oh and don't forget about Virtualdub.

QUOTE

VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit Windows platforms (95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

although it can't open asf or wmv files because Micro$oft is a jerk over their formats.

    foobar 2000
The best piece of software I have ever used is currently foobar 2000. It is an amazing audio player. It does absolutely everything right. Want support for every codec imaginable? check. Want native replaygain support? got it. Want to name your files in a consistent way? It's two clicks away. Want to lift tags out of a filename instead of typing them yourself? two clicks away.

Suppose for instance you get an album from a friend who names his files differently than you. Just open up the masstagger and hit rename files, and input whatever format you want. I personally use

CODE

%artist%\%album%\%artist% - %album% - %tracknumber% - %title%

(yes, those slashes will create directories for you when you run that on the file)

The display is COMPLETELY customizable. If you want to see what mine looks like, check it out here. If you want to set yours up like that, the formatting string is here.

I haven't even gotten into half of the awesome features of foobar2000, so if you are an audiophile with a big music library, go check it out.

    VLC
For video playing, check out VLC. So long as it isn't in a proprietary format, it will play anything that you throw at it. Just download a video that none of your other players will play? Think its corrupted? About to delete it in frustration? Give it to VLC and let it work its magic. If it doesn't play it, nothing will.

    OpenOffice
Want all the functionality of Microsoft Office with none of the bloat? Check out OpenOffice. It does everything MSOffice does, and does it better, and is free! (and there's no annoying paperclip).

Program I download as practically the first thing I do when sitting down at a Windows PC: PuTTY. I really can't work without it.

Other useful Windows stuff includes VNC, Firebird, Winamp, OpenOffice.org and wget. Interestingly, five out of the six programs I've chosen are open source. Beware, Microsoft!

I would like to again nominate EditPad Lite for being the perfect, unbloated replacement for Notepad.

There is also AIDA32, the perfect Utility in case you ever need to know exactly whats inside your computer.

And then there is Resource Hacker. For changing things.

For my notepad replacement, I'm using Programmers Notepad 2. Opens multiple files in tabs, regex searching, syntax highlighting, ability to collapse codeblocks. I also use it cause it's open source.

For my FTP client, I use FileZilla. Nothing really outstanding about it, I just use it cause it gets the job done and it's free and it's open source. Yeah, I'm a hippy.

My BT client is Azureus. You need Java to run it but it's a nice program. Gives me my download stats in a nice table and more importantly for me, multiple torrent's don't clutter up my taskbar. Did I mention it's open source?

    FTP: WS_ftp
Extremely simple interface, no bells and whistles, it gets done what it needs to do, but it does it well. Make sure you get the lite version though, thats the free one.

    Compressions:
DIVX! I don't have a link because the latest (free) versions have spyware, but I have the last free version which didn't contain spyware installer on my computer if anyone cares.

    Zipgenius
Zipgenius, handles zip, rar, ace, whatever you can imagine (even ISO files).

    Music:
    EAC
Tired of poor quality MP3 rips? Read this guide. I've ripped songs which contained pops on the original CD (?? why would they release it like that is beyond me) and this took it off when I ripped it. Quality is AWESOME. Very much superior to CDex.

    MP3 gain
Tired of songs you get that you can't hear or that are too loud? Adjust the decibel level with this.

Technically, its just a registry setting.

Both programs (and dozens other with the same option) just turn that registry setting on.

Want something that can do everything trillian can do ('cept good skinning, no skins here..) and is not bloated? Heres your answer. The installer is ~800kb, a whole 2mb less than trillian basic, and if the default functionalities arent enough for you, you can go to their site for many plugins to mix and match till you get it the way you want. You can also trim it down to make it smaller than the original size.

Someone mentioned Programmer's notepad 2 or something like that. I'll also mention jedit, a sweet java text editor that is language independant and has a crap load of plugins (whitespace handling and tabs are my fav). So far I havnt found a programming language that it doesnt know how to syntax hilight, collapsable code, etc, and its customizable up the wazoo.

anyone got a program that rips songs from CDs? I have one, but it only does the first 5 songs :\

I hate sonique 2! I just downloaded it. terrible. the whole POINT of sonique is the windowless interface :| and sonique 2 is basically a prettier winamp that's more processor intensive.

anyway, for my good program, Total Recorder is excellent for thwarting anti-downloader streaming music. Also pretty good for getting music from a minidisc back onto the computer. It basically records any sound that comes into the port that you designate the input. Plug anything - a radio, a minidisc, a cable coming from the headphone jack (for streaming audio) and it'll record!

Beware, the unregistered video only lets you record 30 seconds!

Oh yeah, for Bittorrent I've been using Burst! for a while now and I'm very happy with it, small/quick, keeps all torrents in one window, and minimizes to the tray. Only problem is that it refuses to limit uploads as much as I like (My cable company, while providing very fast internet, are real facists when it comes to upstream usage) so I'm also running NetLimiter which has a free trial version for download. It hides in the tray, can display all programs on your computer that are accessing the internet and allows you to limit their up or downstream usage separately, allowing me to limit all of my torrents to lower upstream usage (feel free to flame if you're a fanatic anti-leecher).

This is my favorite thread, I'm a sucker for great software.

Edit: Marik, whats the story with Eclipse? I'll probably be working on a somewhat large java project soon and I was thinking about Eclipse but someone said it was bloaty (albeit with nice features... which sounds contradicting). Do you do smaller projects in jedit and larger ones in eclipse? How do you use both?

Most of you have already posted some good quality programs, but heres some more.

xchat, once only avalible for Linux is now avalible for all platforms. It's a very sleek and customizable client it also uses Perl for scripting.

LiteStep, is a nice shell replacement that is skinnable, and very efficent.

Oh and Firebird is hypno tested and approved.
