The only change needed to increase the suspense is to make it less predictable in my opinion. Everything is there already but the dangers are mostly confined to restricted areas and once you learn the patterns it's no longer a problem.

In other games things despawn mostly for performance reasons. In a sim like Subnautica i expect to be able to find/drop something and then be able to return later and pick it up where i left it without it despawning.
