give it out. Decompilers are evil, except for rare instances like the Nancy thing.

I stick to my guns when I say decompiling is NOT the root of all evil. (Nor is money but that's off-topic. ) Decompilers are a great way to have a quick look at how things work. Decompiling is fine, do it. Who cares? It's not the decompiling that everyone is talking about. Everyone is talking about theft. A crowbar could be used to break into a house. Do I use a crowbar for other legal purposes? You bet. Does that make me a criminal or the crowbar illegal? No.

thanks for the feedback and the file, ill check it tonite. I didnt know that it was that sensitive to get those rmf files

Excuse my extreme noobletsness but if someone wants to rip off a map, if he knows the scale of objects, cant he just load up ns and outright copy the room and change em a bit? I am guessing for the lighting they would have maybe a problem but i dont know enough about mapping to guess how easy it would be to just be lame and copy someone elses work so ill just shut my claptrap for now and get to work

thanks again for help file and feedback

of course they could do that.. but people don't for a couple reasons:

    1. it would take to dam long.
    2. why would you want to??

as far as trying to outright copy by hand.... ask darkati, lazer, or wolfwings how long it took to do that WITH a well decompiled ns_nancy as a reference.

Also if you want a scale look at nshulls.txt in your sierra/half-life/ns/ folder, that will give you the dimensions of each unit.

When I was remaking Port Engine Room by hand, I encountered numerous problems. Every brush that was off by even one unit affected other brushes which would throw the entire thing off. When I finally got the decompile from Minsk, I found out I was 20 units off in every direction almost. O_o

It is how you use decompilers that matters. Use them for remaking a map that lost it's source or use them for copying others personal work. It's all about how you use it. Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Sad. True.

Remaking Nancy is an exception, but generally decompiling for the heck of it is, as I said, disrespectful to the hard work of the map's author. Still, just like anything else, there is no black-and-white on decompiling.

...I think this is about the 6th time I've seen the decompiling issue discussed on these boards, and I don't even hang around here that often.

Betcha they would'a been done faster with a well-decompiled reference. Unfortunately, the decompiler was a conveniently-timed attempt to debug some broken code, not the actual goal of my project. Oh well
