Over the past month (3 weeks 3 days to be exact)
i've developed a huge passion for games that involve
as many people as possible working together.
Ghost Recon with a bunch of friends, TeamSpeak/Roger Wilco,
and the hardest difficulty settings on the "Red Square" map
is amazing stuff.
<img src='http://www.lowstress.co.uk/images/gallery/ghost-recon.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Day Of Defeat with 5 of your clan mates on one team, 5 on the other,
and every single one of you on TeamSpeak singing about grenades....rocks.
<img src='http://www.lowstress.co.uk/images/gallery/dod-rush.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
But PlanetSide, hundreds (literally!) of your team-mates, storming
up the hill to conquer a near-by air-tower and move onto the AMP
Station which lies beyond..... is awesome!
<img src='http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pete.taylor2/PlanetSide/PSScreenShot0078.JPG' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
<img src='http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pete.taylor2/PlanetSide/PSScreenShot0080.JPG' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
What other games do you boys and girls play that involve lots and lots
of people working together?
<a href='http://forums.lowstress.co.uk' target='_blank'>We</a> have a Natural-Selection night planned for either Sunday
or next Wednesday (which is why I haven't mentioned my beloved Natural-
Selection) so PM me if you'd like to join in as the server will be passworded.

The thing to understand is, each continent (sub-world) has a limit on how many people from each of the three Factions may be on it at a given time. Usually this runs between 150-300.
Stop. Imagine that. 300 people PER TEAM in <b>one</b> area. It's impressive as hell.. we got together 300 Vanu Sovs to invade a given continent, and worked in unison. 300 people HARTing in (drop-podding) next to ONE base. Or gathering off to the side of one, and ALL moving to take a given base.
It was gruesome.
Braveheart material, a *wave* of purple essentially washing over, into, and through a base where maybe 20-50 New Conglomerate fighters at MOST were trying to defend. Magriders and MAXes filling the periphery, five cannons per base turret blasting them to smithereens. A single light armor popping the door open for a column of FIFTY MAXes to charge through. Snipers picking off those trying to flee. Galaxies (gigantic troop transport jets) landing ALL around a base to pick up troops and carry them to the next base, still not having enough room, forcing people to walk or HOPE for an empty seat in a Sunderer, or Magrider.
True, it doesn't happen often, and takes a lot of coordination... but when it does, it's absolutely staggering to watch, and terror-inducing to experience if you're the defender.
PS: Err... tomorrow, really.
I myself have been considering getting this...its looking enticing.
Oh, and those second two screenshots are from Planetside. Looks like low-detail settings, as with my card I had much nicer textures... ground, tower, and equipping station.
Oh, and don't bother getting Core Combat. It adds VERY little, and costs too much for what it slaps in. Essentially an underground maze, a few lackluster weapons, and a couple of decent vehicles that can ONLY be re-armed from 'geowarp points', of which there are two or more on each continent, only one of which is open at a given time.
(edit) And don't even try to compare Tribes 2 to PlanetSide. T2 sucks after what Sierra did to it... making light armors ski faster than the Wildcat grav cycle, screwing up the weapons... bah. PlanetSide is also filled with a LOT less smacktards as a whole, as you can choose to just go off and do your own thing if nothing else. The most annoying part is AFK squadmates, and even then it's not TOO bad. (/edit)
Even though I am against Pay to Play, a 30 day trial might convince me otherwise...the game sounds really fun and braveheart-like.
I have an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128bm video card and a 2ghz processor and It still ran like crap. Maybee after I get my 1gb or RAM It will work better.
Is it anything like the original Tribes? If so, I'd just throw it out a few weeks later. Too many weird servers, too much cheating, too many different gametypes, too much confusing crap. Not to mention that I was continually lost. I never knew what was going on in that game, and I never really saw any impressively huge servers. And CTF can only be interesting for so long.
there is no longer a 30 day trial, but there is a 7 day one from fileplanet... download from fileplanet and you can play for 7 days without even giving them your credit card... after that, though, you have to pay...
what annoys ME about that is, if you like the game and decide you want to pay, you can't just enter your credit card online and have your account reactivated immediately -- no, sir -- you have to physically go out and buy the game in a box, even though you already have it installed... and so you have to pay the full retail price, instead of paying less money for like a 90 day subscription like I want to...
also funny is that if you want to buy a 90 day game card online, you pay a decent price, but they charge you SIX TO TEN dollars for delivery... of a plastic card, which you don't even need -- you only need the number on it which they could so easily e-mail you or activate automatically...
yeah, they're not very ergonomic or economical <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I had JUST made CR1 with my Tank Regiment when I got a command-speak cry from the far side of the world, they needed help and now.
We drove as fast as we could to get through the gates to the continent about to fall, ended up getting 6 Vanguard tanks (that's 12 guys) over to the last base on the continent just as it was about to fall.
There is a hell of a lot of damage 6 120mm guns can do <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->. The base was quiet in a little less than 10 minutes.
Anyone for a big game of GR sometime? Huge co-op I mean?
Prices are:
<b>Monthly</b>: $12.95
<b>90-days</b>: $39.99
than happy with the Monthly fee. I've simply cut back on a few other
little non-essentials.
The amount of hours i've racked up on PlanetSide is only comparable
to that of Perfect Dark on the good old Nintendo 64. I've had 2/3
hours of immense fun practically every night for the past month.
I've flown aircraft, drove tanks, stabbed someone in the face with a
pulsating knife and been part of many many large scale assaults on
various continents..... loved every single second of it.
Yes my screenshots are fairly low detail, my system is need of some
faster ram, and to be honest I haven't even <b>tried</b> nudging the
details up to make it look nicer. I've got used to whatever the default
settings are.
My system is:
Windows XP Pro
80 Gig HardDrive
GeForce FX 5600 (256 DDR from MSI)
XP 2800 (2.25 ghz)
1 Gig of 2100 DDR Ram.
One of the guys I play with (Porta69) has practically the same system
but with DDR 400 and he has bullet holes, mushrooms, detailed textures
etc. So its not THAT bad for system requirements. (FarCry demo seems
to hate my system, the fps there are dire.)
My advice is to try the 30 day / 7 day trial.... oh and post some more games
that require mass co-ordination. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
maybe you used to be able to, but I've tried and tried and can't find a way to do it from their website... the closest thing I could find was going to the store and finding the ability to buy a retail copy of the game in a box, or buy a game card, both of which they'd have to send me... I even emailed them about it, and they told me that I'd have to buy a new retail copy if I wanted to keep playing... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
but if the staffer was wrong and you can find a link through which I could add time to my subscription directly, I'd be much obliged <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Gawddamn you! Now I HAVE to download the 7day-trail.
Ok PS bash done.

Same. Plus, it just got... stagnant after a while. Same old same old (partly because every base is the same. Cookie cutter assault: AMS, some tanks, crap like that)

The reason you didn't like it was because you only gave it a few weeks. Too much confusing crap? You never knew what was going on? Looks like someone didn't give the game a chance, and tossed it just because it wasn't instantly accesable.

Unfortunately I have no-where to host, so if anyone would be kind enough, I can put up a nice picture of a prowler tank-column. It's not the biggest i've seen, but it's the biggest I have a screenie of <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Much of your enjoyment in PS relies on finding a good outfit. Find a good outfit, and you will enjoy the game more.
A group of 20 tanks, supported by fighters, dive bombers, infantry, artillery, and naval bombardment by destroyers is an impressive sight. Each side also has a command structure that is all players, so players devise the stategy, and pass it down to other player commanders to carry out as they see fit.
Plus all the vets are very nice to newbie's. When I started my free trial, the game lets everyone know you are new with a different colored tag. Like 6 different squads(like guilds or clans in other games) asked me to join, and i didn't even know how to play the game!
There were very few smacktards, everyone was there to win and have a good time. I would definately suggest it to anyone who likes to see teamwork on a large scale.
PS actually sounds like a futuristic WW2 online. I'm gonna check it out.
No truer words have been spoken. That was my main complain about planetside. I buy MMORPGs because of the persistant world, and Planetside clearly has none. Its agonizingly frustrating to go into an enemy continent with your outfit, crack some skulls and kick some ****, log off to eat dinner. You come back an hour later, the enemy has regained the territory you spent 6 hours trying to get. I dont see how anyone can enjoy the game, because it happens ALL the time.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I will admit, the short time I played PS it was fun, but I don't see the need to pay 12 dollars a month for a game with a graphical quality that of quake 2, yet it requirs 700+ mb of ram to run "decent"<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Before you even think about playing PS, you need 512MB+ of RAM. A gig is pretty much required to keep the game running smoothly in large battles. And thats all sony's fault. The idiots refuse to use occlusion in the game. Meaning, say on the other side of a wall theres 10000 tanks and people. When you look towards that wall, PS renders them despite the fact you cant see them. Just take a look towards a base during a big battle and you'll see.

Yup. Same old same old. Really isnt much to spice the game up.
I highly recommend you try out the 30-day trial before getting the game. I think theyre still doing the 30 day one. If you enjoy it after that time, great. But ill have to question your sanity.
I was a big planetside basher at the beginning, because I really had no clue how to play. Now that I understand the mechanics more, I like it... I'd probably give it, say, an 8 out of 10 anyway...

All my system specs are at least one level below that, and I've never played anything that wasn't ratcheted up to the max in terms of graphics.
Sound, of course, is another issue...
If it takes more than a month to start having fun, the game is crap, because I have other games I could be playing where I could be having fun RIGHT NOW.
