How about lowering the damage and instead adding a paralysis effect per the PDA database? You could be slowed to move 50 percent more slowly, which could make coming back up for oxygen and escaping from stalkers tricky.

My suggestion? Get a solid state drive. It greatly reduces Subnautica's huge load times.
