It's alot of fun, there is pretty constant combat once you know what you are doing, since turtling and spending to much time building defences instead of teching up pretty much guarantees a loss. This is mostly because there are units big enough to tear your defence apart in seconds, and they are relatively easy to get (1 tech III mobile artillery guy can erase a line of defence if your opponent is still in tech II. Like wise for tech II mobile missile launchers vs Tech I defence).
This game is all about multitasking. You have to been constantly expanding your economy (which is easy since you can cue up 20 buildings in 1 click) and continually climbing up the tech-tree since higher tech units are exponentially better then their lower tech counterparts (tech III siege assault bot will walk right through tons of tech II or I units). Then if you have the upper hand, or it has come to a stand-still you can spend money building the experimentals or other incredibly devastating units (tech III bombers, Tech III artillery, Tech III missile launchers aka NUKE).
The game is a tactician's wet dream. The point defences are lethally effective against rolling thunder (the name given to the C&C offensive, or just building a crapload of tanks, and rolling over something), AA-guns decimate anything moving slower than an interceptor flying at full speed.
If you could even get close to my style of base defences, with no less than 200 tanks, then you'd deserve to beat me...
I have the game, got it on release day here in Denmark, sadly, I can't play over GPGnet due to it requiring .net 2.0, which I can't install due to my windows installer being borked, and it seems the only solution is to reformat, which atm I cba to do.
That said, I can still play over Hamachi, so... yeah.

You should love SupCom then Rover. Like TA before it, turtling is extremely viable; like in reality(?) you have to take the defenses out from afar if you don't want your troops to be reduced to vapor.
Not to get into an E-peen waving contest, but you must have played against people who suck. Laser gens turrets are terrible against late game units (emperor overlords and large masses of smaller tanks) do to their lower damage vs regular patriots. They are nice early on since they kill infantry by droves, but they just don't cut it late game) And once you turtle in, what are you going to use to win? Auras? Come on. The money is better spent on mobile units.
Besides, if you were turtling as laser general you are playing him terribly wrong. Laser gen is INCREDIBLE early game. Get 2 laser tanks, 1 avenger and a humvee and you can role over anything else of equal cost early game. The 20% armor upgrade and then using marksmanship strat gives you a huge advantage since laser crusaders are ungodly good when it comes to burst damage (which is why you need the range upgrade, lets you eliminate lines of enemy forces before they even get within range of you).
I was prior to GLA demo(I never built demo bikes though, they were too lame) and USA laser

I used to put more lazer turrets than the average player had tanks. Lazer turrets take out things like the rockets from mobile scuds and the likes as well, which is a nice bonus as well. A few auroras can take out stuff like mobile nuke cannons and just building several lines of them makes sure super weapons don't take out too many at a time (if they weren't taken care of using auroras, SW's are kind of a problem when turtling so they're high on the list of things to take down, as are the structures that they require [strat center etc]. MOAB's etc aren't a problem if you just put an insane amount of lazer turrets. And how did I usually attack? After much turtling, cash racks up and the base expands. Build fields and send auroras to power reactors for USA/china and to...the rocket things...outposts, whatever for the GLA. Then rush in using either lazer crusaders, hummvees filled with four rocketeers and one pathfinder and avengers. Also: have auroras support them (I usually had most of my 0-9 hotkeys bound to auroras for micromanagement).
Not to mention how easy single player is in generals when turtling.

Laser turrets do fire on engagable missiles (such as scuds and tomahawks) but all anti-air guns can do that. However nuke cannons/inferno cannons/rocket buggies can't be blocked with them. If you are going to turtle like that, Super Weapon General is by far the best. EMP patriots and her completely over-powered aura bombers are incredible. However, the whole reason Im saying this is turtling very rarely wins in C&C. This is mostly because nobody is ever going to let you just sit in your base building a wall of laser turrets. For example, I open up by rushing in 1 tactical full of 4 terrorists and 1 builder to wipe out the persons supply depot. I don't have enough fingers to count how many half-constructed defensive structures I've zipped past on my way to the soft parts of their base. If by some stroke of luck you are able to get it done, it takes nothing more then 1 generals ability to put a hole in it big enough for a column of tanks to roll through (carpet bomb, moab, or if you are GLA using combo infantry ambush + pop-up tunnel network).
Anyway, I stopped playing C&C generals because of how lame the player base was. People disconnecting when they start to lose, people refusing to play against you do to your "Stat-hacked record" (I was like 12-3 on a new account and the guy figured that meant I was a stat-padder) or just general ######.
Talking about this makes me want to play again, anybody up for a game? I've got like 25 different accounts but we can work something out.

isn't pretty much every RTS game rock-paper-scissors-y? That's why I'm so bad at them I think. It's funny, I'm such a multitasker IRL, but I can never even come close to managing an offense and a defense and an economy and tech trees and god knows what else at the same time in an RTS

Psh. gunna cop out that easy?
Turtling has never been a good strat in any RTS game I've played, it's slightly required in Supcomm, just because almost all matches will last 30+ minutes, defensive structures are so easy to build and it's usually a requirement to keep a few anti-air and point defences somewhere in your base in the case of a drop-ship rush.
I was told that SC is less rock-paper-scissors, and more rock-bigger rock, but since there are AA defenses, land defenses, sand defenses or what not, that was probably not entirely true.
Just for the record, Xyth kicked my butt on 1v1, even though my economy was better then his measily economy. Damn mantis bots <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
I just had the craziest game, you can grab the replay from me if you want. It was a water-island map so my ally who was Aeon was at an advantage (tech I amphib guys). Anyway I got cornered in, but manage to sneak units into secluded areas and build up a large base, using my main one as a decoy. Just check it out, he wasn't expecting it.
Mantis would be balanced if they were SLOWER. I think I started to out pace you when I could put more units on the board that were faster then your t1 tanks. That and the artillery that I got up mid game is what clinched me the win. I just can't tech to tier2 as fast as you can, I think its a big disadvantage I have to figure out.

Didn't know there was a replay feature - Does it have fast forward and such as well? If so host it somewhere, i'd love to take a look at how other people play
