I compleatly agree there needs to be more teamwork oriented servers. General public play is lacking 2 things. Teamwork and communication. If a server has one or the other its a good server. If a server has both then it is a great server.
Right now i know of only one great server. That would be Tacical Gamer. you guys basicly described it. The server was public and then went private for a while. but now its open to the public again. Communication and teamwork are the things stressed be me and many other regulars. The alien chamber order does not matter, just so long as you ask(communication) and the team agrees(teamwork). There is almost always an admin present. There is a website that goes along with it that you can sign up for. Granted there can be a bad game or two, what server doesen't have those from time to time. If you had a bad experience there then please try again. The first time a played on COFR the commander droped nothing but IPs and told us all to rambo. I left dissapointed, but i came back later and found that it was actuly one of the best NS servers i could play on. If you tried Tg once and did not like it, Try again. You may be suprised.
I'm not here to try to sell or promote anything. Why would i. What whould i gain from it besides a reputation as a serpent-like salesmen. I am here because you described a server that already exists. It exists at www.tacticalgamer.com. I hope at least one person gives us a try. (more than just one time)
I just have to comment that locking oneself in an ivory tower will not benefit the community. Such a server might do well initially but will either become cliquish or will lose players it can ill afford to replace.
A better suggestion is to teach the newer players, since they will form the bulk of the NS playerbase. If all servers turn to subscription/member only then any remaining servers suffer, new players become less frequent, older players move on, and the community dies.

I think that's a rather grim outlook and a bit uninformed.
the problem is not so much problematic new players as it is "griefers", or "goof off players". while I may be wrong about that, I certainly have no problem with new players and think new players should be allowed on the reserved server. people who cause problems are those who know the game and got bored with it, then set out to do anything they can to disrupt the game.
this would be a more effective means of "tagging" and tracking problem players, and would keep the bored server-browser at bay as he wouldn't have access on some boring monday night without first signing up, etc, etc.. more trouble than it's worth, to him.

There's no problem with players who don't know how to play the game. That can be taught, and it often is, if given the right patient people/environment.
What is more difficult to convince someone to do, and what therefore is more rare and valued, is communicate effectively. The players I enjoy are those who know how to share what information they have, and listen for more information being given them. Whether they're the greatest of players, or asking why they can't use one movement chamber to get to another, I'm their fan as long as they can and do communicate. All else can be taught.
when it came to gaming, when australia was capped at 3G on cable a gaming network was created, 70% of Australias gaming community plays through this gaming network.
You need to download a program and creat an account to be able to play on the servers, you get banned your gone for good in short. Admins always on or easy to get in conntact with.
They do receive a very large amount of funding tho to keep it running, couple of months back they had a 200,00$ upgrade. It's run by a group of couple contracted on by one of australias biggest ISP's to run it all, may be you can show the idea to some of the ISP's in america see if any one would pick up on the idea <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Its grim, informed, and scientific. If you don't encourage new blood, you die. With people all locked up in servers hiding from the bulk of the community, the community itself will quickly die off.
Secondly, its kind of hard to realistically "tag" griefers since they can duplicate themselves, have a second (or more) identity used for griefing, etc. And if you're letting in new players, then why bother claiming to be an exclusive members only server?
No, the solution is just to have adequate admins on hand to boot non-compliant players. Locking a server won't help, and generally private servers generate distrust amongst those not in the server.

Currently, no, as there is no offical support for 2.0 on Steam. However on the release of 3.0 it will (obviously) migrate to Steam exclusivly.

To succeed, we need to integrate and adapt.
