The Suffering

I want my mommy....
Wow, i just rented The Suffering on Ps2...and lets just say i was **** my pants in the first 2 minutes....

It's starts out as you going into a prison, in deathrow, and all a sudden the prison shakes and all hell breaks loose. Your cellmates get taken out one by one while your cell busts open. All the cells open and then as you go into them you see what had happened to your cellmates...one was placed on a wall (nailed...) while others are nowhere to be found, just traces of blood. You run to the cell door where the guard was and he runs up to tell you that he think they're afraid of the light..then BOOM a knife straight the head and he gets pulled up in the rafters. Call me a puss but i couldn't play this game without shaking because of the darkness, screaming, and music. The first encounter you have with a creature is when your walking down a corrider and you hear blades scraping...you look forward in time to see sparks and him scraping his blades and boom he's sprinting at you.

This game is excellent, this is much scarier then RE or Silent Hill. I have literally never played a game in which i have been to frightned in my life.

    Dito.

The Suffering seems very scary, as I have seen some videos. At first I thought it would be like Project Eden... but no no.

I might try it out sometime, if I have the guts.

Someone should make a game that you can't turn off until you beat it, that would rule. Oh wait it's called FF XI....

Hmm, i've heard a bit about this game, but based on the trailer it doesn't look that scary, but i might as well give it a rent some time.

One bit in the trailer (The E3 trailer, if anyone's wondering) was cool, in the bathroom where suddenly loads of monsters appear.

I don't find most of these games "scary" so much as I do "disturbing", or at least Silent Hill disturbs me... Biohazard (RE) relies too much on jump scares, I think.

That said, I'm really looking forward to getting The Suffering, but I'm at a toss-up as to whether to get that, or Fatal Frame II first. @.@

the atmosphere is what gets you..you'll just like me walking down a corrider minding your own business and then out of nowhere you'll see a shadowly figure run across into a cell..and when you get there..theres no one...

the one part that i seriously almost **** my pants was when i was looking at a security camera and it was first looking at the electric chair and then it turned to the room i was in and i showed me surrounded but hordes of monsters closing in on me..i freak out and press the button and start firing my pistol everywhere only to find that nothing is there..

I'm telling ya..im rarely frightened but this game...just wow...if your curious just rent and see..then you'll know what i mean..

For God's sake (any god that's good with you, or whatever), dont'! I tried Undying because I'd seen so many people rave about how scary and good it is. Well, here's the truth:

For whatever amount of cash (or its electronic equivalent) you shell for Undying, what you get is a mediocre FPS with respawning enemies and some horror elements scattered few and far between. There aren't that many monster types either, so be prepared to encounter hordes of howlers that will either rip you apart or bore you to death. There are a few clever ideas, like the use of "scrying" ability to see into the past, and sometimes to see a few disturbing things as well, but the whole game reeks of eau de mass-produced FPS. I failed to locate anything scary in the whole game.

Of all the horror games I've played, Silent Hill 2 takes the cake easily. It doesn't have so much classic silly occult references as SH and SH3, and the storyline is actually astoundingly complex. In fact, I'm greatly vexed now that I didn't stop to analyze the plot as it uncovered when I played it through the first time. I just took everything at a face value. If I'd performed a decent plot analysis when I had a go at it the first time, the game would probably have disturbed me a lot more than it did, which wasn't exactly little to begin with. The staying power of the game's creeping horror is also proved by the fact that when I played it through for the third time, I still jumped at the final scene, even though I already knew what was going to happen. I guess no lights in the room and the volume turned up just amplified the mood. Anyway, the monster rape scenes are probably the most disturbing material in any game ever - yeah, even if Custer's Revenge on Atari 2600 is included.

I haven't tried The Suffering, mainly because I do not own a console of any kind. I tried to look for a PC release date, but came up with zilch. When I took a look at the game's official site, I had a feeling that I'd like the setting of the game very much, but that it might be populated with too many monsters to my liking. You see, I believe that the less monsters and more variety in them a horror game throws at you, the more they can scare. That's why the Resident Evil series didn't shock or scare me in any way, except for the traumatic experiences with the gigantic spiders, but that's just because I'm a pathological arachnophobiac. Heck, if Super Mario Sunshine had spiders I'd be scared.

    I'd disagree.

Many people (excluding me) have been scared by System Shock 2 and that hardly had a small amount of enemys in it. (Although I think it was the way they were used)

Or The Thing which hardly has a shortage of nastys. (Although these two games have hardly scared me, I must be immune or something....)

*: When I say scary, I mean atmosphereic scary, as in scary for other people. It takes a lot, and I mean a lot, to scare me.

Oh yes, System Shock 2 was creepy, but it had more to do with the general feeling than the monsters. Granted, the sound design for the hybrids was brilliant, but the ghostly visions and the general feeling of being very, very alone contributed much more to the creepiness factor than the hordes of enemies. I especially liked the ghost image of the guy who committed suicide.

But on the general level, I still believe that few and more varied monsters tailored to fit the situation would be much more scary than hordes of generic monsters. As an example, imagine yourself in a generic, mouldy gothic haunted mansion. Now imagine every room has a horde of raving lunatic zombies out for your life and limbs. And brains too, probably. Not very scary, methinks. Now, instead of the zombies, imagine a new kind of monster hiding in every room. Some of them are impervious to bullets, or just phantasms that disappear if the player chooses to ignore their attacks, or disappear after doing some bodily harm. Some of them are very real indeed and have to be gunned down or otherwise reduced to ground beef/ashes/dust. Wouldn't a setting where you never know what the game's going to throw at you and can never guess beforehand if the monster is real or just a figment of your imagination be a whole lot more disturbing than hearing "grrrrroan"-sounds coming from the drawing room and instantly thinking "Oh bugger me, more zombies/werewolves/gremlins/koopas. Wheres muh 12-gauge?"?

I'm suprised no one thinks of The Thing when Surival Horror comes up. That game is one of the best thought out horror games ever created. (Although the "Any one of my team could be it....") is also a major part.

But your team can freak out and commit suicide or turning a corner and putting your flashlight on to see a set of Toilet cubicles encased in blood. (Cunningly that bit is dark so usually you have your torch on making it seem more sinister.)
