<div class="IPBDescription">I Want My Dad To Learn... But How ?</div> I've been meaning to make this topic for a few days now but kept
forgetting, so here it is.
Whats your parent(s) take on the Pc's, computers, the internet in
general etc? I've always wanted my Dad to get into gaming and
try the new consoles but it's quite difficult to get him to try them.
Many years ago, when I got my Amstrad CPC 464, he'd play
something called Tai-Pang and he used to spend hours on it.
A few years ago he'd try "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" on the
Dreamcast... he'd never actually hold the pad but he'd join in on
the basics of the game whilst my sister did the button work
for him.
So now, 3 or so years after the Dreamcast incident, i want him
to learn about using a Pc. Get him on the Internet and learning the
basics (before long I hope to have him humming 'badger badger badger'.)
But when I last asked him if he was interested he simply replyed about
how complicated it looked and how little time he had.
I think that if he simply sat down at my Comp for an hour or so, he'd be
fine and when he got more used to the way the mouse and keyboard work
then I could get him onto Half-Life for some Head-Crab fun <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> .
So... whats YOUR *points finger* story? Do your parents use the
Pc at all? If so.... what for? Do they venture into the realms of online
gaming? Etc etc.

About 7 years ago, he used to play games... the ancient ones - Doom, Duke Nukem, etc. Now, he stopped.
As for my mom, she doesn't know anything; she hasn't played games or anything.
My mom is an Animal Behavior Psychology prof (requiring her to know atleast basics of alot of things)
My dad needless to say is currently working on getting all his systems running linux (all like 10 computers) and dosn't play any games out side of things like freecell.
My mom on the other hand is decently clueless when it comes to anything outside of her requirements for work, and a few in that (She can program in basic, Write Word Docs, Use Exel, Quicken, TaxCut)
I have been slowely teaching her/getting her hooked on different things.
One of my mom's things is that she realy like musics (and she will listen to ANYTHING).
I have ripped CDs for her (never showed her how... should have)
My Bro and I bough/set up a 4.1 suround sound system (in a TINY office <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->) for her (I have walked her through how to fix em once or twice over the phone)
All in all, she is decently tech savie, however she is REALY horrible at tacking directions (she gets **** at me <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> specialy when I tell her to do something that is above her head and I can't readily explain what she is doing, simply that I wana know the results so I can figgure out EXACTLY what borked and then explain is)
My Crowning achivement was Getting her to download/install/setup WinAmp5.
She now has WinAmp5 up and running and usses it for internet Radio (I turned her on to Digitaly Imported for when there are not that many people in the building <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)
So yah, I got is sorta easy, both my parents are decently tech savy (heck, I even walked her through downlaoading/installing putty so she could check my Email for me so I could get a time out of one of my msgs)
My dad looks up stuff on the internet. He still uses the two finger search and push typing method.
My grandpa plays solitaire on his computer.
That is all.
My Mom occasionally listens to some of the music I have on my computer because I'm into classic rock, so it's stuff she grew up with. She checks her e-mail and browses the web too, but Super Mario Brothers on my SNES is about as advanced as she gets gamewise. She really can't deal with the third dimension in her games.
However when my dad was unemployed for a bit he completed all the resident evil games on the PS, along with duke nukem and doom etc.
Never got near my PS while he was unemployed tbh
When resident evil 3 came out I went up the shops to get it the day it came out but the copy was b0rked and I didn't have time to go replace it cos of work that evening and it was also a saturday so that ment i wouldn't have been able to sort it until monday.
Got home from work 5 hours later to find my dad had been up town and changed it over and completed it already <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Though someone I'm living with has been using computers for the last 30 years so ^^. Someone I can talk to NS about. He's more into it that me.
My mom knows the very basics of computer, but my dad knows quite a bit.
Mom can do email and quickbooks... thats all. Neither of them really like computers.
my mum, well shes a general major chatter in the australian online chat called COGS. everyone loves her and knows her and me, they love her. shes pretty cool.. though she knows nothing about fixing, improving (hell she has win 98 and refuses to change,, at least my dad has win xp) she mostly chats and emails and junk,

My mum(or mom..) on the otherhand is totaly illeterate. she can't even use a vcr for christ sakes!
my dad is 58 and plays DoD, CoD and BF1942.

I can think of only one type of site with farmyard animals.
Well, my father can browse the internet, but my mother just sort of seizes up when confronted with technology.
My mom can use the internet.
My step-dad can use auto-cad and stuff like that for work, as well as use the internet.
My step-mom can use the internet and can play games but she sucks
Then when she occasionally watches me playing some kind of game she says things like "Wow how can you do this stuff, you're moving that mouse too fast for it's own good! Think of the poor mouse! I'd throw up almost instantly, it makes me so dizzy! You're a strange guy..."
Love my mom <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
He tried to use the internet to look for a car, with our help, when I realised how much of a nub he is. His man problem was cutting and pasting. He understood the basic concept of what it did, he just couldn't get the hang of where to click, and which mouse button to use. Every time we told him to click something he always said "which mouse button" and we were like "OMG LEFT BUTTON YOU NUB!". He also didn't understand the difference between pressing the right button over a text field (so he could paste) and right-clicking anywhere else on the screen....
My mum thinks she's computer literate, but she isn't. She's like a learner driver who's been driving for 2 years and think's that qualifies her to drive like a maniac. In computer terms this means that she runs our virus checker at least once, if not twice a day without fail (and it takes an hour to run because of all the crap she never deletes), and yet manages to get every single piece of spyware known to mankind. Can't say it's entirely her fault considering the amount of "The Sims" related junk my sister downloads onto there...
My mum is computer illiterate.
My wife has the power of google also, and has brought stuff off the net. She also likes to sign me up to recieving spam mail.
