Watch Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo(The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) it is one of the best movies out atm. (<a href="http://animesuki.rut.org/series.php/1025.html" target="_blank">Link</a>)
    I throughly enjoyed it.

I rarely keep track of this thread, I only noticed this post now.

I'm 18, started watching ~2 years ago. (list is quite a bit longer by now, but I'm getting more into manga and I'm too lazy to update)

    mkay, I give.

I havn't watched TV (of any sort) for over a year now (stopped downloading anime and canceled my Netflix subscription).

Can some one recommend me something? Basically I am just looking for something relatively mindless and fun.

    Guns, explosions, comedy, fan service...

Hopefully new (I haven't watched any anime in a while, but before then I was kinda obsessive).

    /me bows out.

    thanks <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Oh, and if some one can recommend something honestly good as well that has come out recently (good story, plot, characters, and preferably action), it would be rather appreciated.

    Thanks <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    /me wanders off to sleep.

Yes: <b>uninstall all packs, install CCCP pack</b> (comes with Media Player Classic, though I'm not sure if the MPC that is packaged with it is the latest one).

The sheer volume of codecs it sh*ts into your computer is a little intimidating, but it's worth it when MPC becomes a skeleton key for video play... especially with subtitles.

I felt much the same for a long time, but recently (couple months ago) fell back in love with anime. I missed so much good crap. I'll try to suggest recent (2006ish) shows.

Guns, explosions: <b>Black Lagoon.</b> Definitely Black Lagoon. Basically a gun fetish made into a show. Modern day smugglers-slash-pirates blasting everything, ex-mil Russian mafia, Triads, Yakuza, psychos, psycho children, psycho chicks, neo-nazis... Two seasons of 12ep each, 24 episodes of people blasting each other. It's a terrible indulgence. <a href="http://everyanime.com/index.php?page=Content/Media/Anime.php" target="_blank">EveryAnime</a> is a stable mirror for the whole series. <b>edit</b>: whoops, that mirror might be busted after all :/

Comedy: I found that best in <b>Ouran High School Host Club</b>, and <b>The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya</b>. The first is about a crossdressing high school girl who is indebted to a club of boys. Hilarity quite obviously ensues. The second is about a girl obsessed with the odd and supernatural: bigfoot, time travel, aliens. She's having trouble finding them (der) and ends up founding a club devoted to discovering these mysteries. <b>Now, let me note </b>that TMHS can be hard to follow and quite odd at times, and the episodes are out of order (intentionally). But it's all worth it: the narrator of the story is one of the best written characters in any recent anime, in my opinion, with an excellent and very natural internal dialogue that's really the heart of the show.

<!--QuoteBegin-Thansal+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Thansal)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Oh, and if some one can recommend something honestly good as well that has come out recently (good story, plot, characters, and preferably action), it would be rather appreciated.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Mind blowing: <b>Mind Game</b>. This was a hot tip for me. I snatched this one up by torrent, with no expectations or even an idea of what it was about.. and was absolutely FLOORED. Keep in mind I've watched roughly 95% of all the positively-rated movies released in the past 10 years (sad, isn't it?) when I say that Mind Game effortlessly made its way onto my top 10 list of all films ever. It's hard to explain in detail, but to put it simply, it's 1) amazingly artistic, 2) hilarious, 3) action packed, 4) inspiring, 5) thought-provoking, and 6) just so <i>human</i>.. before this movie, even having watched all of Miyazaki's works, I had no idea this kind of emotion and feeling could be rendered in an animated film. Again, I was 1-hit KO'ed, FLAWLESS VICTORY, by this movie.

I'm with you, manga rocks. You should check out <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negima" target="_blank">Negima!</a>, probably the best manga I have ever read. The anime compared to it, not so good. They disregard most of the personalities of the characters and change the events around in the anime. Also the voices in english for the Negima! anime are just...not fitting.

Mind game is good. Its not mind blowing or life changing but the story was good and the visuals work for the slightly surrealist tone of the story. Might get around to watching Ghost in the Shell Solid State Society tomorrow if I don't go out.

    hmmm, thanks Zig.

I think I watched the first few eps of Black Lagoon a little while back.. It didn't catch me. But it might jsut be b/c I still wasn't really into watching anime at the time..

    I will try it again.

I will also look into Mind Game.

Just on sorta random notes I decided to grab the first few eps of a couple different series:
Claymore looks interesting. Kinda reminds me of Blood in terms of style and concept. (I am really loving the art, and the voice actor for Claire sounds awesome)

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann seems amusing. Not necessarily good, but amusing. Again I like the art style.

Oh, and my solution to Codecs?

    Don't download anything that isn't in xvid. Kinda simple <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

That works if you're watching stuff that is already released en-masse by subbing groups. If you're following a show that's currently airing in Japan, and being subbed as fast as possible by different groups, you pretty much have to go with the flow and be ready to view whatever format is coming at you.

That is, unless you're willing to wait until it's released in an edible format, some days/weeks late. I'm definitely not. I get ###### if I have to wait more than a couple days after it's aired..

CCCP and MPC are epic win. Imagine being able to play 95% of all video files from your media player without having to download any additional players or codecs and hoping they work correctly. It is essentially a must-have for anyone watching anime using their computer.

It's basically the same thing as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_hina" target="_blank">Love Hina</a>. Love Hina won manga of the year so tell me how it could be bad. Taking exceptions such as being a rip off would be a reason, but it's still funny. And have you ever read it?

Anyways, Negima is basically a total cliche. But hell, Cliche's are popular ;D
Anyways, I did however prefer the manga over the anime.

For instance, another meandering series somewhat on the same lines as Love Hina (But less blunt about the fan service)
    Pastel is kinda fun.

    Although I think Angel Densentsu is hilarious <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Murf, I couldn't get into GL at all.

I watched the first few EPs (up to the ep with 16 fuzzy beastmen) and just didn't find it amusing past the first ep and a half. Does it eventualy get past the "we are mocking mecha/buddybuddy anime"?
