<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Why do people read books when they can watch movies?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Because what they're doing with the Half-Life engine is equal to someone making a six thousand paged flip book instead of watching a movie. That analogy is horrible, and so are all the others. Battlefield 1942 is played instead of Battlefield 2 because people like the gameplay better. The same goes for 1.04 NS instead of the latest version. This argument isn't about the 'latest version gameplay' so much as it is 'Wow, what a waste of time.' Their time <b>would</b> be better spent on the source engine. Instead of high poly textures and models, they could just make <i>low poly</i> alternatives. Instead of making their own sub par (but still impressive) dynamic lighting, they could use the one that's coming out soon, which I'll bet comes out before the release of their mod.
There is no reason to use the HL engine over the Source engine.

It's no problem, it's just very code intensive. Odds are they are already sneaking behind the engine's back and accessing openGL directly to render the shadows.

What is the utillity in using harddrives as speakers, or oscilloscopes? The utility is the fun the developer percieves when they code their mod, not that people play it.

Not really.
It's called "World's Largest" (at largest collectibles, mind you) because hardly anyone uses something of that size. It's better to use motion picture than a flip book if you're looking for making something along the lines of a movie.

To make the movie equivalent(Most expensive movie I guess) you need hundreds of millions of dollars, making the worlds largest flip book is almost unclaimed territory and therefor attractive to certain kinds of people. The utillity is solely in the making and uniqueness, not in the end result.

But we have to consider that it would be almost free to make their movie, considering source modding doesn't cost much (if anything?) if you're not buying the engine.

Sometimes the intended audience is the coder.
